The picture on the front of this edition of the
Tidings comes from the picnic following our
annual meeting in February. The Board of
Trustees set up a display where you could build
a church out of boxes. Under the watchful
eye of church member, Board of Trustees
member, and architect Tom Carney, two-yearold Theo Knoll built his idea of a church. As
you will see from the pictures here, others
also attempted to build their own version of a
church. And while churches are indeed built
out of stone, brick, masonry, and wood (and
in some cases boxes), churches are built out
of something much more; the love, passion,
devotion and compassion of its members.
One of the anthems we often sing is entitled “Come Build a Church” by Ken
Medema. The lyrics really speak to how the church of Jesus Christ is built:
Come build a church with soul and spirit,
Copy Editor
Dr. Ron Morgan
come build a church of flesh and bone.
Production Manager
Alex Sloan-Marrero
We need no tower rising skyward;
no house of wood or glass or stone.
Come build a church with human frailty,
come build a church of love and grace.
Jesus shall be its sure foundation.
It shall be built by the hand of God.

The Florida Conference of the United Church of Christ
Announces Its Annual Meeting Right Here
at Coral Gables Congregational UCC
What an honor! UCC members and clergy from around the state will gather right here in our beautiful, lively,
and historic church over the weekend of May 1 – 3 for the Annual Meeting of the Florida Conference of the
UCC with the theme “Covenant.”
On Thursday and Friday, the various boards and committees of the Florida Conference will be meeting at the
church. On Friday evening, May 1, there will be an open house at Pastor’s Laurie’s to meet and greet John
Vertigan, the new Florida Conference Minister, and Geoffrey Black, the General Minister and President of the
United Church of Christ.
On Saturday, May 2, the Annual Meeting will begin at 9:00 a.m. with opening worship in our Sanctuary. The
all-day meeting will include hearing reports from the various Conference committees and leaders, workshops,
and looking at issues of concern regarding the kinds of initiatives and commitments delegates would like the
Florida Conference to embrace. At 2:45 p.m., a special worship service will take place that will include our
choirs, brass, handbells and the installation of our new Florida Conference minister, the Rev. John Vertigan.
This is a great opportunity for our congregation to shine by sharing its warm hospitality, beautiful music, and
historic building with many Floridians who have never been to Miami or Coral Gables. Can you volunteer to
help greet, usher, serve lunch, be a church tour guide, or anything else that may be needed?
Speaking of which, we need cookies! Lots and lots of cookies. In fact, about 1,000! Can you bake a dozen or
two? We are looking for a variety of cookies including gluten-free, sugar-free, and lots and lots of chocolate!
You may drop them off at Pastor Laurie’s office and she promises not to touch them…except under extreme
duress or to taste test them.
Lunch will be provided on Saturday for all volunteers, but you must be signed up so please be sure to volunteer
with Drew Sandbulte at DrewS@gablesucc.org.
We are also privileged on Sunday, May 3 to have the new Florida Conference Minister, John Vertigan bring the
morning message during our 11:00 a.m. worship, which will also feature the music of our very own Community
Arts Program All-STAR Jazz Ensemble, Bell Choir, Vocal Ensemble and Chancel Choir. Truly a morning not to
be missed!

While Each Sunday is special, here is a list of some very
extra-special Sundays:
Sunday, May 3 - All That Jazz
Aldous Huxley once said, “After silence, that which comes
nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” Join us at
the 11:00 a.m. service when our church’s Community Arts
Program ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble will offer instrumental
music that makes a joyful noise! Also that morning, the Rev.
John Vertigan, the newly installed Florida Conference Minister
of the United Church of Christ will bring the morning message.
There will be great music and inspiring preaching. This is a
morning not to be missed!
Sunday, May 10 - Festival of the Christian Home
On this day we honor ALL the women in our lives who
“mother” us in countless ways as teachers, aunts, neighbors,
babysitters, etc. Celebrate those women in your life by
bringing them to a pancake breakfast at the church from 9:30
a.m. – 10:45 a.m. (A freewill donation will be gratefully
received for the work of the youth program).
Then at the 11:00 a.m. service, our children’s and youth choirs
with members of the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus, will present
The Purim Superhero from the children’s book by Elisabeth
Kushner about young Nate and his dilemma about what costume to wear for the Purim celebration at his Hebrew school. He is aided in the process by his two dads, Daddy
and Abba and his sister, Miri.
Make your mother happy…join her for church.

