THE{FULL}LIFE
TOUCHMARK AT MT. BACHELOR VILLAGE
A display of talents
The Touchmark Quilt Show decorated the halls of
Touchmark with stunning creations of all shapes and
sizes from talented residents.
One resident featured prominently in the Quilt Show
each year is Joanne Myers. With over 40 years of
quilting experience, Joanne’s impressive work has been
recognized in many ways, and she continues to use
her hobby to help others. Each year, Joanne and her
quilting guild make more than 500 quilts to donate to
those in need.
Her work has also been immortalized in print,
appearing in a book called Landscapes & Illusions:
Creating Scenery with Fabric. This July, Joanne will
be honored at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show and
was asked to make a quilt to celebrate the show’s 40th
anniversary.
Joanne’s oak leaf reel quilt is one she is

Thoughtfulness … It’s good for
your health
Settling in for spring
Dianna Lawrence
Vice President, Wellness
Aristotle once surmised that the essence of life is
“to serve others and do good.” If recent research
is any indication, serving others might also be
the essence of good health.
With warmer weather just around the corner,
now may be the perfect time for a change of
scenery. Touchmark features beautiful grounds
that help promote a {FULL} life inside and out!
The National Institutes of Health found that
giving to charities activates regions of the brain
associated with pleasure, social connection, and
trust. Altruistic behavior releases endorphins in
the brain, producing a very positive feeling.
Individuals who helped others or gave emotional
support had a lower risk of death over a five-year
period than those who didn’t.
Researchers suggest one reason that
thoughtfulness may improve health and
longevity is that it helps decrease stress, which is
associated with a variety of health problems.

Thoughtfulness is contagious. We spur a ripple
effect of generosity, which promotes a sense of
trust and cooperation that strengthens our ties
to others. Positive social interactions are key to
good mental and physical health.

Thoughtfulness also has been linked to the
release of oxytocin, a hormone that induces
feelings of warmth, euphoria, and connection
with others, with the effects lasting up to two
hours.
Contributing 100 to 200 hours to volunteering
each year correlates to lower blood pressure.
Mentally stimulating activities, like tutoring or
reading aloud to others, is helpful in maintaining
memory and thinking skills. Supporting physical
activity promotes cardiovascular health.
Opportunities for volunteerism abound at
Touchmark. Contact a member of the Life
Enrichment/Wellness team to find out how you
can help others—and yourself!

CAPTURING DELIGHT{FULL} MOMENTS
Residents enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour and
tasting at Deschutes Brewery, where they sampled a
variety of beers.
Touchmark team members and residents worked
together to solve the Death by Chocolate murder
mystery. We figured out whodunit and also enjoyed
some sweet treats along the way!
Moves offer new opportunities
Doris Grossman has moved many times; each move
brought new possibilities. Born in Czechoslovakia,
Doris doesn’t recall much about that country,
because when she was four years old, her father
received a sponsorship from the bank where he
worked, and the family was transferred to the
Panama Canal Zone.
“Basically, we escaped the war,” says Doris. “When
we arrived in Panama, we were united with other
families creating a new life.” While her mom and
dad were assigned to work on a farm and care for an
elderly woman, Doris lived with a family in the city,
“so I could go to an American school.” She quickly
learned to speak Spanish and English at school but
still spoke German when she was with her parents.
After her father died, Doris, then 13, and her mother
moved to San Francisco. Her mom, who had worked
in retail, was hired at Macy’s. “While going to school,
I worked there part time,” says Doris. “I liked retail,
and studied merchandising and business at City
College. After graduation, I was asked to join Macy’s
Executive Program.” Thus began a nearly 20-year
career with one of the nation’s largest department
stores. “I eventually became an assistant buyer,”
Doris shares.
More travels
Doris met her husband Alvin “Al” Grossman on a
blind date. “We went out to dinner, and it was love
at first sight,”
smiles Doris.
Within a
year, the
couple had
made plans
to marry.
“Al loved
purebred
dogs. He also
was a gifted
writer, and wrote several dog books,” says Doris.
These two passions steered them on 40 years of
discoveries.
“We traveled to over 26 countries, where Al judged
dog shows. We had lots of journeys and trips and
made a lot of friends, because we stayed with
people,” Doris says.
After Al passed away, Doris moved to Bend
last year to be near one of her two sons. “I’m
getting involved,” she says. For example, she
has volunteered in Touchmark’s memory care
neighborhoods. “I enjoy crafts and have worked with
residents on craft projects. It’s amazing what they
do there!” She also plans to start taking the fitness
classes.
“Living at Touchmark is another new journey for
me,” says Doris.
