MESSAGE FROM RABBI MITRANI-KNAPP
Kashrut: Eating the Jewish Way
Myth #2: Keeping Kosher is an all or
nothing proposition… Not necessarily!
As we embark upon the new secular year
and consider our resolutions once again I
know for many of us, losing weight is often
among the top ten. As I write this we have
just finished Thanksgiving, the unofficial
beginning of the eating fest that begins
with turkey and leads right into latkes and
sufganiyot (jelly donuts fried in oil for
Hanukkah)
Some people make wholesale dramatic
changes in their lives, but for most people, change takes place with small steps.
Most people who have integrated
kashrut and other aspects of Jewish observance in to their lives do so with a first
step.
Food is a big part of our lives… we spend
a large percentage of our lives talking
about it, shopping for it, cooking it and
eating it. (though in our house, this takes
much less time relative to the other activities!)
The connection between food and Judaism
is strong and deep and I don’t just mean
all the symbolic foods we have on our
holidays. Unlike other religions that isolate
practice from life, for example, going to a
monastery or ashram, Judaism is designed
to be integrated into our day to day
lives… and what is more integral to our
day to day lives then food!
Kashrut is one of the most misunderstood
aspects of Jewish practice as the following
will underscore:
Myth #1: “Keeping Kosher” was established because of health considerations of
the ancient near east and are no longer
relevant. WRONG!
The foundation for “keeping kosher” is
commanded in the Torah through separation of milk and meat: “do not boil a kid in
its mother’s milk- lo tivashel g’di bahalev
emo” and the distinctive categories of
animals which are and are not permitted.
Animals of prey and scavengers are
among the prohibited animals. The laws of
kashrut are commandments and we are
obligated to follow them even if we don’t
fully understand them. One of the objectives of kashrut is to achieve a sense of
holiness. For me, and perhaps for others, I
relate to the idea that by “keeping kosher” I am not ingesting animals who do
not have a holy way about them i.e. birds
of prey or bottom feeders who scavenge
along the ocean’s bottom.
Fact #1: Keeping Kosher is about holiness
and Jewish identity.
The rabbis of the Talmud and law codes
expanded upon the Biblical laws of
Kashrut ( i.e. what is fit and unfit to eat)
largely motivated by the desire to have
Jews maintain their Jewish identity and
achieve a sense of holiness. In the ancient
world meat was not eaten often, and reserved mainly for Jewish holidays. It was
on these Jewish holidays that the rabbis
wanted to insure that Jews were eating
with other Jews and eating foods according to the laws and observances of one’s
people. It was a way to reinforce identity.
4
If for example you are eating taref in
your house (such as pig, shellfish or other
non-permitted food) the first step towards observing kashrut is to no longer
bring these things into the house. If you
are already doing this, then you might
want to insure you will not serve milk and
meat such as cheeseburgers (unless you
use tofu cheese!), chicken parmigiana or
butter in your potatoes or rice when serving it with meat or chicken; another step
would be to only bring kosher meat into
your house, and finally, if one has done
all these previous things, then it would be
time to buy two sets of dishes and silverware for milk and meat.
There is a woman in our congregation
who does not currently keep kosher but
after studying about kashrut, decided to
buy a kosher chicken to make chicken
soup. She said the soup tasted good and
more importantly, she was preparing and
eating food according to a 2,000 year
old tradition. She has taken the first step
towards observance of the laws of
kashrut and a first step towards living a
more holy life, according to a Jewish
understanding.
•
•
•
•
Torah teaches that
the life blood of
an animal belongs
to God, not us,
thus the reason for
the blood to be
drained out before we eat.
The term “taref”
refers to an animal that is “torn” i.e. killed as in
“roadkill” and has come to refer to anything unkosher, unfit.
Milk, yogurt, bread, packaged/cans
goods etc that have an “ou” label or
variations of the “k” indicate that the
food has been made in accordance with
Jewish dietary laws. For example, it
insures a dairy product is not made in
the same plant with meat, that the block
of salt used to season products such as
canned vegetables is not held together
with an unkosher gelatin.
In general according to Conservative
Jewish practice fresh fruits and vegetables do not need a kosher label.
Certain foods are neither milk nor meat
and are called “pareve.” For example,
fruits, vegetables, eggs etc can be
eaten with either milk or meat products.
“Keeping Kosher” is about Jewish identity
and it’s also about consciousness. When
we observe the laws of kashrut, we are
remembering our connection to our long
history as a people, the holiness of the
laws of the Torah and the importance of
adding a sense of holiness to our eating.
• Keep milk and meat separate including
milk products such as butter or cream;
instead substitute margarine, tofu
cheese.
• Only bring kosher meat into the house.
Shoprite on Main Street carries kosher
meat as does Ben’s and Wesley Kosher among others. If this seems too big
a step, then buy kosher meat on Shabbat and Jewish holidays as a beginning.
• Do not eat shell fish: this includes
shrimp, lobster, scallops, crabs, mussels,
nor any products from a pig specifically pork or bacon.
A number of years ago before I became
observant I had been discussing with my
husband Fred the idea of keeping kosher
as my family had “kept Kosher growing
up and I wanted to keep the tradition.
(before rabbinical school I didn’t know
the difference between tradition and the
obligation of the commandments). At
about the same time I attended a large
family reunion at a hotel and as I sat
down to lunch with a distant cousin, our
talk turned to what to order. She said the
shrimp looked good and I agreed but said
that I didn’t eat shrimp and she didn’t
know why? I was so taken aback. A Jewish girl who had no idea about the laws of
kashrut. It was at that time I told my husband that if we didn’t maintain the laws
and traditions of our people specifically
kashrut, that
our grandchildren also
wouldn’t have any idea about kashrut. It
was at that point that he conceded and
pointed to the cabinet where we could
keep the meat dishes….
What makes something kosher?
• Kosher means “fit.” In order for meat
to be kosher it must fulfill two requirements: It must be meat only from the
permitted animals; It must be slaughtered, soaked, salted according to
Jewish law.
• The reason meat is soaked and salted
is to drain the blood from it. For the
Kashrut is one of the “ways of our people,” a connection to our identity. If you
are not currently keeping kosher how will
your grandchildren or great grandchildren
even know what it means…. Take a baby
step and let me know how it goes… Soon
you too may be making chicken soup with
an Empire chicken….Hearty holy appetite….
Fact #2: “Keeping Kosher” is not as hard
as you think.
For those who don’t keep kosher, and
would like to begin to take a baby step,
consider the following:
MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT HARRY BAKER
As we move in 2010 I hope everyone
had a great and safe new year. The
New Year will bring new and exciting
programs to the synagogue. But first
I must commend Fran Satran, Doreen
Adesnik, and Maryann Shain and
their entire committee for the cabaret night. The crowd was enthusiastic
and the ballroom was set up as a NY
night club. There was plenty of food
and refreshments for everyone. The
entertainment was terrific headlined
by our own Cantor Rifkin. No one can
stir a crowd better. The comedians
were also great. The money raised
from this night will be used for future
programming in the synagogue. I
want to thank everyone that came to
the event.
On Sunday, January 16, 2010 at 5PM,
the Men’s Club will honor Andy Alper
and John Chargar at the past presidents dinner. These two individuals
have given their time and energy to
the synagogue. I ask that you come
and support this event. The Men’s
Club caries out many functions and is
always there to help. From the High
Holiday setup and take down, setting
up the Succah, providing funding for
the 10th grade trip to Israel, and much
more. Please come and say thank
you. You will have a great time.
In February we will celebrate Purim.
This year will be a bit different because Purim is Saturday night the
27th. There will be a Purim ball and a
play, “Something’s Brewing in
Shushan.” The actors will be members of the synagogue and I have
been cast as Mordachi. I have gone
from building stage sets for 42nd
Street to the big time. I hope you
will come and see myself and your
fellow members make our Broadway
debuts. When you come to the ball,
make sure you wear a costume, you
could win a prize.
On Lag B’Omer which is Sunday,
May 2nd, we will hold our first walk/
bikeathon to benefit our youth. The
event will involve everyone in the
synagogue. There will be 15 or 30
mile bike ride, a walking route
through the local neighborhood, and
an area set aside for our nursery
school children to walk and or ride
on the grounds of the synagogue.
You will be able register as a family,
individual or team. The event will be
followed by a barbecue at the synagogue. Please look for more information starting in February about
this event.
There are many adult education programs going on at the synagogue
weekly. Please go to our website,
www.newcityjc.org for more information about these programs or feel
free to call the office.

