Design Guidance Notes
Installation
The recommended method of installation of lighting
column anchorages is by post drilling as this ensures
continuity of the slipforming process. All anchorages must
be fixed at the correct centres to suit the flange plate design
and must be parallel to the axis of the column. The drilling
system proposed by the installer must demonstrate a
proven capability to achieve this requirement. It is important
to ensure that the drill is vertically plumb.
Drilling into WCSB (Figure 1a and 1b) must use a diamond
core system for any drill hole ≥20 mm diameter x 50
mm depth to avoid damage to the concrete from rotary
percussion methods.
Figure 1b
Drilling should only take place whenthe concrtete has
reached a compressive strength of 25 N/mm2. The
illustrations show the SSR-128-Karat-164 diamond core
drilling system by Fixing Centre Ltd.

Weep holes
Figure 2
Where weep holes are required (Figure 3), they should
be located at the bottom of the cable trough. Weep holes
should have a gradual downward slope from the base of the
trough to the outer face of the barrier to facilitate drainage.
Accuracy of drilling is essential and only diamond coring
systems should be used to avoid damage to the barrier
concrete. Weephole location should not coincide with
lighting column locations. Weepholes are typically 30 mm
diameter. However dimensions should be determined by
the designer on a project specific basis.

A typical installation rate is eight to twelve anchorage sets
per shift, for a two-man team working with a drilling rig.
Installing weep holes
Testing
Tensile axial load site tests are required to demonstrate
that the anchors have been installed correctly. The project
engineer should nominate which anchors are to be tested.
Testing should not take place until the concrete reaches
its 28 day strength (i.e. 35 N/mm2). The test load should
be set at the nominal load in the anchor at the collapse of
the column increased by 10% (serviceability limit state).
Testing should conform to BS 5080-11 using incremental
loading as clause 7.13.
