The Mission of the Good Shepherd Parish is to give witness and to celebrate the Risen Christ’s Presence in the life of each person. To accomplish this goal we ask our parishioners and visitors to recommit themselves to being disciples of Jesus and in so doing we will strengthen our community and help one another to live our faith in the fullest possible way. “in necessary things, unity; in doubtful things, freedom; and in all things, charity.” Augustine Page 1 - 921 Baptism Please call the Parish Office to sign up for our Baptism Prep classes which consist of 3 consecutive one-hour discussions based on the book “Raising Faith-Filled Children”. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay everyone according to his conduct.” Reflection When Jesus tells the disciples he must suffer, even to death, and then be raised from the dead, the disciples are shocked, and Peter even rebukes Jesus for saying such a thing (Matthew 16:22). But Jesus does not soften his words. Instead, he goes on to tell them that every disciple must undergo the same suffering, carrying the cross, losing everything, even life itself. Following Jesus means carrying the cross. But the cross turns out to be the way to life. When Jesus gives his life on the Cross, he becomes the source of life for all humanity. And when we follow Jesus all the way to the cross—when we accept that suffering is part of life, and undergo our sufferings with Christ and in Christ—life flows forth for us and through us, too. “We adore your Cross, O Lord,” the Church sings on Good Friday, “for behold, because of the wood of a tree/joy has come to the whole world.” (The Roman Missal). Back to School Prayer Lord, please protect all kids and adults heading back to elementary/middle/high school and college, for the new year... Keep them in Your loving care, and help them to stay focused on their studies, and goals. Please help them to grow in holiness, and to serve You and others, during their busy days. Please keep them safe from harm and evil, and may they stay close to You always. In Jesus’ name, we pray…. Page 5 - 921 Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Religious Formation for children ages 3-12 When something takes you where you do not know and yet, all along the way, God continues to provide, it is an adventure. And there is nothing more beautiful. --Sofia Cavalletti, co-founder of the CGS (1917-2011). We are looking for volunteers to share in the joy of the Good Shepherd! Have you ever wondered how the children come to experience the presence of Jesus in the atrium? We are all part of God’s family, members of Jesus’ church called to love and serve God first and then one another. We are all invited to this personal relationship with the Risen Christ. Did you know that each saint the church honors responded to God's invitation to use his or her unique gifts? God calls each one of us to be a saint. The atrium opens up for the child and the adult the mystery of the Scripture and the reality of the life of Jesus, as well as our lives with him as disciples. (Re-read our Mission Statement, pg. 1) Can you offer two hours one day per week after school? Please consider joining in this work with children by growing in your own faith along with our preschoolers through sixth graders. Formation is available to be a catechist or an aide. Join us on retreat (see below). Contact Sue in the parish office for more details. Sessions begin the week of September 22nd. It is…that first and greatest commandment: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart.” What is easier, sweeter, more pleasant, than to love goodness, beauty and love, the fullness of which You are, O Lord my God? – St Robert Bellarmine Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the midst of them.’ (Matt. 18:20) CGS CATECHIST AND AIDE RETREAT To be held at the Parish Center, Saturday, September 6th from 9 am up to and including the 4 pm Mass at St. Augustine’s Church Our focus will be on that weekend’s Gospel "Where two or three are gathered together in my Name” relating the words of Jesus to our work with the children in the atrium. We will also learn about and pray with the patron saint of catechists and catechumens, St. Robert Bellarmine. Time will be spent preparing ourselves and the atria for fall sessions and new windows. Training will be offered for aides. CORI renewal for 2015 is also available. Lunch will be provided. New and ‘old’ volunteers are welcome to join in and be a part of this method of catechesis, a way of life, with the littlest in the Kingdom of God. Please RSVP to Sue Pagliccia via email to sue@goodshepherdmv.com or call her at 508-693-0342 x12 before Wed., Sept. 3rd. Page 6 - 921 Religious Formation Registration for Students & Children On-Going at the Parish Center Registration is on-going for the 2014-15 religious formation programs offered here at Good Shepherd Parish for students and children. A registration form has been printed for all registered families. We welcome new families to register with our parish and enroll their children in our fall sessions. Please note the diocesan policy is that all children must have one full year of religious formation prior to the year of celebrating sacraments. All sessions will begin the weekend of September 20/21, 2014 Religious formation is about a relationship with Jesus Christ, it should not be looked at as just another after school activity. It’s not simply learning “about” God but a time to introduce God and to experience God’s love through prayer, the Bible and liturgy, and community. All that we do points to the Mass, the sacrament of the Eucharist, which is “the source and summit of the Christian life.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church/ CCC#1324) Please see the importance of nourishing the spiritual life of your children and stop by the parish office to register at your convenience. Visit the parish website: www.goodshepherdmv.com for more information under the Faith Formation link. Programs offered are: Life Teen welcomes all high school students. We meet at St. Augustine’s after the 5pm Sunday Mass from 6:30-8pm. EDGE welcomes all 7th and 8th graders. Sessions will be held at St. Augustine’s right after the 4pm Saturday Mass from 5-6:30pm. Just come right down to the basement after Mass. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) a.k.a. atrium offers children ages three through sixth grade a weekly session at the Parish Center on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 3:30-5:30 pm; also Tues. evenings from 6:00-7:30 pm, primarily for working families not accommodated by times held immediately after school. Tuition will remain the same as last year: $35/child with a $75/family maximum. Also, an additional fee of $45 may be paid early for children who will be celebrating the sacraments of Reconciliation/Eucharist (2nd grade or older). Checks are to be made out to: Good Shepherd Parish. Office hours are M-W and F from 9:30-4pm. Remember to bring health insurance information as a new form has to be filled out each year, and bring a copy of the child’s sacrament certificates: if he/she wasn’t baptized here on Martha’s Vineyard, and/or First Communion, if celebrated off island. If you have any questions or are interested in volunteering in these ministries, please contact: Angela Candreva 508-693-0342 x14 for Life Teen or EDGE, or Sue Pagliccia 508-693-0342 x12 for CGS. School is days away and registration is under way which can be completed at the parish center anytime! Please contact me if you have any questions or would like me to mail you the registration packet. The EDGE! Welcomes all 7th and 8th graders beginning on September 20th and will be held right after the 4pm Saturday Mass from 5-6:30pm. Life Teen is for all those in 9th-12th grade. This year we will kick off our program on September 21st and will be held after the 5pm Mass and dinner from 6:30-8pm. Youth ministry dinners will occur after the 5pm Sunday Mass – and all are invited to attend. As you reprioritize your schedules for the school year be sure to consider what it will take this year to follow Jesus. Will it require some sacrifice - yes it probably will, some weeks more than others. This week in the Gospel, the good news, we hear is that we are not alone in this. Jesus knows it is hard and shares with us it is worth the while. As you prepare for school spend 5 minutes and ask Him for His help.