YOUTH COMMUNITY
New Year
(of the Trees)
Resolutions
become a bit more understanding and
compassionate.
Over the last few years, environmental education has been on a rise.
The public schools are now taking
field trips to reservoirs, rivers, bogs,
and forests to study the effect of the
environment on our natural resources. In Jewish educational formats too, eco-consciousness has
been at the forefront of what is discussed. The big question is, “How
did something that was cared about
by a few people on the fringe develop into what will likely be the key
issue of the next decade?”
Everyone has their own opinions, but
I believe the answer is simple. We
have opened our eyes and realized
that our actions have repercussions.
We can no longer look at someone
who drives a Hummer without thinking, “How much gas do they burn in
that thing?” and we are constantly
reminded by TV personalities that by
lowering our thermostats in the winter we can save money and fossil
fuels. I believe that it goes beyond
money, however, and that the
American marketplace has shifted to
In Judaism, the idea of “going green”
isn’t new. One of our mitzvot is bal
tashchit, reducing unnecessary waste.
This can be demonstrated in many
ways, from passing down clothes between siblings, to recycling, to reducing the amount of paper used in office
settings. Beyond these simple actions,
new technology has enabled “green
energy” to become something accessible by many families. While solar panels on the roofs of every home in the
neighborhood may still be a few years
away, low flow shower heads, recycling bins, and CFL bulbs have become
a part of many families’ homes.
Tu B’shevat is one of the four “new
year’s” celebrated on the Jewish calendar. With Judaism’s Arbor Day
around the corner, now may be the
perfect time to make a different type
of “new year resolution.”
I encourage each family to find two
environmentally friendly projects to
which they can commit over the
course of the year. One of these projects should be a one-time event such
as changing all the bulbs in your house
from incandescent light bulbs to the
CFL bulbs (Did you know that they
now have dimmable CFLs too???).
The other project
should be an ongoing
project
that everyone in
the house can do
together such as
building a compost bin in the
back yard and rotating the job among
the members of the household. Not
only will you be doing your part to
help save the environment, but in
the springtime, you can use the compost you’ve built up to plant a vegetable garden or fertilize your lawn
(simple compost bin instructions can
be found online, or come ask me, I’ll
help you make one).
With so much out there, oftentimes
we are overwhelmed. Rather than
not doing anything, simply start with
a project or two and see where it
takes your family. If it’s something
you enjoy great, if it’s not something
that works for you, that’s also OK.
Give it a shot and simply do what you
can.
Live the Vision!
Ben