Sunday, May 17 - Confirmation Sunday
This meaningful service is one that touches us deeply, as we support our young people, many who have grown
up in the life of this church, now standing up and claiming their Christian faith as their pathway for growing
closer to God. Join us at the 11:00 a.m. service to witness how the young voices of our church embrace the love
of God that is in Christ Jesus.
Members of the Confirmation Class and their Mentors
Sunday, May 24 - Pentecost
On this day of Pentecost, the birthday of the Christian Church, we recall Jesus’
words as he commissioned his disciples to go forth in faith, “Peace I leave with
you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” If we are to
fulfill our vocation as believers, as faith filled people, the church must ask, “How
do we help bring peace to our community, nation, and world?” To honor this
Pentecost call for peace, on this day we will renew our covenant as a Just Peace
Church. Wear red – the color of Pentecost!
Sunday, May 31 - Trinity Sunday
With roots as ancient as the eighth century, Trinity Sunday highlights the heart of Christian teaching as we focus
on the divine love made known in Jesus Christ and the Spirit, a gracious reality in the lives of Christians. On
this Sunday, we will also celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism for any of our adult members who have not been
baptized. If you have never been a part of such a sacred moment in your life, you are invited to be a part of this
special service during our 11:00 a.m. worship that morning. Please contact Pastor Laurie for more information.
Sunday, June 7 - Music Ministry Sunday
Be with us on this special Sunday as our Chancel Choir and Vocal Ensemble sing their way into summer with a
variety of inspiring music that will move and inspire us as they do each Sunday throughout the year. While we
will give the choir a little vacation during the summer months, we invite you to be part of our special summer
choirs. See page 9 for more information.

Sunday, June 21 - Father’s Day
In honor of Father’s Day, we will feature the return appearance of the
Gables UCC Father’s Day Singers. All of our great-grandfathers,
grandfathers, fathers, sons, grandsons, great-grandsons, uncles, and
nephews are invited to meet Ron Morgan in the Sanctuary at 10:15
a.m. to put together an exciting men’s choral anthem.
As a special treat for all those who sang in, heard, and cheered on
the Father’s Day Singers, we will have an ice-cream social following
11:00 a.m. worship sponsored by the Board for Congregational Life.
Ice cream and your favorite toppings will be provided. How about
some hot fudge or marshmallow sauce, or maybe some sprinkles or
M&M’s and, of course, some whipped cream?
The Elephant in the Pew
Coming Sundays July 26 , August 2, and August 9
Has there ever been something you wanted to know about your faith,
but were afraid to ask? Well, this is your chance to ask tough questions
about the Bible, church, ethics, or life and get an honest and personal
answer back from Pastor Laurie. Maybe it’s a topic or issue that we
tend to sweep under the rug or ignore in order to keep the peace, avoid
disagreement, or maybe even change… kind of like that proverbial
elephant in the room or, in this case, in the Pew.
Over the past six years, Pastor Laurie has answered questions concerning Palestine and Israel, atonement, angels, the afterlife and even one in 2010 about whether LeBron James,
Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade were really the “New Kingdom” as the Miami Herald declared. (For the record,
she said yes). E-mail, write, or call Pastor Laurie, or go to the Gables UCC Facebook page and leave your question. She just might preach on it! Then join us after worship for the Sermon Feedback Café. Have a little lunch
and a conversation with Pastor Laurie about her sermon for the day. We will meet in Havighorst Lounge at
12:15 p.m.

impressive!
Sundays, August 9 and August 30: The Summer Chancel Choir, joined by the choir-curious, choirwannabes, and all who would like to sing during the choir season but who may not be able to join us. All are
truly welcome, regardless of your level of singing experience.
Sunday, August 23: The Back-to-School Children’s Choir. Our young people entering grades Kindergarten
through Grade 5 are invited to join Ashley Levin and Alex Woods, our Cherub and Agape Choir Directors, in
the Sanctuary to learn an anthem for the 11:00 service and to find out how much fun it will be to sing in our
choirs in the Fall.
Editor’s Note: Many Thanks to our Fabulous Choirs!
Throughout the year, our choirs brought us such beautiful and meaningful music. From our children’s and youth
choirs sharing with us their Heroes through their original musical, to our Men’s Chorus presenting the haunting
“Were You There” on Maundy Thursday, to our Bell Choir ringing in the joy of Easter morning, to the members
of the Vocal Ensemble who add so much to our 9:00 a.m. services and who move us each week through their
inspiring solos, to our Chancel Choir, who week after week provides spiritual nourishment through a diversity
of music, a BIG THANK YOU.
A very special thank you to Dr. Ronald Morgan, our Director of Music Ministry for his passion and commitment to high quality church music, to Dr. Greg Taylor, our parish musician for his enthralling instrumental
music, and directors Anthony Cabrera, Alex Levin, and Ashley Levin for sharing their talent with us.

