Do you ever think about what happens next…after this life? Do you ever get
the feeling deep down inside that says, “There’s got to be more than this”? As
Christians, we cannot help but live life differently in light of the “more than this life”
prodding in our hearts. If eternity doesn’t come and God does not exist, then Paul
is right in saying, “If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more
than all men.” (1 Cor. 15:19) But since God is real, and there is more to come, we
should live differently now. So differently that if our lives make sense to the people
of this world then something is wrong.
We have a choice: We could play it safe…do what isn’t risky, give as long as
it doesn’t hurt our way of life, suffer as little as possible…OR we could live recklessly
for Christ, until we see His glory and see Him do the impossible. Truth be told, if we
truly desire to please God, we cannot live “safe.” We have to do things that cost us
during our life on earth but will be worth the expense now because it gains great
interest for eternity.
Think with me through the “super-saints” faith chapter of Hebrews 11.
Often, we wonder if and how we could ever live like these people in the “Hall of
Faith.” However, a closer look at them and we see that they too were just like us.
Abraham was so afraid of his safety that he lied about his wife, Sarah, and said that
she was his sister…two times! Jacob, who would be a great Campbell's soup
spokesperson, swindles his brother Esau’s birthright with soup. He later puts on
animal hair to trick his father into blessing him, and then spends many years on the
run in fear for his life. How about Moses?...he was a murderer. He was so scared
of public speaking that God sent his brother, Aaron, with him. Rahab was a
Gentile…a woman…and a prostitute [that’s strike 3). We also stumble upon
Samson, who couldn’t keep a secret from a girl he shouldn’t even have been with.
And then we come to David, a “man after God’s own heart” who was an adulterer, a
murderer, and had children who were evil and out of control.
My point is this, these people were far from perfect just like us, yet they had
faith and great trust in GOD to do what might seem crazy over what was “safe.”
Noah built an ark…BEFORE IT EVER RAINED! God’s Word says, “by faith…when
warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family...” (Heb
11:7). How about Abraham?...he waited 100 years to have his first son, then he
offered him as a sacrifice in obedience to what God wanted him to do. God Word
says, “By faith, Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice…” Yet
God came through in the clutch and provided a ram. Finally, think about the
martyrs; “[They] were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain
a better resurrection. 36Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were
chained and put in prison. 37They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were
put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute,
persecuted and mistreated— 38the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in
deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.” (Heb. 11:35-38)

Life Lessons from the Buchmann Abode:
White Dove, Nimbus, Nimbus Gray, and Sail Cloth
My wife and I have recently purchased a house and are in the process of painting the rooms
inside. Choosing the right colors seemed like a pretty simple task to my male mind that doesn't
usually notice the color of a room I walk into. I’ve always thought white is white, green is green, and
red-orange was my favorite color in 3rd-6th grade (before I discovered how great I look in blue). The
paint samples were purchased and before long my house started to look like a Dalmatian, with four
different shades of white and gray on each wall. It was during this process that I discovered the
importance of lighting. The same color looked completely different depending on which wall it was
painted on and the amount of light it received. Sunlight through the windows made the color look
brighter, while our lamps made it turn a different shade. In the corners or behind furniture still another
color appeared. How could the same paint look so different depending on the light that was exposing
it?
I wonder if we too can appear differently depending on where we are? Do we show the love of
Christ in all settings or only when certain “light” is shining upon us? There should not be different
“shades” of our Christianity depending on who is near or in what setting we find ourselves. Our true
color should be founded on our relationship with Jesus. We may say things differently in a work
setting, or when talking to our neighbor, but everything should reveal in us our love of Christ and our
desire to be obedient to Him. John 1 tells us, “In him [Jesus] was life, and that life was the light of all
mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John goes on to
say that Jesus came as the true light to give light to everyone, and to those who receive Him he gave
the right to be called children of God. When we allow Christ to shine on us our “shade” of Christianity
will show Christ’s glory.
My analogy is not perfect though, because the light hitting the paint is only external. We are to
be light. The light in our lives should shine from the inside out. Matthew 5:14-16 says, “You are the
light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it
under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same
way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in
heaven.” Jesus shines His light on us, but when we receive Him, we are carriers of the light. Now, we
can shine into the shadows and darkness to proclaim Christ. Luke 11:33-36 says, “No one lights a
lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so
that those who come in may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are
healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of
darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full
of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.” We
need the light inside us to shine outward, and we need to be filling ourselves with the light. That is all
part of the importance of our time in worship, growth groups, serving, and personal devotion and
outreach. We accomplish our goal “To know Christ and to make Him known” when we allow the light
of Christ to shine in us. Our best form of evangelism is simply living for Christ and letting others see
Him through us.
My house may no longer look like a spotted elephant with various shades of gray on the walls,
but the lighting will always play an important part to the colors I see in each room. As you go through
your journey with Christ, reflect on the light that is in your life and the light you share with others.
Encourage those around you with His love and be a light in the darkness.

