WORSHIP May 3, 2015 11 a.m. Fifth Sunday of Easter Sacrament of The Lord’s Supper PRELUDE Old Hundredth WELCOME Louis Bourgeois (c.1510-1560) arr. P. Post Leader: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. People: And also with you. INTROIT A Grateful Heart Tune: Rockingham arr. Edward Miller (1731-1807) CALL TO WORSHIP from Psalm 22 Leader: I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. All: You who fear the Lord, praise him! Leader: For he did not despise or abhor the affliction of the afflicted; he did not hide his face from me, but heard when I cried to him. All: The poor shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the Lord. Leader: All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord. Let us worship God. HYMN 385 All People That on Earth Do Dwell Old Hundredth PRAYER OF CONFESSION Leader: I said I will confess my transgressions to the Lord. People: And you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Leader: Let us pray: (over) Please stand or sit. As a courtesy to others, please turn off your cell phone and no flash photography during the service. All: Lord, we confess that we have sinned against you and one another. We have been blind to injustice, callous to suffering, and inwardly focused. We have not loved you nor kept your commandments. We have not loved others as you have loved us. We have sought out safety and security when you have called us to discipleship. Lord, in your mercy, forgive us and renew in us a spirit of trust, of thanksgiving, and of faithfulness. Direct our paths that we may be known to all as followers of Jesus. (Silent prayer) ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: Friends, believe the Good News. People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. GLORIA PATRI (Glory to God, #581) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Camille Cook Murray What a Friend We Have in Jesus Converse OFFERING OFFERTORY At the River Aaron Copland (1900-1990) arr. R. Wilding-White DOXOLOGY (Glory to God, #607) Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds; God of God; Light of Light; Very God of Very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; Who for us men, and for our salvation, came down from heaven; And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; And ascended into heaven; And sitteth on the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose Kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Lord and Giver of Life; Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorifed; Who spake by the prophets. And I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the Resurrection of the dead; And the Life of the world to come. Amen. THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD’S SUPPER INVITATION AND GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Prayer continues… Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Prayer continues… THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD Jesus, Lamb of God, Have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, Have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, Grant us peace. DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS ANTHEM Kyrie Andrea Gabrieli (1510-1586) PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION HYMN 35 Lobe den Herren Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty BENEDICTION (Please be seated after the Benediction) RESPONSE With Saving Love Tune: Rockingham arr. Edward Miller POSTLUDE Festive Trumpet Tune David German (b. 1954) GPC is now offering gluten-free communion bread for worshipers whose diet requires this option. Dark gluten-free cubes are on each communion plate, along with the white wheat-flour bread as usual. Today’s choral offertory is an arrangement, by that great American composer Aaron Copland, of the gospel hymn “Shall We Gather at the River.” Written in 1864 by Robert Lowry, the tune bears the title “Hanson Place” a reference to Hanson Place Baptist Church in Brooklyn, where Lowry, a Baptist minister, sometimes served. The flowers in the Chancel today are given by Alice and Jim Close to the glory of God and in loving memory of their daughter, Leslie Powell. The ushers for May are Gordon Grant, Captain; Nancy Benzing, Julie Goffe, Mildred Grant, Shelley Jennings, Cristian Lopez, Jennie Lopez, Deborah McFadden, Nat Semple, Grant Welch, Laura Welch, Marjorie West. Do You Know about . . . PENTECOST? Right now we are in the Season of Easter, seven weeks that represent the time between Jesus’ resurrection and the gift of the Holy Spirit. In these days, Jesus gives his final speeches to his disciples, wherein he promises that he will not leave them alone, but will give them his Spirit as an advocate. Jesus is then taken up into heaven, and the disciples gather together until the day of Pentecost, traditionally a Jewish holiday to celebrate the wheat harvest 50 days after Passover. Now, empowered by the Holy Spirit, the disciples are sent out into the world to reap the harvest of believers. This day is traditionally called the “birthday of the church.” WELCOME Our congregation has been welcoming members and visitors to worship on the Lord’s Day since March 16, 1780. If you are visiting this morning, we extend a special welcome to you and invite you to introduce yourself to a pastor or speak with an usher if you have any questions. If you are looking for a church home and would like to talk with a pastor, please fill out the fellowship book in the pew today or call the church office. To learn more about our history and who we are, we invite you to explore our website: www.gtownpres.org.