Informal Education at New City

NCJC is invited to participate in the Shabbat service at West Point Jewish Chapel on Friday night, February 5, 2009 at 7:00 PM. The service will be followed by a light dinner/oneg. This service is an alternate to
our usual Friday night service at NCJC.
This has been an annual event for us. We have been honored in the past by the West Point Jewish Choir
having performed at NCJC, and by Chaplain Rabbi Huerta speaking here about his tour of duty in
Iraq. Let’s reciprocate by showing the Jewish cadets our warmth and friendship.
Everyone is invited. The dinner/oneg is being sponsored by NCJC Men’s Club. To help defray the costs we
are asking for $10 per person or $30 maximum per family (parents + children). Please send a check payable to NCJC Men’s Club to David Blatt, 2 Pippen Place, New City, NY 10956. Please RSVP to David at
sdblatt@yahoo.com or 845-634-4402 no later than Monday, February 1.
Everyone except children must bring a form of picture identification in order to enter West Point. You
must provide your own transportation, but if you offer to car pool or need a ride, please let us know.
DIRECTIONS: You should allow 45 minutes travel time. The directions are: Take the Palisades Parkway
north to the end (Bear Mountain traffic circle). Take the 4th exit onto Route 9W North and then follow
the signs for West Point. Once you arrive at West Point make a left at the first stop sign. Follow Mills
Road until the next stop sign and make a right. Follow Stony Lonesome Road around the bend and bear
up the hill to the left. This will be Merritt Road and the Jewish Chapel will be the first building on the left.
You may park in the chapel parking lot.

SISTERHOOD
instructions. You don't know how to
knit? Don't worry, Sheila will show
you how.
December was another wonderful
month for Sisterhood. Our first "Artist
in Residence" workshop took place at
our December Sisterhood meeting.
Our members made Linus blankets
which were donated, in time for Chanukkah, to the elderly in nursing homes
and children in Rockland hospitals.
Everyone had fun snipping, knotting,
and snacking on Chanukkah delights
while participating in this mitzvah. We
thank our own Janice Weissman for
teaching us how to make the blankets.
Our "Chicks with Sticks" have also been
busy knitting hats for Israeli soldiers
which were hand delivered in time for
Chanukkah. If you would like to participate in this ongoing mitzvah project,
please call the NCJC office or email
Sheila Gersh at sogersh@gmail.com for
At our next Sisterhood meeting on Jan
4th at 8:00 pm we will have a program
about Tu B'Shevat, the birthday of the
trees. Larry Frankel, speaker from the
Jewish National Fund, will share with
us news of research going on in Israel
concerning water and forests. We will
learn about desalinization of sea water, transporting water to the negev,
and agricultural advances in the forests. Mr. Frankel travels to all of these
JNF projects yearly and is prepared to
answer all our questions. Please join
us for this very informative talk followed by refreshments.
There will also be a Tu B'Shevat Seder
at the Seudah on Saturday evening
January 30th. We will be honoring
trees by eating Israel fruits, drinking 4
cups of grape juice, and singing some
tree songs. Everyone is invited. Please
come celebrate this wonderful holiday
with us.
Sisterhood's next "Artist in Residence"
program will take place on Monday,
February 1st at 8:00 pm. Karen Londin
will be conducting a candle making
workshop. We will make and decorate
our own healthy soy candle. Space is
limited so make your reservations
soon.
In keeping with Sisterhood's commitment to Gemilut Chesed, acts of loving
kindness, our members are volunteering in support of the NCJC Bikkur
Cholim. Any member who wishes to
drive, shop, call or visit the sick or
homebound, please call Marilyn Drayer
at 638-2308.
We look forward to working with you
now and in the future.
Best wishes for a happy and healthy
New Year 2010, Marilyn and Sheila

