Setting the Stage
I’m looking forward to meeting each of you and having an engaged dialogue during our breakfast
tomorrow morning. These breakfast meetings with me are

. I recognize ensuring these breakfasts are successful means I have to
among the
participants. Other than myself, there will not be any management personnel present. I will try to
address all your questions but hope you can appreciate that I may be limited in some areas on what I can
openly discuss or share. By the time we wrap up I would like to talk about actions that could be taken to
move the needle and what it would take to do so as well as how long it may take. With that,
so I urge you to come prepared to be engaged and make this opportunity
valuable to you as well as I know it will be for me.

Michael H joined AP&T Contracts in March 2012 as a transfer from
B-2 and JSF Subcontracts, and is a tremendous addition to our staff. He
manages a large portfolio of contracts and proposals across the Directed Energy
(DE) and the Research and Technology (R&T) business areas in Redondo
Beach, CA. In addition, Michael volunteered for temporary relocation to
Melbourne, Florida to support the CRH proposal last Fall. Michael was selected
as NGAS Contracts Employee of the Month in January 2013.
Mary Ann was hired into TRW Defense Systems Subcontracts on 16 August
1982. April 2008, she was hired by Alita Berger, NSD Directorate Business
Manager; then by Jeff C, NSDD IWO Homeroom. November 2010, Ann S asked
Mary Ann to cover the desk of Gloria W while an issue regarding Gloria’s
retirement was resolved. After 2 months of horrendous work conditions, instead
of training someone else to take over the SSSD Contract Director’s Admin’s
desk, Mary Ann took the position. And, just like a fairytale, Mary Ann is living a

The Engagement
• Scheduled for 1.5 hours but allowed for ½ hour extra
– Feed them and they will come
• Focus first ½ hour on getting to know each other
– Name, job, years with company, interests/hobbies and 1 little known fact personal fact
– Mention something about the individual from their pre-engagement fact sheet
• All agree to not use names (of the guilty)
• Commit to no retribution for speaking up and being candid
• Listen, listen, listen and then answer questions, within reason, directly and
honestly
– Own and accept responsibility as their leader
– Don’t be defensive and don’t over commit
• Must demonstrate follow-up action regarding any commitments made to the
group
7
Benefits of Skip Level Engagements
• Demystifies and personalizes you as their leader
– You are a person, not just a name and title
• Enables you to gain a greater insight and understanding of the “truth” as the
ground-force sees it
– Willingness of employees to provide candid, continuous feedback
• Establishes a greater level of workforce trust regarding your future
communications and directions
• Allows employees insight and better understanding into the strategic thinking
that leads to tactical actions they are directed to implement
• Provides an intimate forum for discussing areas needing improvement,
hearing employee opinions and new ideas and concepts some good ideas
• Reveals how effectively your organization is communicating both
downwards and upwards
