The California Energy Code
(California Code of Regulations
Title 24, Part 6 California Building
Standards Commission) was updated
in 2013 to improve the energy
efficiencies of changes covered
by a building permit in the state of
California. The section that affects
open office furniture is within section
130.5.d.
The code requires a higher level of coordination with the building
and trade professionals. It will be imperative to communicate with the
building planner and/or appropriate authorities to coordinate the location
of controlled/uncontrolled receptacles. This will impact planning with
120 Volt furniture receptacles in office furniture products. The code
also impacts the planning of 120 Volt building receptacles. Furniture

at the onset of a new project or product reconfigurations which require a
building permit.
Controlled and Uncontrolled Receptacles
The most important new concept created by this energy code is
“controlled” and “uncontrolled” receptacles. Controlled receptacles
are connected to a circuit which is controlled by a remote switch and/
or occupancy sensor. When a space is not occupied power should
be switched off for the controlled circuits. Controlled receptacles are
sometimes called a “switched” receptacle. Uncontrolled receptacles
are connected to circuits that are always on even when the space is
unoccupied. Controlled and uncontrolled receptacles are required
in each private office, open office area, reception lobby, conference
room, kitchenettes in office spaces and copy rooms. The locations of
uncontrolled receptacles are restricted. Uncontrolled receptacles must
be within 6 feet of a controlled receptacle.

When a furniture installation is planned in a California building after July
1, 2014 it must comply with the energy code. To ensure compliance

Verify the building is wired in compliance with the California energy
code.
Verify the furniture base feed/top feed power supply is wired with
controlled and uncontrolled circuits.
A clear understanding of which loads are to be connected on the
controlled/uncontrolled circuits. Obtain direction from these parties and
plan receptacle locations per their plan. (If no plan is available start with
all loads on the controlled circuit except a computer.)
Verify the location of the manual control switch of the building is
conveniently located near the workstations (not blocked/covered by
furniture).
Based on this…
COG /Haworth shall provide labels to mark controlled receptacles on
the job site.
COG /Haworth will indicate on installation plans which receptacles
require a label.
COG /Haworth will plan for an uncontrolled receptacle location within 6
feet of a controlled receptacle.