New City Jewish Center Sisterhood is looking for “Stars” to add some sparkle to our fund raising efforts.
Our Sisterhood is the “Heart of the Synagogue”. We provide much needed contributions to many facets of
the New City Jewish Center community. Among our accomplishments are Adult Education programs – featuring Rabbi Berkman, Rabbi Mitrani-Knapp, and Cantor Rifkin; Mah Jong classes; knitting instruction; computer
instruction; providing gifts to our Bar and Bat Mitzvah Students; and contributions to our Playground Fund.
Sisterhood donations help provide both the physical and spiritual needs of New City Jewish Center.
In order to continue funding these programs and providing increasing financial support Sisterhood needs
your help. We are creating a fund for extra contributions to Sisterhood. Sisterhood Stars will pledge $36 per
year for the next 3 years. Those women who choose to contribute will have their names listed in Hakol and
will receive a lovely certificate designed by Barbara Schreiber. Please help Sisterhood to continue to be a

Do you or someone you know need help?
The Bikur Cholim is here for you!
What is bikur cholim? Bikur cholim is a Hebrew Term meaning "visiting the sick". Visiting the sick is included in the
category of "Gemilut Chesed", the performance of good
deeds, but is singled out by the Rabbis as something special. It is one of the mitzvoth whose fruit is enjoyed in this
world and principally in the world to come.
What are some kinds of things bikur cholim visitors do?
1. Visit a patient in the hospital or nursing home
2. Visit the homebound
3. Call a homebound senior before Shabbat
4. Drive someone to a doctor's appointment
5. Drive someone to Shabbat services or special
programs at the NCJC
6. Make phone calls
7. Pick up groceries and run errands
If you know anyone in the NCJC community who is ill or
homebound and would benefit from a visit, phone call, or
transportation, or its you, please let us know so that our
bikur cholim visitors can help. Don't be afraid to ask. Confidentiality is respected. We count on you to keep us informed. Please call Marlene at 638.9600.

ARCHIVES
Recently, your Archives co-chairs
were in attendance at Rabbi Berkman’s Lunch and Learn session of
Pirkei Avos, during which the topic
of “stuff” came up — how much
“stuff” we accumulate, things we
collect, and so on. This was very
timely for us because, only a few
days before, we had tried to jam one
more kippah into our kippah drawer
and it became apparent that there
was simply no more room in that
drawer for even one more kippah.
Too much “stuff.”
We emptied the drawer, sorted out
the kippot, returned most of them to
the honoree named inside the kippah, or to the parents of such honorees, and we were left with seven kippot that are the subject of this Archives entry. This is a definite digression from our promise to explore the
years of NCJC’s existence ending in a
zero, but we will get back to that
next time.
The first kippah, in date order, of
these remaining kippot, was of black
suede with silver trim. It topped us
all off at the Past Presidents’ Dinner
Dance on December 4, 1994, in honor
of Arnie Garelick. Next in time order
was a royal blue suede kippah which
covered our heads at the Journal Ball
honoring Michael J. Rosen on March
3, 2001. This was followed by a black
suede kippah, inscribed in bright
green with the words “Cantor Rifkin’s
25th Anniversary Celebration, December 6, 2003.
The Men’s Club hosted a Past Presidents’ event on February 24, 2004,
but the specific honorees were not
noted on the kippah inscription, which
was bright green on gray suede.
Later in 2004, October 30 to be specific, gold print on a black suede kippah heralded the Journal Ball honoring Don Arnstein.
Men’s Club honored their Past Presidents Harry Baker and Sam Rabenstein at an event on March 11, 2006.
The Journal Ball that year, December
16, 2006, honored Larry Kigler, Past
Congregation President. Both the

2006 kippot were fashioned in unadorned black suede.
Your Archives chairs have not missed
a synagogue event almost ever so,
obviously, the kippot for other events
were fashioned from fabrics other
than suede. Mostly satin, we guess,
but we don’t have them to prove it,
so it’s only a guess. Crocheted kippot
have been popular also. And if we
would take a color poll of the suede
kippot, black won out over other colors, 5 - 2.
And, in finishing, let us say “Hats Off’
to every honoree, all of whom
worked then, and many who are still
working, for the good of our New