Sundays, July 5 - July 26
Dr. Adam Ployd, Visiting Scholar
We pray to “Our Father” and we share in the life of the Son, Jesus, but what of the
other one? The Holy Spirit? Or is it Ghost? In this class we will get to know the Holy
Spirit in the life of our Christian tradition. From the earliest days of Jesus’ ministry
to the gathering of believers at Pentecost; from councils debating the Trinity to the
wild goose of Celtic monks; from the origins of Pentecostalism in 1906 Los Angeles
to the cries for justice in the streets of Ferguson; we will see how Christians have
understood and experienced the Holy Spirit as the very presence of God’s love in our
lives.

• That our services are now streamed live online? Invite your family and friends around the world to worship
with us online each Sunday at 11:00 a.m. by going to http://gablesucc.org/live.
• That you can give flowers to signify a special occasion or to remember or honor someone special? You are
invited to place a bouquet of flowers for our altar table each Sunday morning. The occasion will be marked
in our Sunday bulletin. There is a sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall, or please contact the church office at
305.448.7421 ext. 100. You may bring in your own bouquet or we will order it for you.
• That each week paperless bulletins are available? Simply scan the QR (Quick Response) code available as you
come in the Sanctuary, or enter http://gablesucc.org/bulletin.pdf into your device’s browser. You will then
instantly download the week’s bulletin to your device, while simultaneously saving the earth’s resources.
• The church will be closed every Monday from June 15 - August 17? Except for emergencies, no meetings,
no custodians, no staff, no gatherings will be available on Mondays in our main building. It is our hope that
this summer brings Sabbath to our hard working employees and that, with the reduction of lights, air-conditioning, electricity, and custodial help, we will save resources of money and of the earth.
• That each week (or at least most weeks) Pastor Laurie sends out a wrap-up of the events the past week and
what to expect in the week to come? It also mentions those who are ill, special events, and always a bad
joke. To receive Laurie’s Lines, contact Ron Morgan at RonM@gablesucc.org or at 305.448.7421 x 121.

A Very Special Presentation:
Not Safe To Be Me
Sunday, May 31
12:15 p.m. in The Chapel
Join us after our 11:00 a.m. worship service for Not
Safe to Be Me, a film emerging from the story of
our very own Robert Loupo and Safe Schools South
Florida, an organization where much of the training
and teacher education takes place right here at Gables
UCC . This timely and sensitive film about the
issues faced by the LGBT community from the early
20th century to present examines bullying, coming
out, history, religion and suicide through a series
of interviews with young and mature LGBT people
sharing their own experiences.
Paralleling their stories is the biography of
Miami-Dade educator Robert Loupo, whose
own experiences with suicide and assault led him to create Safe Schools South Florida,
an organization that trains teachers to recognize and intervene in anti-gay bullying. Laura
D’Antoni, the film’s director says of her experience, “Interviewing LGBT people who have
been through so much torture in their lives was an eye opening experience. It was inspiring to
talk to people like Robert who have seen so much hatred and still have so much love, hope and
strength to advocate for young people.”
The film, which explores how sexualization, marginalization and isolation have kept gay youth
in the closet throughout the 20th century and even to today, was selected for a community free

Sunday School
Children&Youth
For Infants through Grade 12
9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
Middle School and High School youth have Sunday School through May 31, 2015. They attend the Worship
Services with their friends and family during the summer months from June 7-August 16, 2015.
May 2015, Sunday School for Children and Youth: Our Easter Season continues through May 17 as we learn
about the movement of the Holy Spirit according to the book of The Acts of the Apostles. May 24 is Pentecost
Sunday, traditionally viewed as the beginning of The Church as the Holy Spirit infused the early followers of
The Way after Jesus’ death and resurrection. We are all asked to wear RED that day which symbolizes the Holy
Spirit as fire.
During the month of June the children will be hearing stories about the prophet Samuel and King David and the
ways in which these key biblical figures relied on God’s leading.
During July and August children will hear several stories about Jesus and the disciples from the gospels of
Mark and John. They will also explore the messages about God’s love in the letter to the Ephesians and learn
how Jesus’ followers formed the first Christian Churches.
9:00 a.m. Sunday Mornings:
Chilcare for infants through kindergarten is available in Room 3 of our Arts and Education Wing during the

