Artist Karl Leitzel will give a brief overview, with examples, of
artists through history depicting musicians. Examples can be found
in classical realism through impressionism and into the present day.
Karl, who often paints musicians performing their music, will then
create a painting of a local musician while the class watches.
Instructor: Karl Leitzel is a full-time professional artist and partner/
resident artist at the Green Drake Gallery. He is the founder of
Landscape Artists International.
Location: Green Drake Gallery, 101-B W. Main Street, Millheim
Tuition: $10.00
Learn to dance basic figures in the rhythms of Waltz, Foxtrot,
Rumba, Cha Cha, Tango and Swing. No previous ballroom dance
experience is necessary. Partners are necessary, but pairing with
someone of the same sex is acceptable.
Instructors: Carter and Ruby Ackerman have been teaching
social ballroom dancing for 25 years for Centre Region Parks and
Recreation.

In the womb, the first thing we hear is our mother’s heartbeat as
we are cradled in the flow of her daily movements. We are formed
in rhythm which is an inherent part of who we are. Come explore
the universe of percussion instruments from around the world.
Together we will create a symphony of sound that will uplift,
inspire and encourage your inner child to play! No experience is
necessary, just bring your sense of adventure.
Instructor: Carol Lindsay has a B.A. in music and has been a
percussionist since 1968. She currently plays in the Nittany Valley
Symphony, the Celtic band, Callanish and the world music duo,
From the Heart. In collaboration with her friend, Jessie Barth, she
plays in sing-a-longs titled, “A Rodgers & Hammerstein Sing”
celebrating America’s greatest songbook.

Maestro Jinbo will present an introduction to the Nittany Valley
Symphony, including a preview of its 2013-2014 season and
general information about symphony orchestras. Content is suited
to current symphony attendees as well as potential new audience
members. No advance preparation necessary, but bring any
questions you may have.
Instructor: Michael Jinbo is in his 24th season as Music Director
and Conductor of the Nittany Valley Symphony.

0105SC So You Always Wanted to Strum a Ukulele?

In a course just for fun, Stu will give a brief history of the ukulele
and the crazes over it in the ‘50s and currently. He will introduce
types, parts, tuning, holding and fingering and provide ukes to have
the class immediately strumming simple chords to simple tunes.
Also included is listening to past and present popular players like
Ukulele Ike and Arthur Godfrey.
Instructor: Stu Dance, who got his first ukulele in 1948 and
has been playing it ever since, probably has one of the largest
collections of uke music available today. He collects and plays
many types of ukes.

Christmas ornaments came to popularity in the U.S. Then
he will explain how he got started in glassblowing and how his
career evolved into making Christmas ornaments. He will include
examples of his work and tools.

glassblower, now makes Christmas ornaments full time using the
same tools and skills.

Using the elements of nature - earth, water, fire and air - as a
foundation, participants explore their past, present and future
through the use of theatre. A monologue is written to look at the
past. A dialogue of “conflict” is acted to investigate options for new
behaviors and a scene from the future puts you on center stage as
“star” of your life.
Instructor: Elle Morgan has a B.A. in theatre and a Master’s in
mass communications. Her experiences range from a counselor of
adjudicated youth at a wilderness center to a teacher of arts and
careers at an inner city learning center. She is currently a health
writer for Mount Nittany Health.

all kinds of things, from prints to baskets to stamps and more.
Participants are encouraged to bring to class a few examples of their
own collections to share.
Instructor: Nancy Toepfer, an avid collector of vintage Native
American pottery, has always enjoyed and been inspired by the
collections of others. She is a former Head Docent at the Palmer
Museum of Art.

Quilling is an ancient art form using thin paper strips to create
decorative designs. Participants will start by making a snowflake
or two to hang as holiday decorations, but can move on to other
possibilities, such as animals, flowers, birds, place cards, favors, etc.

Instructor: Doris Carter first learned quilling as a hobby in
Florida in 1999 and has taught it twice before as an OLLI course.

Special Notes: Each registrant should bring Elmer’s glue, a 6”

meet knitters of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced. Be

Do you remember when women were too “fragile” to run the
whole length of a basketball court? Come explore the history of
women’s basketball and the many rule changes that have occurred
over the years. We will play a few games by the various rules to get
a true feeling for how the women’s game has evolved. You can sign
up to play or to listen, observe and cheer on your OLLI friends.

see a Lady Lions practice session.

emergency appendectomy in China, described how acupuncture
relieved his post-operative pain. Since then, acupuncture has
flourished in the the West, and American patients spend $500
million a year on it. What is acupuncture?

focus eight years ago. Having read many books and filling three

will learn how to start, count, and finish a project. Those with

Looking for a new hobby? Mah Jongg is an ancient game that
originated in the Far East. Similar to Rummy, Mah Jongg is a game
of skill, strategy and calculation and involves a certain degree of
chance. This class is for beginners, but more experienced players
are welcome.

been playing Mah Jongg for four years and has taught several new
players in the Philipsburg area.

native. He has a general interest in Bellefonte history, particularly
of the governors.

conditions affecting most as they enter their Golden years. We will
discuss common problems and treatments. Emphasis will be on
audience questions and interaction.
Instructor: Dr. Jay Fiore is an Ophthalmologist at Heimer Eye
Care Associates specializing in cataract and corneal surgery.

