April 2015
The IB students organized the annual water walkathon to
raise awareness of the needs of individuals worldwide who
do not have access to clean water. World Water Facts
were sent to teachers to share with their class and then
classes were invited to collect change for change. On the
day of the Walkathon, March 20 during Flex, over 50
students participated in the event by carrying 10 L of water
in laps through a course in the gym to experience what it
would be like for children in the world who have to walk
long distances and carry water for their family every day.

THEFT
Sadly, once again, we are having
a problem with theft in our
school. iPods and cell phones
are frequent targets.
 Do not leave anything of
value unlocked or unattended
anywhere (this includes Phys Ed
lockers & classrooms)
 Do not hesitate to let the office know if
something has gone missing.
 Be vigilant – we all want to put a stop to
this crime and your help is needed.
This issue affects all of us!
Thumbs up and Thank you to
those students who have found
iPods and other lost valuables and
turned them in to the office so they
can be returned to their rightful
owners!

anyone may be wanting to get rid of during your spring cleaning. We are needing clean dirt, plant stakes,
tropical plants, large rocks and larger ceramic plant containers. If you have any of these items you would like
to donate, please contact Mrs. Oddie-Flikkema or Ms. Slevinsky at 403-347-1171.

…a project supporting Comprehensive School Health
Red Deer Public Schools is committed to Comprehensive School Health with a focus on:
Active Living
Positive Social Environments
Nutrition
To support positive social environments, we are continuing an exciting research initiative…
the Resiliency Project.
We all go through ups and downs in life. Regardless of the experiences life throws our way, the key is the ability to keep
moving forward. The teenage years brings their fair share of these experiences, so it’s important to have the insight and
skills to make things better…this is called resiliency.
Resiliency is the ability to overcome challenges of all kinds: trauma, tragedy, personal crisis, plain old life problems, and bounce back stronger, wiser and more personally powerful.
Nan Henderson, MSW – Resiliency in Action
The Resiliency Project:
The spring screening dates are coming up. The screening process will be the same format as
used at the beginning of this school year.
Red Deer Public Schools and its partners are continuing in the second year of a research project to enhance the
emotional and mental well-being of all students. Targeting students in grades 6 to 12, we have the opportunity
to assess and develop programming to enhance the health and wellness of our students. This project involves
screening all students in grades 6 to 12 using a series of questions focusing on the areas of emotional health and
mental wellness.
As parents or guardians, you will be made aware of any concerns that are raised by the screening in regards to your
child. At this point, as part of the research project, your child may be asked to participate in recommended interventions.
Please contact your school and ask for the Resiliency Coach if you have any questions.
Resiliency…developing students who are…
Creative, optimistic, hopeful, industrious, trusted, happy, satisfied, successful, connected, achieving.
