OPENING DAY DUCK SHOOT AND END OF YEAR PRIZEGIVING 2ND MAY. Next committee meeting 7 April, 7pm at 3 Furlongs Hotel ~Wayne Leslie, Commodore Our February weather was not up to scratch - it was rather windy with a lot of cloudy or partly cloudy days and as usual little rain. Not good for the farmers and water tanks, great for harvesting. During February our temperatures were mid to high 20s and would have been hotter without the wind. There were a few nippy days when one thought Autumn was arriving early but that sorted itself out. Our rainfall this year for February was 67mm and February 2014 was 66mm. Our driest February was 1990 with 3mm and the wettest was 2004 with 260mm. The first two months this year we have had 103mm and in 2014 we had 110mm. Do you have a sore finger or thumb and need to keep a plaster dry? Try cutting a finger off a disposable glove and put over your finger and maybe a piece of tape around the bottom to seal it; it is a saving on plasters and it works. ~Bev POLLING PLACE The Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall proved to be a worthy polling booth last Saturday, with easy access, especially those who have difficulty getting uphill, and a short walk for voters in the rain. NZFH: At the inaugural meeting in March 1971 the New Zealand Federation of Historical Societies (hereafter referred to as the Federation) was formed, with 44 historical societies listed as members later that year. In December 1973 the Federation was incorporated at Hamilton. Members are made up of historical societies, museums and trusts, schools and students, relevant interest groups - and of course people with an interest in New Zealand's history. The aim of the Federation is to encourage and assist historical societies, communicate by newsletters, hold an annual conference, publish the Federation journal, NZ Legacy magazine, hold regional meetings, field trips and social events (such as dinners), advise of workshops and training. The Kaiwaka Historical Society has ‘paper’ records stored in the Kaiwaka Library. With museums at Matakohe, Mangawhai and Wellsford, the KHS does not try to replicate what they do, and records local history for reference purposes. I need no other plea, It is enough that Jesus died, And that He died for me. (Last words of British Evangelist, Tom Rees) EASTER SATURDAY THE BURIAL O death, where is your sting? O grave, where is your victory? But thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:55+57 EASTER DAY THE RESURRECTION A woman diagnosed with a terminal illness called on her pastor to plan her funeral. On one matter she was insistent; "I want to be buried with a fork in my hand", she demanded. Her perplexed pastor asked why. "Well", she replied, "in all my years of attending church socials and pot luck dinners I always remember that as they cleared away the first lot of dishes someone always said, “Keep your fork!" It's my favourite part because I knew something even better is coming. So I want people to see me there in that coffin with the fork in my hand and know: 'Her best is yet to come!" (Lorne Peachey) Jesus said, "Because I live you also will live" John 14:19 Kaiwaka’s newest Justice of the Peace for New Zealand - Wendy Howard was sworn in at the Whangarei District Court on 19 March 2015. She is seen here with Sue Farrant, Registrar for the Northland Justices of the Peace Assn, and Justice McDonald. Wendy is regularly at the Kaiwaka Library or the front off ice at the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, and will put a sign in the window when she is available at either location. KAIWAKA LIBRARY Book Swap The next book swap is coming up soon - please have all your large print and audio books back to the library by Sunday 12 April so they can be included in the swap. Wheelchair Ramp You may have noticed one or two changes to the front entrance of the library recently. A wheelchair ramp is being installed to the side of the steps, and a handrail will be put at the other end. Book Review Recently I’ve read An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, by Chris Hadfield Colonel Chris Hadfield is a Canadian astronaut. He first came to my attention via Facebook, with a video he made on the International Space Station answering the question "is it challenging to brush your teeth in space, without getting toothpaste up your nose?" He made many videos about life in space while on the ISS. Later he became more famous for his rendition of David Bowie's song 'Space Oddity'. He was working hard to bring life in space to the world - especially in Canada. The book takes a look at his three journeys to space, including on the Space Shuttle and a Soyuz rocket to the ISS, and his life before and in between. It's a fascinating look at a driven, determined man, how he got to where he is today, and how he achieves his goals. It's an easy read, and I recommend it. This book is on the Rental Non Fiction shelves in the library until July, when it will shift to the free Non Fiction shelf. "Holly didn't expect to be a widow at thirty -two. She also didn't expect to be so big. After her husband's death, food was the one thing she could always count on. Now, those extra pounds make flying coach feel like medieval torture--especially when she's squished next to Logan Montgomery. A personal trainer to famous pro athletes, her seatmate is so hot that he makes Holly sweat in all the right (and