A few words from the President
Welcome to new members and Thankyou to all those who have renewed membership.
At the time of the AGM and February Newsletter, Petrea Bates was hopeful that she had finally
overcome the problem of living in a “mobile & internet black hole”, but unfortunately the difficulty is
continuing. Consequently at the March meeting, one of our newest members, Sam Howard, put up
her hand and offered to take on the role as Newsletter Editor. This is greatly appreciated – especially
as Sam had already volunteered to help as a Dressage Assistant AND she has also offered to help
organise a T-Shirt Hack Day at the end of May. Thank you Sam!
It seems that members are aware of the need to try to make the Treasurer’s job easier – Thankyou.
Please continue to make the Treasurer’s job easier by:
filling out membership forms correctly (including signing as required)
paying correct amounts,
paying by due time,
clearly identifying who payment is from and what for etc.
Unfortunately the Show Horse Coordinator + Assistant Coordinator positions are still vacant, however
the good news is that various members are offering to take on responsibility for organising specific
events – this applies to both Show Horse days and Rallies e.g.

Saturday 28th March – Lori Keevers has offered to organise a Giant Car Boot Sale of
Equestrian Gear. It will be at the Witches Hat including carpark and grass area. There will be a
Sausage Sizzle and cold drinks for sale. Lori has already started advertising this event and
there has been a lot of interest shown so it should be a great day!

Sunday 12th April – Julie Donovan has offered to organise a Training Hack Show in the Centre
Ring. This will be similar to the Dressage Training Days – a competition with classes and
ribbons, however the Judge will give everyone advice about how to improve their performance,
and perhaps practice workouts again. A similar day was held in 2014 and it was very popular.
More information will follow in newsletters and on the MARC website soon.

Saturday 30th May - Sue Thurlow has offered to organise the Rally and give advice to riders
about riding Dressage Tests / Movements (as the 22nd February Dressage Practice Rally was
cancelled due to the weather) - information to follow in newsletters and on MARC website.

Sunday 31st May – Sam Howard and Zoe Olszowy have offered to organise a T-Shirt Hack
Show – again more information to follow in newsletters and on MARC website.
Please feel free to offer your ideas and suggestions to make MARC an even better club in 2015.
Looking forward to seeing you at MARC events in 2015

Letter from the editor
Well thanks for the welcome Pam, I am happy to relieve Petrea of her difficulty and
take on the newsletter. I will however have to ask for a little patience from the
members as I find my feet in the pages of journalism. I have (and will most likely
continue to) milk Pam for all of her knowledge until I get going, and ask anyone to
feel free to throw in any ideas they may have to improve the newsletter.
This issue will be fairly brief, Pam has outlined all reminders in her page so no need
for me to repeat them. I will do my best to throw in some entertainment where
possible, and will most likely wander around with a camera from time to time to catch
some snaps for everyone’s viewing. Once again I will continue with the photo
competition, so by all means get them sent in, the info for that is below as usual.
Apologies for the issue being a little late, I have tried to squeeze a couple of March
events in so we have something to look at.
Thanks for your patience; I hope next issue will be slightly more appetizing.

Sandra Trott Clinic – poles & gridwork – 1st March
Many Thanks to Sandra Trott for running this great day, which was enjoyed by everyone who participated (and a
few spectators!) MARC also Thanks the Fraser Coast Horse Trials who lent the equipment for the day – it was
much appreciated. (Thankyou also to the Maryborough Pony Club who offered us their equipment if needed.)
The layout of poles and small jumps looked deceptively simple, but the exercises proved that there was a lot more
involved. Once again, the main aim of the exercises was being able to ride on a planned consistent line (either
curved or straight) – some found this easy, but others found it more difficult!
Everyone started out walking over the poles a few times, then trotting and then cantering through a curved arc of
poles. Those who could manage a desired consistent line, then did the same with the poles raised at one end.
Four very small jumps set up in a square provided a range of exercises to trot and canter through – including
practicing change of lead with change of direction over jumps. Again the more capable horses and riders did more
complex patterns to work on control of line.
Sandra has kindly supplied us with a cavaletti diagram. On it are the distances used in some of the patterns she
had us do, as well as some more ideas for the keen grid builder at heart. Thanks Sandra.
Also, don‟t forget Sandra travels to the indoor at Maryborough park every second Tuesday for lessons. Her next
date is 24/3/15. If anyone wants to book or enquire, phone Sandra on 0447 589 249.
Thanks to Violet Whitaker and Sue Thurlow for the photos below.
3
Pam Thurlow & Saffi walk over poles.
Lori Keevers & Stephi show nice leg action.
Julie Fattore & Banjo did it all easily!
Megan Edwards on Peppers Promise on his second-ever outing did great! They showed good style trotting and cantering over
poles and low jumps.
L to R:
Emily Perina, Lynne Larkin and Sam Howard – their horses all show great leg action as they trot through the poles.
4
Carissa Koeppen & Tarquin canter neatly over the poles.
Jenny Birch & Rock show great style cantering over poles.
Julie Fattore & Monty practise change of direction and lead.
Anna Szyszka’s Stardust Messenger showed neat feet and a bit
of flair as she cantered over poles.
Hint: for easier viewing of gridwork patterns, print out pages 6 and 7

Dressage competition 8 May
The dressage day was a success, we didn‟t have the large numbers as usual for the March event, but we can likely
put that down to the recent weather events and of course the persistent heat. The day ran well to time and with only
a few scratchings, the schedule wasn‟t messed around much at all. The pesky heat helped some riders make the
decision to not ride their last tests, and certainly brought upon the fast change out of competition clothes into tshirts and shorts.
A big thank you goes out to all the competitors who did brave the heat, as well as all of the helpers/ pencillers/
scorers and of course the judges. Judith and the team from Picnicin ran the usual awesome menu, and without the
efforts from our organizers, these dressage events wouldn‟t be available to us.
Here are a few pictures from the day, courtesy of Sam Howard and Alison Davin. Apologies for any people missed.

Meet our memfurrs
As new „editor‟ I have decided to take on the advice given by my predecessor and add a new segment. It will
require a stir of the creative juices of our members to make it interesting.
„Meet our memfurrs‟ is designed for us to get to know the furry members of MARC. As we all chat away getting to
know each other, this is a chance to get to know the pony‟s side. I have started with my own crazy nag to kick
things off. If anyone else would like to share their faithful steed‟s innermost thoughts, have your horse answer the
questions below, include a picture if available, and email to me at moo_clock@hotmail.com
MARC Photography Competition This has appeared to be popular so it will continue in 2015.
