PRESIDENT’S MESSAGe
From the 2014 Banquet :
Welcome to the 2014 KDA year-end awards
banquet. The theme for our banquet this year is
“Spring Forward,” and I don’t know about the rest
of you but I am ready for spring weather, riding,
and shows.
First of all I would like to introduce you to
our current KDA board:
President
Vice-President — Bill Kraatz
Treasurer — Glenn Reed
Secretary — Joan Gariboldi
Membership — Megan Carr I
Show Chair — Sheila Woerth
Jr/Yr Members — Alexa Azar and Rebekah
Mingari
Education Chair — Kristi Fly
Area Representatives:
Bonnie Becht
Susan Posner
Lauren Doyle
Vicki Warren
Jeri Methany
Dean Jarboe
Laura Corsentino
I would like to thank all of you for your
hard work and dedication and I look forward to
working with you in 2015. I also would like to
acknowledge Julie Cook, Cindy Smith, Kelly Azar,
and Allison Deaton for putting on this lovely
banquet and silent auction.
2014 was another busy and successful year
for KDA. One accomplishment I am very proud to
announce is we reached and exceeded our membership goal of 230 members and ended up with
a record number 244. We also had a financially
profitable year with our shows thanks to Regionals in October. KDA has been fortunate to host
two Regional championships in the past, but we
are not guaranteed Regionals in the future. It is all
up to the USDF Regional Selection Committee.
We have applied for 2016 and hope we are
chosen, but KDA must be able to meet our yearly
financial obligations with profits from our shows.
In reviewing our budget for 2015 it became
apparent we needed to rethink holding a CDI3*
and CDI* this year because the qualifying dates
for the Pan Am games are before our show and
sponsorships did not come through, making the
CDI too costly.
Taking the CDI out of the mix, we looked at
ways to improve our May shows. Here are a few
of the changes: First, the KDA Spring Warm-Up
Show will be Friday and Saturday and the 29th
Annual KDA Dressage Show will be on Sunday,
making it a three-day show and allowing competitors to ride in two recognized shows over the
weekend.
We also have restructured our prize money
and increased it by $2,000, which includes $500 in
pony prize money for the first time. As before, we
are rewarding KDA members and offering them
the potential to win most of the prize pot. We
feel these changes will have a positive affect on
entries in May and I suggest if you are planning
on showing enter on time so you don’t miss out.
In addition to our May shows over Memorial Day
Weekend, we will have two schooling shows: the
first one will be in August at Masterson Station
Park and the second one will be in November at
Stone Place Farm in Prospect, Ky. Plus the KDA
Fall Classic I & II will be in October at the KHP.
According to USDF, many GMOs are not
growing, but fortunately we are and in 2014 we
broke our own membership record, as I mentioned
earlier. To keep KDA growing we must always
look and listen to the needs and desires of our
current members and potential members or new
customers. One idea that came from member
Cindy Smith was the need for a breed show in this
area. Cindy’s pre-work included obtaining over
$3,000 in sponsorships and fueling interest with
breeders in our region, resulting in the upcoming
KDA Sport Horse Breed Shows August 15-16 at
Lakeside Arena. We have been getting a lot of
good feedback and support from the breeders in
our region and we hope these shows will turn into
a yearly event.
Another section of the dressage community
looking to KDA for support are the ever-growing
western dressage riders, so to welcome these
riders to KDA we have added western dressage
classes to both of our schooling shows and will be
adding a western dressage section to our year-end
awards ceremony next year.
A third dressage community KDA is supporting are those riding ponies. As I mentioned earlier,
we added $500 in pony prize money to our May
show, and this year all of our recognized shows
will be pony partner shows.
As our membership grows, we have more
shows, more clinics, and with the prospect of
holding a show like Regionals in the future
our volunteer needs have increased. To thank
volunteering members the board developed a
new program for you called “KDA Bucks.” These
bucks can be earned by volunteering at any KDA
event during the year, and you will receive $1 for
every two hours volunteered. These bucks can
be redeemed for up to $35 toward a stall fee at a
KDA show or toward 2016 clinic fees.
