Rod Olivares at rod2012@live.com 2 FROM THE EAST Brethren, I’m excited to say we have quite the busy and exciting schedule ahead of us for the month of June before we go dark for the summer and I hope that many of you will join me for the several upcoming events we have lined up. On June 2nd we will be initiating 2 new men into the fraternity and on Saturday June 20th (pending dispensation approval) we will be holding a special communication for the purpose of raising 5 of our Fellowcraft to the sublime degree of Master Mason. Please make every effort to attend one or both of these degree conferrals if you’re around. It’s such an exciting and energetic experience to have a full lodge room during a degree conferral and I think it would be such a great way for us to head into the summer. On a separate note, as many of you have heard me talking about for the last couple of months, we are on the cusp of finalizing major renovations to the lodge building that we are hoping to get accomplished while we are dark. Everything from the floors, to the walls, to the ceiling as well as fixing the chairs. I have been working very closely with PM Hinnawi and other members of the Hall and & Library Association as well as members of the Lodge Improvement committee to obtain quotes and secure the funding needed for this project and we are very close to finalizing the entire project. If you have an opinion on the matter and wish to be heard (we all have opinions!), please plan to attend one of the upcoming stated communications so that your voice can be heard. Lastly, on the topic of the Hall & Library. At the recent meeting of the association in May, the board opted to forego adopting new by-laws in order to take the time to revamp the entire structure of the association and implement new by-laws that align the Hall & Library much more closely with the lodge itself and its members. This is a big step in the right direction for our lodge and one that has major implications for its overall functionality. I cannot thank PM and President of the Hall & Library Marwan Hinnawi enough for his cooperation in this endeavor. Right now I am planning on presenting the new H&L bylaws to the lodge at our meeting on June 16th in order for the lodge to understand the new structure and how their voice will be more actively heard as a member of the holding corp. My sincerest hope is that we will be able to get the new by-laws adopted by the end of July at the latest (hopefully sooner) and that come September when we get back to work as a lodge, we will have a newly renovated building and a newly restructured Title Holding Corporation! Like I said, a busy and very exciting near term schedule! I look forward to seeing you at our degree conferrals in June and I hope you all have a wonderful summer. As you may or may not know, Pennsylvania is known for having ritual that is very different from the ritual used in most other states. There are obviously going to be some differences from jurisdiction to jurisdiction (as those of you who have visited lodges in other states well know), but I've always heard Pennsylvania ritual is noticably different from anything you will see in any other state. I've yet to see this ritual in person, but I've always wondered why it's so different. I found the following information compiled by PM Ron Blaisdell of Capital of Strict Observance Lodge No. 66 in Lansing, Michigan that offers some insights into the origin of the PA ritual and since last month I shared about the unique ritual in Louisiana, I thought I'd share this month about Pennsylvania. Old Ancients: The exclusive ritual used by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania This ritual’s name is actually derived from the fact that it was the ritual of the Ancient’s Grand Lodge during the schism of the Ancients and Moderns (1751– 1813). Interesting to note here that the original Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania (of which Benjamin Franklin was Grand Master in 1734) was later part of the Modern’s Grand Lodge (and Franklin served as the Deputy Provincial Grand Master of Pennsylvania for the Moderns). The first Pennsylvania lodge to be charter by the Ancients was established in 1758, and their Provincial Grand Lodge was chartered in 1761. The Moderns Provincial Grand Lodge ceased to function in 1785, and the 1786 the Ancients Provincial Grand Lodge declared their independence from England. The work of the “Old Ancients” ritual can best be compared to the work done by Calcutt and Hutchinson prior to 1772 when William Preston started working on the ritual (Preston's ritual was known for being extremely long and involved.. Supposedly the 12-parts of his Master Mason lecture took half a day to recite). Many brethren confuse the “Old Ancients” ritual with that of the English Emulation Ritual. This is not possible though, as the Emulation Ritual is a result of the Lodge of Promulgation that worked out the differences between the Ancient’s and Modern’s rituals in 1814, after the reconciliation and formation of the United Grand Lodge of England. Additionally, there are 4 lodges in Pennsylvania that do their work in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect. Including one in Philadelphia that also conducts their business meetings in this dialect. 5 Special Announcements JOB WELL DONE Montgomery-Cornerstone’s May Blood Drive was a success thanks to you!