Snapshots of Youth Ministry
Youth Ministry at Gables UCC is active and never dull. In March,
when the weather was still very mild, 16 of our youths went on
the annual Peace River trip. It was a trip to remember for the river
had plenty of water and the youth had plenty of energy. Noncamping people need to know that the month of March is part of
the dry season, which makes it highly likely that we may suffer
from low water levels on the river.
During Holy Week the youth sold refreshments at the Egg Hunt
and decorated the Easter Cross. In the following months they will be engaged in several fundraising activities
for the End of the Year trip and activities. See below several photos of the activities that have marked youth
ministries over the last few months.
Youth Fundraising Success!
The Gables UCC youth spent the month of February hard at work fundraising for
an organization known as Housing Africa’s Children (HAC). They created a goal of
raising $2,500 within the month and got busy raising funds through a money wall,
raffle, bake sale and walk-a-thon. They were also helped by the 2nd-5th graders who
did a water-jug coin challenge to help raise funds for HAC. In total, the youth were
able to exceed their goal and raise $3,160.75! Their efforts have provided education
for the next school term to over 25 children in Kampala, Uganda through one of
HAC’s partner organizations known as the Nsambya Ex-Street Children Organization.
We are so proud of all the youth who participated in this fundraising initiative and
hope that they continue to advocate and raise funds to help those less fortunate than
them.

Mother’s Day Offering of Letters
Gables Congregational UCC is a partner congregation with Bread for the World, an
organization that stands in a long biblical and prophetic tradition of those who speak
out boldly in defense of people who are poor, hungry and consigned to the margins
of society.
By changing policies, programs, and conditions that allow hunger and poverty to
persist, we provide help and opportunity far beyond the communities where we live.
On Sunday, May 10, we will hold a Mother’s Day Campaign Against Hunger.
Following worship, all church members and friends are invited to participate in
Bread for the Worlds’ Annual Offering of Letters, urging Congress to renew our federal government’s major
child nutrition programs including those for school meals and the WIC nutrition program for pregnant and new
mothers along with their small children.
In honor of your mother, grandmother, or other special women in your life, we invite you to write a letter to
President Obama and/or to your elected legislatures on behalf of so many mothers who struggle every day to
feed their families. In turn you will receive a card to be given to your mother or special woman which says,
“In your honor, I have sent a letter to President of the United States and to my elected legislature to urge them
to renew support for helping mothers around the country feed their children. Happy Mother’s Day!”
We can end hunger in our time, but everyone must do their part. For more information about Bread for the
World and how you can play a part in helping to end hunger, visit http://www.bread.org.
Bread for the World Credo
We are moved by God’s grace in Jesus Christ
To work for justice for hungry people.
They may be in the next house. Or in the next country.
No matter where they live, they are our neighbors.
And we have the power to help.
Charity alone is not enough.
We must urge our government to make fair decisions
So struggling families can provide for their children.
We must write personal letters and emails to Congress
And engage our churches, campuses and other organizations.
We must change laws and structures that allow poverty to persist.
When we turn our faith into action, God uses our voices.
Again and again, we win help and opportunity.
Two fish become many.
Five loaves become enough to feed a multitude.
God is moving in our time
To end hunger,
And we are part of this great liberation.
It is our mission to help our neighbors. Wherever they live.
They are hungry.
And we are Bread for the World.

A Live-Changing Visit
Sunday, June 7
Sponsored Haitian University Student
It was the summer of 2011; 18 months after a devastating earthquake
collapsed much of Haiti’s infrastructure, when a young Haitian man dreamt
of attending the local college in Port au Prince. His dreams became a reality
because our church made a commitment to sponsor him. Sebacien was
selected by HELP (Haitian Education & Leadership Program) and our annual
sponsorship made it possible for him to complete a four year university
degree. With his undergraduate diploma in hand, Sebacien is visiting our
church to thank us on Sunday, June 7.
The Haitian Education & Leadership Program (HELP) provides merit-based university scholarships in Haiti for
top high school graduates from severely disadvantaged backgrounds. HELP serves bright, motivated young men
and women with a proven record of academic achievement for whom the only obstacle to a university education
and a better future is the lack of financial resources.
Partnering with HELP is one of the many ways Coral Gables UCC has been making a different in Haiti. Don’t
miss Sebacien’s visit on June 7, for it marks a tangible outcome of our mission in Haiti.