I feel these new developments make KDA a
stronger GMO and will attract new members to
our organization, but remember — we are a volunteer organization and it takes all of us to make
KDA work. We need are members to stay involved
and help us to improve and grow.
The yearly operating budget for KDA currently stands at $30,000 and we are anticipating
our show profits will exceed this amount for
2015. There are ways you can help KDA earn
extra money with no cost and little effort. First
is the Southern States proof of purchase labels
program: Just cut off all proof of purchase labels
from Legends, Triple Crown, or any Southern
States feed bag and turn them into KDA to be
redeemed. A second way you can earn money for
KDA is the new Kroger Community Reward Program. Just link your current Kroger card to KDA
and we earn money every time you swipe your
Kroger card. I have printed the information sheets
for the Kroger program and will pass them out to
everyone and ask all of you who shop at Kroger
to sign up and help KDA earn some extra money.
As you all know KDA has partnered with
the KHP and the KHP Foundation to improve the
Dressage Complex. Our first renovation project
was last May: the updating of the Dressage
Pavilion, which was greatly needed. The next
step is to raise enough capital to build a new ring
and warm-up pad, and things are moving in the
right direction. We have gained support from the
new leadership at the park, MSEDA is on board,
and we are making contacts with potential large
sponsors, but all of the donations and support
from our members have been fantastic. The board
wants to thank Rich and Debbie Banas and the
Talley family for their continued financial support
in this endeavor by making them honorary KDA
members. Thank you and thanks to all those who
have helped with this project. We are not finished,
but there is more light at the end of the tunnel.
Three years ago Bill Kraatz presented the
board with an idea of a development grant for
KDA junior young riders. This $5,000 grant is
to assist a worthy junior member with training,
showing, and show-related fees. At this time I
would like to acknowledge the junior members
who have received the first two grants — Rebekah Mingari and Madison Deaton — and
introduce this year’s grant winner, Allison Shields.
Congratulations, young ladies, and thank you for
being such good representative for KDA
Sincerely,
Michelle Morehead

member profile
Joan Gariboldi:
the learning is endless
How did you become
a dressage rider?
As a child I was absolutely fascinated by
the Lipizzaner performances at Temple Farms.
After 25-plus years of countless hours and
dollars, I’m flattered that you are calling me a
“dressage rider.”
Tell us about your
dressage partner
I have a few; everything on my farm is required to do some dressage. My most advanced
horse is a very small PSG Bavarian warmblood
named Elwood who was given to me because
he was too short, too spooky, and too sour. He
has taught me patience and humility like none
other. I never dreamed he would be my Silver
Medal horse. We started at 1st level four years
ago, and whatever we do from here is strictly
bonus.
What are the
benefits of being
a member of KDA?
The camaraderie, the clinics, and the prize
money — for starters.
What are your
greatest challenges
as a rider?
The physical and mental strength and
endurance to keep moving forward overall. It
seems just when you have mentally checked
a box, then you find out you need to return to
that movement or exercise to improve the quality of what is next. It never ceases to amaze me
how the learning is endless at any level.
What do you hope
to accomplish in
the future?
Happy horses that enjoy the show as well
as the training to get there.
If you could ride any
horse, who would
you choose?
Them all, of course. But if Blu Hors
Matine was living, she would top my list.

STRONG OPINIONS ON
PERFORMANCE
“As a professional event rider and trainer, I not only frequently travel with my own horses to train and compete, but I also
have a steady stream of client horses that come in for training. Keeping my entire barn on STRONGID® C 2X puts me at ease,
knowing they are all in good condition and can work at their best.”
Lynn Symansky – Four Star eventing
rider, trainer, coach & clinician

NEW KDA DIRECTORS
VICKI WARREN
I was born and
raised in Grand
Rapids, Mich. I
have been happily
married for over
32 years to my
husband, Kevin.
We have two
daughters who
are both married.
We have two
“grand-dogs” and one grandchild on the
way. We have three dogs. One 14-year-old
dalmation/husky mix and two goldens
that are 16 months old known as the
“golden girls”.