so embarrassingly wrong!) places. "Though Holly doesn't make the grade on Page 17 Logan's first-impression meter, he finds himself intrigued by her sharp wit and keen insights--a welcome change from the highmaintenance models he dates--so he impulsively offers to get her back in shape. A little skeptical but ready to make at least one positive change in her life, Holly agrees..." (overdrive.com) If you want a classification, I'd label this a chick-lit novel - light and fun, and I enjoyed it a lot. I read this via the online Overdrive service, on my tablet, and there's a copy at Dargaville that can be requested by filling in an orange request form, there's no charge. Like his brothers, Jim, Dick and Ken, he headed off as a teenager for work in the bush. As far as I can fathom, his last job was with the Dreadon contract in the far north. George followed bullock teams and wagons in bringing out kauri logs, hard, rough work. From all accounts, he was a tall, strong, good- looking guy, very popular, the life of the party. When war was declared in 1914 he joined the army, trained for a short time at Trentham and sailed for Egypt. But George did not return. He died as a result of his platoon moving forward into action in France. The big guns of the British artillery in the rear were firing a barrage of shells over the heads of these advancing troops. One shell fell short. George was very badly wounded and tried in vain to crawl back to the medics. His luck failed him. He bled to death there in the field of Belgium, France a long way from Kaiwaka.” ~ from: ‘OF TIMES GONE BY’ –Memories of Jack Thornton 2004 George, born 9 January 1888, was the son of George and Margaret, nee Morrison (born in Nova Scotia) and had 12 brothers and sisters. Their farm was on the Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Road. His brothers Jim and Ken served in France, and his sisters Clara Lucas and Ina Saunders nursed in England. George Alfred was a Private, Wellington Regiment, N.Z.E.F. he embarked from Wellington on 2 April 1917 on the Corinthic for England, and arrived in France in July 1917. He died of wounds at Etaples, France, 6 Dec 1917, aged 29, and is buried at Belgium-Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery The NZ Transport Agency is asking motorists to take extra care when travelling on the Brynderwyn Hill (SH1) during the next five weeks as work continues to cart earth to a fill site as part of the safety upgrade project. From this Monday,[30 March] up to 10 trucks an hour will begin moving earth from the quarry at the top of the hill down the highway to one of the project fill sites on the opposite side of the State Highway, says the NZ Transport Agency’s Auckland and Northland Highway Manager Brett Gliddon. “The trucks will cross the State Highway at a controlled point managed by staff to ensure the safety of all road users. Traffic on the State Highway will continue to have priority.” The trucks will run during the operational hours of 7am to 7pm, seven days a week. However, there will be no truck movements over the Easter or Anzac holiday weekends. “These truck movements are in addition to the current work already underway at the site.” The NZ Transport Agency and its Photo below: George Dreadon’s bush camp 1912 - George is far right.. Ref. The work on the Brynderwyns will see the highway widened, a number of tight corners removed and a wire rope barrier installed to improve safety and resilience along this important stretch of highway. ~NZ Transport Agency press release BARRY CURTIS PLUMBING LTD REGISTERED CRAFTSMAN PLUMBER Phone 4315572 027 257 9884 25 years experience Friendly reliable service All plumbing and maintenance Alterations and new housing New wood fire installation Spouting Competitive rates PROMPT EFFICIENT SERVICE Yang Style Tai Chi Classes For Beginner And Practitioners At The Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall Every Tuesday Starting at 10.30 am Come Along And Have Some Fun While Improving Your Balance Health And Fitness For More Information Contact Andrew Young 09 4223424 taichi@pl.net LOCAL SERVICES *St.John Ambulance 111 or Freephone 0800 61 0066 *Fire phone 111 WHAT’S ON PLEASE ~ do let us know what is on - email *Police phone 111 or 09 4311150 kaiwakabugle@kaiwaka.co.nz Advertising in WHAT’S ON is FREE A A: Meets Wed., 8pm Kaiwaka Ph: 4312228, 4315543, 0800229 6757 *3Apr~Good Friday AL ANON: In recess, contact Ph: 4312228 MINISTRY FOR PRIMARY INDUSTRIES - General inquiries Call Free 0800 008 333 ASUREQUALITY LTD (was AgriQuality) Call Free 0508 0011 22 BUDGETING SERVICE, OTAMATEA:Free confidential advice & support - all areas of personal finance Ph: 09 4318173 or 094318117 CAB-Citizens Advice Bureau.Wellsford Ph: 4237333 0800 367 222 email:cab.wells@xtra.co.nz DOG/STOCK /NOISE CONTROL 0800 105 890 *3Apr~'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies', 7:30pm KWMH *4Apr~Te Pounga Marae Wharekai opening 10am *5Apr~Easter Sunday *5Apr~DAYLIGHT SAVING ENDS - clocks back 1 hour *9Apr~The Jews Brothers Band, ORT 7:30pm *11Apr~Charity Boot Camp, KSA *11Apr~Kaiwaka Fire Brigade awards, 7:30pm KWMH *11-12Apr~Pt Curtis Fishing Competition *12Apr~Hakaru RSA working bee - tidy up rooms, etc *16Apr~KSA Sports Awards, KSA 6:30pm *17Apr~'The Theory of Everything', 7:30pm KWMH KATE’S PLACE with Govt.Day Agencies/Community Information / Osteopathy/ IRD / Probation, etc Ph: 4312661 Hours: 9am-3pm.
