FAHCE President Ann Mevers (left) gives money collected in teapots at our 2014 Conference to our current treasurer Vickie Hill.
All money collected for the Pennies for Friendship Program benefits ACWW, the Associated Country Women of the World. This organization is the largest international organization of rural women
and homemakers, currently representing millions through the linking of over 376 country women’s clubs and societies in 64 countries. It has consultative, non-governmental status with United
Nations, and has a down to earth approach in promoting international goodwill and offering practical help to its members. Through
projects in rural communities, ACWW aims to improve the standard of living for all women and their families in: health and nutrition, housing and fresh water supply, literacy, small-scale agricultural and income-generating schemes, and leadership training that
encourage women to play a full part in the development of their
communities.
Our state organization collects money to target the establishment
of water systems in undeveloped countries where often women
have to walk for miles to get usable water for their families. In
some places getting water puts them and their daughters in extreme danger. These valuable PENNIES can be collected by individual donations or by collections at club, county or district meetings,.
Or money for this can be raised through of fund-raising sales, competitions or sponsorship events . REMEMBER: EVERY PENNY

Message from Ann Mevers, FAHCE President
To all members of FAHCE,
As we start a new year, the organization needs to raise the membership, look for new areas for volunteering, new projects to work on,
possibly a new state project and get the message of what we are
about to the public. We are a very diverse state and have many areas
that need volunteers. We also we need to look to more technical methods of communications. We as the state board are going to try setting up
conference calls between the district officers to take care of some of the
business that comes up instead of waiting until the fall conference. Also,
District One has set up a web site that is available for viewing.
Volunteer hours are as important as ever. They need to be turned to
your county agent on a monthly basis and then turned in to your district
chairman in October for the year. There will be more about this at the
state conference. Look for more opportunities for your hours.
Please, district chairman for CVU hours , send the kinds of hours your
members turn in to me. I want to see the differences between the districts and share them with the membership
We need a person from each district for the nominating committee. The
office vacant for this year is Vice President of Programs. District III is the
chairperson this year. Please someone step for this position for this year.
Please contact Gloria Jasinski.
Thank you for all the work that has been accomplished in the past and
keep on with all that you do and don't be afraid to explore new venues.
Think floral for the next year and be ready to be colorful at the state conference. The Monday Night procession for the officers will be white
pants or skirt and bright colored shirt or jacket, please no black, brown,
dark green or gray. The theme for Fun Night will be Flower Power from
the Sixties.

COUNTY DISPLAY
BOARDS
Please let us know if
your county wants to
showcase your accomplishments during the
last year.
This popular part of our
conference gives everyone the opportunity to
gain new ideas as well
as learn how FAHCE
benefits communities
throughout our large
state.
The first place award of
$50 was won by Duval
County in 2014.
After a three year absence, Camp returned. The theme of “A Country Girl
Can Survive” featured educational programs focused on emergency preparedness, personal safety, and survival. It was held at the Extension office.
On left, Donnie Worley’s ‘Off the Grid’ program on safety during utility
outages. Lora Fisher’s no weapons, self-defense course was a huge
hit with the ladies. Leslie Long (center) follows along as Lora (right)

District Members Make a Difference
CVU Hours
Last year our FAHCE members
served our communities with a
total of 133,145 hours in HCE
and Community Hours.
On left, District 2 Project Board winner, Carolyn Gillespie, Duval, with
her winning entry. On right, Katherine Allen, Suwannee County Extension Director, talks about the importance of exercise in her presentation
on “Putting Pain in its Place.” President Ann Bennett reports that all six
counties stay active sewing and crocheting for children and adults in
hospitals and homeless, collecting pop tabs, Christmas gifts and
stamps as well as helping 4 H.
CVU’s are Certified Volunteer
Units awarded as credit for volunteer activities within our clubs
and communities.
The hours are important since
they are used by the University
of Florida and some communities such as Duval when applying
for grants. The hours are often
used as matching funds at $19
per hour. Last year this
amounted to $2,529,755.
Each member’s total hours must
be turned in to each county CVU
chairman and to the county advisor by October 1 of each year.
Seventy members attended the District 3 annual meeting where the
450 years of Historic St. Augustine was celebrated. The dancer on left
demonstrated a Spanish Flamenco dance while the buccaneer on right
didn’t seem at all threatened by Esther Lee’s flintlock pistol. Although
Camp Ocala is closing, members from Districts 2 and 3 are working to
find an alternative site. President June Buckner reports that members
remain active collecting toys, box tops and making lap robes, preemie
hats, and Ouch dolls. They also collect box tops for education, food for
food banks, and eyeglasses and batteries.
District 4 President Gloria Jasinski reports that members collected
items for their 100 Anniversary Display Board, held Personal Safety
classes, made and filled Christmas stockings for the Salvation Army and
collected stamps for Habitat for Humanity and Pop Tabs for the Ronald
McDonald House.
District 5 President Lynda Young reports that because of decline in
membership, they meet monthly as a club and are trying new ideas to
increase membership.

