The Malahat’s been a mess lately with road construction which just adds to the Friday night traffic jam as people try to get home, so we had to nix the Goldstream Heights ride that was originally planned. Our Chapter Director Tom Woodrow was a member at large during the month. He met with AB-A Chapter for a ride. They left at 9AM and returned at 6:30PM covering 500 KM. His son in-law has returned home now so Tom is back. He thanks everyone for their kind thoughts and hopes for a speedy recovery. UP-COMING EVENTS 2 – 4 August Region-J Rally, held in West Lock, AB John and Sue Sawyer led us on a fantastic Friday Night Ride 12 Jul through the Cowichan area. Sunday 14 July four GWRRA bikes attended the Sooke Lions Poker Run, with all proceeds going to Camp Shawnigan for children with disabilities. The Lions did a great job with a good ride, good prizes and great steak. Hopefully next year we can increase our numbers supporting this worthy cause. 25 August Langford Fire Dept. Charity Ride 14 September Annual Bug Run & BBQ 29 September Breast Cancer Ride Our guests at the 19 July Friday Night Ride were treated to the best Victoria has to offer with the Dallas Road Ride that started out with the Esquimalt Lagoon, through Esquimalt into the downtown core. From there we leisurely rode Dallas Road up through the Uplands and connected from Cadboro Bay to Cordova Bay. From there it was through the Peninsula Farmlands before coming to a stop at Mike and Tiffany’s for outstanding munchies, bevvies and company. Gold Wing Road Riders Association – Region J BC-V – Victoria, BC - August 2013 Edition - Page 3 Saturday 20 Jul our two guests (Harold Arthurs and Doug Hildebrand) gave six of us an amazing Advanced Rider’s Course. We spent the day between the classroom and the range trying and improving skills that we would never get a chance to develop otherwise. Everybody learned something and oh what fun it was to rocket the Goldwing across the range just to come to a screeching halt at the drop of a dime. I think we should all get our brakes checked to make sure we still have any left! Again, Mike and Tiffany really stepped up to the plate running coffee, doughnuts and water around and assisting the instructors setting up, adjusting and tearing down the range. Those two really have the community spirit and it is simply marvelous. Unfortunately Jennifer and I missed both the 26 July Friday Night Ride and the 27 July Salt Spring Ride due to a wonderful visit from her mother. Sue Smith informed me that the Salt Spring ride went well. Eight bikes in total gathered at Schwartz Bay to catch the 8:30 ferry over to the island, including our newest member, Don Shandley from Nanaimo. From what I understand, Kerry & Leanne Zado were even permitted to put a Harley into the mix. Apparently the market was as enjoyable as usual and was followed by a marvelous ride around the Island led by Mike and Tiffany. After crossing the Vesuvius Ferry, the riders enjoyed lunch at the Brass Bell Pub in Crofton before heading back to Victoria. Many thanks to Tiffany and Marilyn for heading up this event in such fine fashion, which is good, because they have already volunteered to do it again next year! Gold Wing Road Riders Association – Region J BC-V – Victoria, BC - August 2013 Edition - Page 5 CHAPTER EDUCATOR’S CORNER When Debris or Hazards Appear in Your Path There are many times that hazards such as potholes, branches or items in the road might appear seemingly out of nowhere. It is very important that you practice avoiding hazards, and are able to react quickly and calmly when they do appear. Often, you will need to make a quick turn to avoid the object or hazard. To do this, you should lean quickly in the direction you want to turn and press on the inside of the hand grip on the same side. This will cause the front wheel to move slightly in the opposite direction while still allowing the bike to move straight ahead to avoid the object without losing balance or throwing the bike too far off course. If you have to ride over an object, it is important that you: • Hold onto the hand grips tightly. • Keep a straight course. • Rise up slightly on the foot pegs to absorb the shock. Once you have driven over an object or hazard in the road, it’s a good idea to pull over and inspect your bike and tires for any damage. The same advice holds true when dealing with uneven surfaces like potholes, broken pavement or railroad tracks. • Slow down • Hold onto the hand grips tightly • Keep a straight course • Rise up slightly on the foot pegs to absorb the shock • Try to cross the uneven surface at an angle. MOTORCYCLE HUMOUR Surgery! A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a Harley motorcycle when he spotted a well-known cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage “Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiologist, a bit surprised walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and aid, “So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. Snow Bear chassis from a sport trailer. 4'x6' Platform with 3.5' height inside. Torsion suspension. Total weight: approx 400lbs. Tongue weight: appox 15 lbs. Original 4.80-8 wheels were replace with a new set of 4.80 - 12 sport trail rim and tires for a better pull. This trailer was built for a route 66 rd trip with the heat factor in mind and of course comfort. It has been pulled by a Goldwing and achieved excellent performance during the trip, reaching 80 miles per hour when passing large trucks. It is very stable and really fun to pull even in the twisties of Donner Pass! The trailer is fitted with a solar panel, battery and charging station for laptop, cameras etc. It has a rear view camera that transmits wirelessly to a LCD screen mounted on the windshield of the bike. The construction is made of marine ply and fiberglass cloth and also insulated. A roof vent is fitted as well as a large sliding window with a screen. The trailer can also be pulled by a car or SUV in its current configuration or the tongue could be made shorter if the intent is a car. The motorcycle was southbound on Cedar Road when it hit a utility pole. The bike and its rider came to rest in a field near the intersection, but because of its location the accident was not discovered until after 11 a.m. The crash remains under investigation by the RCMP and B.C. Coroner Service. Serious Injury After Collision Near Ogden Point The 55 year old rider of a Silver GL1800 was taken to hospital with lifethreatening injuries to his leg (which was later amputated) after being rearended at Ogden Point 24 Jul 13. Victoria police and B.C. Ambulance quickly attended the victim of the accident that appears to be the result of high speed (perhaps with purpose). The driver of the SUV was also taken to hospital, but with only non-life threatening injuries. The results of this investigation should make for good reading!
