Certified nurse assistants (CNAs) work directly with residents or clients in long term care facilities, hospitals, home health care, doctor’s offices, and a variety of other health care settings. CNAs (under the supervision of nurses) play a vital role by providing physical care and emotional support to patients. WHAT DO CNAs STUDY? The CNA course is a 102-hour program that prepares students for certification as a nursing assistant in the state of South Carolina. Students receive training in basic nursing care, including a combined curriculum of classroom lecture, simulated laboratory care, and hands-on clinical experience in a Columbia area long term care facility. The course prepares students to successfully pass the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Test. A criminal background check is required. PROGRAM COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS Students must complete the course with a 70 percent average on all written tests, including the final exam, and demonstrate the ability to perform all the skills required of a CNA. Students must also have a positive attitude while performing hands-on skills including caring for patients in a safe and prudent manner. STATE CERTIFICATION AS A CNA Upon completion of the CNA course, students will be eligible to take the (NACES) Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services Exam for South Carolina State Certification. A discussion of the application process and a review of material will be included in the coursework. JOB PLACEMENT Enrollment and successful completion of the Midlands Technical College CNA training program does not guarantee employment. Efforts will be made, however, to have students become aware of job opportunities and meet prospective employers.