A certificate is given to individual members at District meetings whenever a member
reaches 500 hours. A seal is
given for each 500 hours after
the initial 500 hours.
Details for these awards and the
CVU Service Summary can be
found in our state FAHCE Handbook. This information is also
available online or from your
CVU Chairman.
Search for FAHCE Handbook on
the Solutions for Your Life website.

She plans to major in Art History, with a certificate in Non-Profit
Management. She loves her art history class with Mr. Bruns and
had the opportunity to tour London, Paris, Florence, and Rome
last summer, which sealed her interest in art history.
She has served as president of her school’s Future Teachers of
America club this past year, and is copy editor in her Creative Writing class. She has been active in her band’s color guard every
year and in her church’s youth group.
Courtney loves doing 4-H Cosplay (short for costume play), which
incorporates her sewing skills with recycling and repurposing items
she finds at the thrift stores and designing them into costumes representing characters from her favorite games.
Every year, Carol Hommema, State Foundation Chairman,
announces a State Scholarship to a worthy student. Please encourage students from your area to apply for this year’s grant. The
grant application is available in the State Handbook, or by calling
Carol directly. Students must be active in 4 H either in high school
or college for at least a three year period.

Another Great Conference Planned October 5-7, 2015
Ninety percent of last year’s Conference attendees gave it the highest grades possible and this year’s conference
promises to be even more exciting .
Enrichment programs begin at 1:00 pm Monday with Container Gardening and “Steps to Building Your Bones.”
Tuesday classes include Suwannee’s Catherine Rogers helping us learn “How to Put Pain in its Place” while Dr
Linda Bobroff will help us get healthy by teaching us how to control fat, sugar and sodium.
On Wednesday Dr. Dale Pracht will inform us about “Shared Leadership.” In the afternoon, Dr. Marti Gillen will
present “Communication and Critical Thinking” and Dr. Traci Irani “Small Steps to Health and Wealth.”
I am sorry that I was not able to see many of you at the annual conference in Altamonte Springs this past October.
I am well and I thank you for your thoughts and prayers. As I look forward, I am excited about the conference
planned this coming October in Ocala. It’s shaping up to be a memorable conference
with excellent speakers and multiple opportunities to learn and grow. I hope that each of
you take the opportunity to participate and contribute to the great things that FAHCE are
doing in the state of Florida.
I would like to take the opportunity to update you on some exciting things that have happened at the University of Florida, the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and the
Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences. We are excited to welcome a
new university president, Dr. W. Kent Fuchs (pronounced Fox), a new Dean for Research and Director of the Florida Agricultural and Experiment Station, Dr. Jacqueline K. Burns, and a new Associate Dean for Extension - State Program Leader for 4-H Youth Development, Families and Communities, Dr. Michael Gutter. Each have a passion for the land grant mission of the university and are truly “friends of Extension.”
We have also welcomed two new members to the FYCS faculty: Dr. Angela Lindsey, Assistant Professor of Community Issues Education, and Dr. Jenny Jones, Assistant Professor of Nonprofit Leadership. You can learn more
about them, and all of our faculty, on our updated department website: http://fycs.ifas.ufl.edu and http://
fycs.ifas.ufl.edu/Faculty_Staff/
Finally, I would encourage each of you to continue to reach out to the younger generation. As our communities
become more and more segregated by age, young people are losing the opportunity to learn from the previous
generations. At the same time, members of the older generation are losing the opportunity to learn from our youth.
It’s only when we work together that the past can inform the present, the present can inform the future, and the
wisdom, knowledge and skills that result will help us change the world (at least our own small part if it).