Sunday Morning Adult Growth Groups
Parables of Jesus
During Jesus' earthly ministry, one of the primary ways He would instruct His disciples was through
parables. People would gather from far and wide in order to listen to what Jesus said about the
kingdom of God, and the most common way He would explain the kingdom was in parables. But what
does God want us to learn from these parables? In this series, Dr. R.C. Sproul examines several
parables of Jesus, exploring the rich truths they reveal about who Jesus is and what He came to achieve
through His life, death, and resurrection. Go to Room 105/106 at 9:30 a.m. if this topic interests you.
Developing Christian Character
What characterizes Christians? The apostle Paul tells us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Gal. 5:22-23). It is through the Spirit that we develop these
traits, grow in grace, and glorify God. Dr. R.C. Sproul explores these qualities and the transforming
power they evidence. This group meets in the Library at 9:30 a.m.
Victorious Praying
Do you want to become a man or woman of prayer?
What does that even mean? It means that prayer is a central part of your daily experience. It's a
defining characteristic. It means that you are a person who walks with God, led by the Spirit, abiding in
Christ. A person of prayer is following in Christ's steps, going to the Father night and day, in all
circumstances and conditions of the heart. If you want prayer to be the central part of your life, this
group is meeting in the Worship Pastor’s office behind the Information Desk at 9:30 a.m.
The Young Adult Growth Group
Is it possible to live a Christian life in this modern world? How should I respond to the tensions of
this world as a Christian? What if I told you someone wrote you a letter about being a Christian in
today's world? If you take 20 minutes and read this letter, your life will change.
No matter who you are or what you do, this letter is for you. God's life changing plan is simple to
read, easy to understand and practical to implement into everyday life. Join us for this seven part
series that covers money, tension, discrimination and a look at Jesus that will change your life. The
Young Adult Growth Group will be studying this book at 9:30 a.m. in Pastor Brad’s office.

Wednesday Evening Women’s Growth Group
Do you know how God has uniquely wired you? Every believer was created to play a strategic role in
the body of Christ with the gifts God has given them. But many of today's Christians face one difficult
question: How do I discover my spiritual gifts and then use them effectively in my church?
This series will unpack key passages from Romans, Ephesians, and First Corinthians to explore the
role of spiritual gifts in the believer's life, while helping you to pinpoint your own. With Biblical insight
and practical steps, you'll learn how to discover, develop, and deploy your spiritual gifts so you can
live a life of greater impact. This 8 week study meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. in the Library.
Wednesday Evening Basic Bible Overview for Women
Would you like to learn more about the Bible but find it intimidating; either because you feel so far
behind the others or that you just don’t understand how the pieces fit together? This is a beginner’s
level Bible study in an environment where no question is silly. We will read essential points in
Scripture to get the big picture, gain a basic understanding of salvation, recommend options for
personal study, learn how to find things, and learn how things apply to us today. This study meets at
6:45 p.m. in Pastor Jordan’s office.
Wednesday Evening English as a Second Language
On many occasions, Sarah faced very difficult circumstances and made some mistakes along the way.
But she willingly allowed God to stretch her and shape her. As a result, she became a woman of great
faith and an example to help women:
 rest in confidence no matter how uncertain life becomes
 wait patiently on God's timing
 replace their problems with God's promises.
As women trust in God's promises, they will develop courage and confidence that will carry them
through the tough times in life. This group meets at 6:45 p.m. in Pastor Alan’s office.

Pastor Brad’s adult Bible study and prayer takes the previous Sunday’s sermon deeper. Get a cup of
coffee at 6:45 p.m. and walk right in to Room 105/106.

The people of this world thought they were crazy. I’ll say it again; there is something wrong if our
lives make sense to the people of this world.
God didn’t give us a little, He gave us His best. He gave Himself to a people that consistently reject
Him and live for themselves. As Christians, our lives are to reflect Christ, and Christ’s love required
sacrifice. Our lives too, if lived the way of love, will require sacrifice. Our love is shown by how we live our
lives: “Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.” One of the clearest ways we love
with “actions and in truth” is through giving to God and others. By giving, it’s not just money but time and
energy as well…and that can be risky! God doesn’t call us to “play it safe—comfortablism.” “God calls us to
trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble
if He doesn’t come through.” Yeah, it will cost us something; yeah, it will seem uncomfortable at times;
yeah, it doesn’t make sense to the people of this world but it just may help us trust and love God more!

 Cut used postage stamps – leave about a ½ inch around the entire stamp and bring them in.
A collection mailbox will be located at the Information Desk. These will be trimmed and
sorted and then sold to collectors to raise money for Bible study supplies for South America.
