Outreach Summer Associate VISTA Job Description: This position will work to strengthen and expand our outreach efforts with the Food Stamp Program among seniors and families. Materials will be distributed to senior centers, senior apartment complexes, Salt Lake County Meals on Wheels, and the Utah Food Bank’s food box delivery program. Seniors will receive food stamp application assistance as needed. Families who attend the Summer Food Service Program will receive education and food stamp application assistance. In addition, this position will work with volunteers to implement a literacy program at Summer Food Service Program sites. Job responsibilities will include working alongside current VISTA members, volunteers, and working with community partners. This position is a full-time temporary position and is based in Salt Lake City. It is a National AmeriCorps AntiHunger VISTA position through the New York City Coalition Against Hunger (NYCCAH). The start date for this 8-week position is June 9, 2015. The end date is August 3, 2015. We are looking for an enthusiastic, organized individual who can help UAH: conduct food stamp outreach and application assistance at senior centers, senior apartment complexes, and summer food sites create a Senior Food Stamp Outreach Toolkit implement a literacy program where books are collected and distributed to participating youth at Summer Food Service Program sites Preferred Skills: • Excellent written and communication skills • Responsible, independent and open to learning and feedback • Team-oriented with a good sense of humor • Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle • Able to work independently and take initiative • Spanish language skills a plus • Experience with Microsoft office What VISTA is: AmeriCorps VISTA builds capacity in non-profit organizations and communities to help bring individuals and communities out of poverty. VISTA members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. VISTA members focus their efforts on building the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic develop, and otherwise assist low-income communities. VISTAs develop programs to meet a need, write grants, and recruit and train volunteers.
