Other Upcoming Meetings, Events, and Miscellaneous Issues
Math Tutoring and STEAM Program Volunteers Needed
MSPE is looking for volunteers to be tutors at Thomas Jefferson Middle School (TJMS). We
will be tutoring general math for students in 6th to 8th grade on Tuesday nights, beginning
Tuesday, April 7th from 3:00 to 4:30 at TJMS. Don’t worry about not having practiced math
problems recently; these are students that are just looking for a little extra help with their math
homework.
TJMS also has an after school STEAM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and
Math) through the Boys & Girls Club, and they would like our help on Thursdays from 4:10 pm.
to 5:10 p.m. for the Engineering portion, beginning Thursday, April 9th. They have a curriculum
that involves robotics and other engineering topics to get the students interested in engineering.
This is a new program for the local Capital City Boys & Girls Club, and they don’t have any info
on their website yet, but you can check out a companion program at this website
http://www.bgcgw.org/steam/ if you’re interested in some basic info about the program.
If you would be interested in helping with either or both of these programs, please email or call
Jason Sommerer at Jason.Sommerer@bartwest.com or 573-659-6745. We are hoping to have
enough interest to provide 1 or 2 volunteers for each program one night per week. We would be
looking to rotate our volunteers to go to TJMS about one time per month. For this spring, that
would probably be once in April and once in May. To make that work, we are looking for 12 to
14 volunteers.
If you would like to help, but want to volunteer less often or more often, please let Jason know
and we’ll work you into the rotation on a schedule that works best for you. Please let Jason
ASAP if you are interested in helping. You won’t need to commit to a specific tutoring date yet;
we just want to get an idea of how many volunteers we’ll have so we can decide if we can help
TJMS with either or both of these programs. Once we have our list of volunteers, we’ll follow
up individually with a date that works for you. TJMS is located off South Country Club Drive
by the Fairgrounds. We’ll get more specific directions and contact information to you before we
start tutoring.
Thanks for any help you can provide as we work to encourage more students to pursue
engineering!
Friday, April 10, 2015 - P.E. Certificate Presentation Ceremony
The date for the next P.E. Certificate Presentation Ceremony is set for Friday, April 10, 2015.
This event will begin in the Capitol Rotunda, Jefferson City, MO at 2:00 p.m., to be followed
immediately by a cookie and punch reception that will usually last until 4:00 p.m. Stacey Meyer
may still need a few volunteers to help set for the reception and to serve the punch and cookies.
If you have time and would be willing to help on April 10th, please check with Stacey Meyer at
573-636-4861, or at smeyer@mspe.org as the date of the Ceremony approaches. It also would
be nice to have a few Jefferson City Chapter members there to talk to the newly registered P.E.’s
about the value of licensure and how MSPE could be beneficial for them. Please consider
attending if you have the time and are available on the April 10h.

in Jefferson City, between Stadium Blvd and Ellis Blvd. Signs were installed indicating that this
section of roadway has been adopted by the "MO Society of Professional Engineers". Stay tuned

Opportunities for Chapter Involvement
The Jefferson City Chapter of MSPE is looking for members who would like to assist with
chapter activities. Please contact Jason Sommerer at Jason.Sommerer@bartwest.com or by
phone at 573-659-6745 if you are interested in helping with one or more of the following:
•
Help plan social and PDH activities
Anything from helping think of ideas for PDH presentations to ideas for locations to hold
social activities. Help with logistics of those events and benefit from the fun you’ll have
meeting chapter members. Level of involvement to be determined by you.
•
Promote Engineering to Junior and High School Students
Give back to the youth of the community! Activities such as tutoring and mentoring in
math and science classes. Assist with contacting teachers to find new locations for
MSPE to promote engineering to students. Promote and assist with MATH Counts.
•
Promote Engineering to College Students
Assist with chapter efforts to increase MSPE’s presence at Lincoln University and efforts
to start a Student Chapter with pre-engineering students. Brainstorm ideas for MSPE to
increase involvement at other colleges and universities.
•
Enhance our Chapter website
Any ideas to make our website more appealing? Work on enhancing the chapter’s
website design, navigation, content or any other aspect you can engineer up.

Membership Update
Please remember that membership is vital for our society. If you know someone who is not a
member of MSPE, please give them an application and invite them to attend a meeting. The
application is also available online at http://www.mspe.org/membership.html. First time
attendees, member or not, will receive a free lunch. Also be sure to tell them about the
Professional Development Hours (PDH) opportunities and the other benefits of being a part of
MSPE.
Request for Educational Foundation Donations
The MSPE Educational Foundation needs your donations. The MSPE Educational Foundation
provides a tax deductible way for members to benefit the educational outreach activities of our
society. It is important to have the resources to reach out to the younger people. We hear
frequently that there will be a shortage of engineers in the future and many kids never know that
their interest in building, and fixing, and calculating, and discovering can be developed into a
wonderful career in engineering. A tax-deductible donation is also a way to help MSPE when
you do not have the time to be more actively involved. Please send your donations to:
