Western North Carolina Quilters Guild Workshop until 3 pm

March 2014 , Volume 33 , Number 3
Western North Carolina Quilters Guild
10 am Meeting, Thursday, March 20th
Workshop until 3 pm
at Grace Lutheran Church
Amanda Murphy Featured Guest
Blossoms
Our first half-day workshop, Blossoms Table Runner (or quilt), will begin after our March business meeting and program
by guest lecturer, Amanda Murphy. Amanda is an extremely talented quilt and fabric designer and author from Charlotte. Her
second book, Color Essentials, has just been published. To see more about Amanda visit her website at:
www.amandamurphydesign.com/
There are a few openings for the workshop and Bridget will invite non-members by March 1! Please contact Bridget to get
registered! The sign-up sheet is included in this issue of Grainlines; the cost is $20 and pictures of the Blossoms pattern are also
on our new Facebook page! Please bring your own lunch and enjoy the day.
Sign-up will begin at the March meeting for the May workshop with Sandi Blackwell (www.stitchedbuy.com). Sandi
teaches a new technique Square-agonals and the workshop will focus on the design, Colors of Spring. This will be a full-day
workshop on Friday, May 16 at Etowah United Methodist Church. Sandi is thrilled to share with us that she is now a Craftsy
educator and that her first set of classes will be released this spring! We are fortunate to have her with us!
For those who weren’t able to attend our February 20 meeting, you missed a lot of fun and terrific ideas to make small
items for our Quilt Show Boutique. A new set of pictures are up on our Facebook page (see article on page 2). We called upon
members from both our own Guild and the local quilting community to showcase some small projects we can try at home. It was
interesting to note that both Carole Couse’s design for small thread catchers and Dawn Kucera’s Christmas ornaments called for a
9-inch equilateral triangle template. Just think – from one template we can make two entirely different items. Bonnie
Cunningham included the site for the free pattern for her Christmas wreath, (www.quiltermag.com), which offers freebies in the
project drop-down menu). Carol Preston provided this link to her presentation idea for the hot bowl holders: (“Very complete…,”
http://chrisquilts.net/blog/. This is a link for Chris Kirsch, a past guest lecturer for us last October. Each week Chris has
something interesting and new on the site which you can join. Scroll down to Christmas projects/gifts for Dec. 8th to find her
potholder tutorial. Other sites for inspiration to make items for ht Quilter’ Shoppe: www.Isewfree.com offers free quilt patterns
and embroidery designs daily and www.craftsy.com offers many quilt patterns, many for free and many easy to make patterns.
We are also thrilled to announce that 16 completed quilts were returned from our first Charity Day of Sewing. The quilts
are beautiful, and will bring much love, warmth and happiness to members of our community.
Bridget and Charleen
Quilters' Shoppe
During our guild quilt show,
members have the opportunity to sell new, hand made
items in the Quilters’ Shoppe. Quilts will be displayed on
the stage, with advanced notice from the seller.
Shoppe participants need to sign up and work at
least one shift at the Shoppe.

Facebook for WNC Quilters!
Our Facebook page is up. You may link to our FB page by clicking the tab on our website, (the easiest
way!) or by going to Facebook, signing in, and then searching for “wnc quilters.”
We are planning to highlight programs and special events, to showcase our members’ “Show & Tells”,
and to include pictures from our many events including each month’s program.
A special thank you to Deanna Horsewood for being the first member to post to our page with links to
the Sochi Olympic quilts (which member Patty Votruba shared were from designs by one of her
quilting friends in California!). Remember all members may post to our Facebook site and share links and/
or projects! We also hope our Area reps will post information and pictures as to what is
happening in each Area so our Guild can know more about what happens outside of our monthly Guild
meetings!
We are pleased to announce that Flat Rock Playhouse will be the first local business to display a quilt
block on their building to showcase Henderson County’s joining the Quilt Trail! Georgia Bonesteel showed
us the quilt block she made from Flat Rock’s Quilt Trail design of Comedy and Tragedy, and it is now on
our Facebook page. We look forward to Flat Rock Playhouse’s invitation for Guild members to celebrate
everyone’s work at the unveiling ceremony! Thank Georgia for spearheading this project!

We are looking forward to viewing all the wonderful creations that everyone has made in
order to help make this year’s challenge a great success. Thanks to all our participants!

The purpose of this
project is to recognize
small restaurants owned by
chefs who work on site and
to promote quilting as an
art form. Cynthia Gaughan made the jacket from all
her scraps. She claims it wasn’t anything special,
but it turned out quite stunning! The coat will be
displayed in local restaurants one month at a time
but will not be for sale.
The quilted jacket is currently on display at
Dean's Deli on Greenville Highway in Flat Rock,
from February 15, through March 15. Future dates
will be announced as they are scheduled.
