In Europe we have, for hundreds of years, been used to seeing paintings and sculptures of the powerful and the depiction of the famous or wealthy individual. Physical likeness was paramount and the subject’s social position emphasised. Oil paintings dominated this tradition. Now the subject can be anonymous or an individual from any part of society, not just the rich or those in authority. The contemporary artists in this exhibition explore many different ways of depicting the human form. Artists no longer feel bound by tradition and often explore different media and processes to achieve thought-provoking work. Here are works from the traditional to the innovative - painting, drawing, photography, video & sound. JOHN RAE What is a likeness? Today the concept of a ‘portrait’ is being expanded and this exhibition shows artists capturing likenesses, discovering character and examining personality. Staffordshire Landscapes: A Personal View 11 JANUARY - 9 MARCH The Staffordshire countryside is one of many sources of inspiration for artist Lisa Henderson. Her work in this exhibition explores the landforms of the County and their rich, everchanging colours, textures and patterns. Also on show will be a selection of charcoal & chalk drawings featuring Cannock Chase and a series of unique collographs. LISA HENDERSON Lisa’s paintings incorporate collaged, recycled and pre-prepared papers. To achieve the richness of texture and colour associated with her work, she also uses many techniques more usually associated with printmaking such as wiping, scratching and breaking into the surface to hold the colour and enable patination. exhibitions shire hall gallery, stafford Re-incarnated Rubbish There will be a large selection of work on show including, wall sculptures, bags, hats, animal sculptures, wacky jewellery and even a life sized free standing model of the Queen, wearing a drinks can Royal crown and accompanied by her Corgi ‘Darling Dash’!