Just Peace World Café Workshops
Sundays, May 17 and 24
12:15 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. in the Moye Chapel
Dr. Elton Skendaj, church member and UM professor, will facilitate a two part
workshop on being a Just Peace Church. At Gables UCC, we are a Just Peace
Church. What does this mean as we face new and old challenges of violence and
oppression in the United States and the world? The workshop will be interactive
in a World Café format. On the first day, May 17, we will explore our foundations
as a Just Peace Church. On the second day, May 24, we will explore implications
for ethical engagement as Christians to build peace in our communities and the
world. We hope to come up with several action plans for particular just and peace
issues.
A light lunch will be provided. Childcare is available, but please ask for it.

A Just Peace Church: Renewal of Our Vows
Sunday, May 24
Memorial Day weekend is coming and what is Christianity doing? Can we work for
peace, so as to save the lives of innocent civilians and U.S. soldiers? Should the Church
be counter culture and work for peace when so many glorify war? The answer is YES!
Back in 2013, Coral Gables UCC passed a landmark and it almost went unnoticed. It
was our 25th anniversary of being a Just Peace church. Well, two years later we feel like
the spouse who forgot a significant birthday. This oversight begs the question, “What is
a Just Peace Church?”
The Just Peace designation has helped UCC congregations to underscore their ministries of peace and justice.
The approach has differed from church to church: Some became immersed in anti-war and anti-militarism issues, while some focused their energies on U.S. policies affecting Central America. Others strengthened their
multiracial, multi-cultural witness, and still others developed neighborhood ministries, and conflict resolution
education.
At a time when there are so many military interventions throughout the world, our Board for Justice & Witness
is committed to revitalizing the Just Peace designation in our church.
Join us in worship on Sunday, May 24 as we call for peace and renew our commitment to being a Just Peace
Church.
Family Promise Homeless Ministry
Thursday, May 14
7:00 p.m. at the Church of the Open DoorUCC
A mother loses her job, a father is kept from working by an injury,
a family is forced from their home by a fire or natural disaster.
Healthcare costs soar, public transportation is underfunded, affordable
housing is almost impossible to find. These are the reasons why
families now make up 40 percent of the homeless population, and why
one out of every four homeless people is a child. In response to this
crisis, a national organization called Family Promise seeks to bring the
faith community together to help families regain their housing, their
independence, and their dignity.
We are now ready to venture deeper into this beautiful ministry and mission. During the past year we have
hosted four organizational meetings, acquainting us to Family Promise as an organization and to begin the
process of dreaming into reality a Family Promise affiliate right here in Miami-Dade. On Thursday, May
14, we will gather with other congregations to continue building this reality. We will meet at 7:00 p.m. at the
Church of the Open Door UCC at 6001 NW 8th Ave., Miami 33127. If you wish, we will carpool from the
church at 6:00 p.m.
If you would like to learn more about Family Promise and/or volunteer your time and talent please contact
Pastor Laurie (305-448-7421 ext. 116), Drew Sandbulte (ext. 150), or Larry Silvester (larrysilvester@me.com)
who are our congregation’s liaison to Family Promise during this time of development and dreaming.

Leave more than an empty pew...
Leave a legacy.
One of the great gifts of this congregation is its Legacy Fund, an endowment fund that was created many years
ago to provide for the future of our church. Because of the generosity of members past and present, our Legacy
Fund provides additional revenue to our yearly budget, giving us the opportunity to provide more outreach,
more programming, and more ministries. It also serves as a safety net to ensure that the important witness of
this church will continue for generations to come.
The Legacy Fund Committee would like to invite you to pass the blessings you have received on to others by
making an enduring gift to this ongoing fund. Your gift will become a perpetual source of financial support for
Gables UCC and its ministries and missions well into the future. All our funds are invested in ways that demonstrate sound social and environmental practices. Gifts are fully deductible for federal income, estate and gift
tax purposes, and may help you avoid capital gains taxes. More than that, when you make a gift to the Legacy
Fund, you leave a legacy, not just an empty pew. For more information speak with Pastor Laurie or Business
Manager, Dennis Rodrigues.