Prior to moving to Lexington, my
career was in education. I taught second
grade for a few years and then went on to
become an elementary school counselor
in Michigan. When we moved to Kentucky, I did not return to education.
I always had a love and passion for
horses but did not have the opportunity
to learn to ride until I moved to Kentucky. I started with lessons first. After a
couple of years of lessons, my husband
bought me my first horse ( who was a
school horse) for Christmas! Eventually
we moved out of the city and bought 20
acres to build our home and 4-stall barn. I
have three horses (two still show and one
is a retired event horse). Of course, we
cannot leave out the dependable two barn
cats who reside in the tack room.
I love to show, but I equally LOVE to
take my home-bred horse, Emmanuel
(E-man), out and about for long trail
rides. He and I both love and enjoy our
one-on-one time.
It is a way to clear our minds and
renew our souls and I am grateful that I
have a horse that is able and willing to
do both.
Joan Gariboldi
My interest in
dressage started
when I was a
teenager, and has
continued to intensify over time.
I am from a large
family and grew
up in Lockport IL
on the back of a
wonderful pony
that my parents bought for $50 from a
neighbor. I have spent the rest of my
riding life riding as much as possible. As
a youngster I started picking up some
extra riding on horses that had serious
behavior issues, and continue to enjoy
working with complicated horses to this
day
I left Illinois after college to pursue a
career in ecology research which landed
me in Aiken SC. After 6 years at The
Savannah River Ecology Lab, I applied
to and was accepted into University of
Georgia, and received my DVM in 2003.
I returned to Aiken where I practiced at
Aiken Equine PA. At that time I explored
as many equestrian disciplines as time
would allow. These included eventing,
foxhunting, driving and most seriously,
dressage. My post-vet school budget
kept me riding challenging (mentally or
physically) horses, but gave me a great
appreciation for how dressage lends
itself to improving any horses confidence
and physical ability to do any discipline.
From Aiken, I moved to Ocala FL
where I owned my own practice and
my riding focused primarily on dressage and some low level eventing. Judy
Oliver, a great young instructor, helped
me solidify my lower level work, and set
me up to be able to move up through the
levels with my now PSG horse, Elwood.
Together we have earned both bronze
and silver medals and are hoping to keep
on progressing.
My husband, Dr. Barry David and I
moved to Lexington 2013, and I have
thoroughly enjoyed the shows and clinics
available in this area. KDA is by far the
most impressive local dressage organization that I have had the pleasure of participating in, and I am looking forward
to being a more contributing member by
serving on the board.
Jeri Fuller-Matheny
Jeri FullerMatheny owns

LLC in Campbellsburg, Ky.
located between
Louisville, Ky. and
Cincinnati, Oh.
Wind Ridge Farm
LLC resides on
over 100 undulating acres and the business is founded on Christian principles
and maintains a positive encouraging
environment. Jeri specializes in breeding
and training sport horses for dressage
and three day eventing. Formerly from
central Ohio, Jeri grew up riding Quarter
Horses in western pleasure, halter, hunt
seat equitation, and the lower levels of
dressage. She doesn’t remember learning
to ride. “My youngest memories, you
know, the very first things one can recall
of life, always involved horses.”
Jeri competes and trains at the upper
levels in both dressage and eventing on
her current horses, Master Oliver and
Whimzical Princess. She began eventing in 1986, and has competed thru the
one star level. Whimzical Princess is
Jeri’s current dressage mount and was
acquired just a few years ago. In her first
year of showing Whim, Jeri earned her
USDF. Bronze Medal. Whimzical Princess
also holds the title of 2013 and 2014
U.S.D.F. Region 2 Sport Horse Mare in
Hand Champion.
Jeri is an “r” licensed Eventing Technical Delegate. Besides the horses, Jeri
holds a B.S. in Political Science with a
minor in History. Prior to starting her
family, Jeri worked as a veterinary technician for Kentucky area equine veterinarians and was involved in politics at the
grass roots. Jeri is married to her favorite
farrier Andy and between them they
have 4 children; Riley, Gretchen, Colbi
and Grant. Together, Jeri and Andy enjoy
rehabilitating sporthorses of all breeds at