Southerners feared Union efforts to give freedmen full voice in
reshaping the South. Northerners feared that freedmen would
get no rights at all. The meaning and propriety of Reconstruction
Amendments to the Constitution were bitterly debated and rarely
enforced. Southern anger over devastating human losses and
economic and political disorder long endured. Reconstruction
yielded more animosity than the war did.
Instructor: Jim Dungan has taught numerous Civil War courses
for OLLI. He majored in history at the undergraduate and master’s
levels. Jim has read several hundred Civil War books and has visited
most of the Civil War battlefields east of the Mississippi River.

This course will cover the organization and management of light
artillery batteries. Equipment and ordnances will be discussed. An
artifacts display and demonstration will focus on Civil War shells
and fuses. Enjoy a PowerPoint presentation on artillery reenacting.
Instructor: Gary Hoover, the Commander of Thompson’s
Independent Battery C reenactment unit, has been an artillery
reenactor and living historian for twenty years.

For Christians, Jews, and Muslims between the years 500 and
1500, the Mediterranean (Middle of the Earth) Sea was the main
means for moving people and goods between East and West. Two
experienced history professors will combine lectures and discussion
in presenting the role of the Middle Sea in the Middle Ages,
possibly offering lessons useful to understanding today’s world.
Instructors: Dale Landon taught ancient and medieval history
at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Art Goldschmidt taught
Middle East and world history at Penn State.

Dr. Nelson was a team physician for the American Friends Service
Committee project in Quang Ngai, Vietnam, 1967-69. She was
captured by NLF forces during Tet, 1968, and held for two months.
She has made several trips back, including four to volunteer as a
teacher-aide for English in Quang Ngai, 2008-2011.

This hike will feature a three hour walk exploring the confines
of a ghost town named Peale. Located near Grassflat from 1883
to 1912, Peale had a population of approximately 2,500 people
and contained over 300 buildings. Every building was owned
by the Clearfield Bituminous Coal Company and every job was
company paid.
Instructor: Dave Caslow is a retired secondary social studies
teacher with 39 years experience at Philipsburg-Osceola, Warrior
Run and Tyrone High Schools.

also a short movie: Discover Seiffen, Germany’s Christmas Village.

will teach the process of creating sourdough, provide some history
of the baking craft, and tempt you with some samples of his wares.
Instructor: Tony Sapia is the owner of Gemelli Bakers in downtown
State College. In October 2008, Tony won the California Raisin
Market Board competition for the best raisin bread in America. A
graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY,
Tony spent 1.5 years in Italy perfecting his art.

research on grape vine trunk diseases, worked with wine growers in

Sometimes identified as the last refuge of alien invaders, Atlantis has

technologies, pyramid construction, and the Bermuda Triangle.
Instructor: Bob Schmalz is a retired professor of geology at
PSU. Research interests include the chemistry of seawater, coral

Recreational bicyclers will be biking the Pine Creek Rails-to-Trails
between Jersey Shore and Wellsboro. The trail will be divided into
4 segments, ranging in distance from 21 to 35 miles. Rides will
be between 2.5 and 3.5 hours. The trail is flat and vehicle free.
Participants must wear helmets and be reasonably physically fit.
Your bicycle should be in good mechanical condition.
Instructor: Kent Addis enjoys biking, skiing and kayaking. He was
formerly on the staff of Continuing Ed at Penn State, Executive
Director of the Bellefonte YMCA and past president of OLLI.
Location: Pine Creek Rails-to-Trails. For the first ride, meet at
8:30 AM at the intersection of US Route 99/220 and Jacksonville
Rd., Bellefonte – (the first left turn beyond the Bellefonte Route

their cars. They will ride their bikes approximately 25 miles to Jim
Thorpe along the D & L Rails-to-Trails which follows the Lehigh
River for an overnight stay at The Inn at Jim Thorpe. They will
return the next day over the same trail to their cars and drive back to
State College. Meals and lodging along the way are at your expense.
Instructor: Lynn Carpenter has led OLLI bike trips to Greater
Allegheny Passage around Ohiopyle for the last 2 years in addition
to various other similar bike trips. He has done the D & L Trail
through Lehigh Gorge before and enjoys scenic bike trips.
