ST. THOMAS OF MOUNT MALEON • Tuesday, July 7 He was a renowned general, known for his great size and courage, his many victories against barbarian enemies, and his considerable wealth. But, forsaking wealth and reputation to follow Christ, he retired to the desert to live in asceticism. The Prophet Elias appeared to him and, accompanied by a pillar of fire, led him to Mount Maleon, near the Holy Mountain. There he lived in solitude, giving his days and nights to prayer. Like so many who seek to hide their holiness from the ..world, he was discovered, and people began to come to him for healing of their ailments and those of their loved ones. FRONT DOOR GREETER The saint healed countless ailments, drove out demons, cured Mystery Person #1 the blind, and made water to pour forth from barren earth. In EPISTLE READER prayer he appeared as a pillar of fire. He reposed in peace in th Mystery Person #2 the 10 century, and his relics continued to be a powerful source of healing. And proudly broke the news to the Disciples, saying: Death hath been spoiled; Christ God is risen, granting the world Great Mercy. Troparion for St. Athanasius the Athonite • in Tone 3 The Angels’ ranks were awed by thy life in the flesh, how, though corporeal, and clad with earthly clay, thou didst set forth with courage to invisible wars and wrestlings and didst boldly smite the hordes of the demons with mortal wounds. Wherefore, Christ rewarded thee with abundant gifts in return. Entreat Him that our souls find salvation, O most renowned Father Athanasius. Troparion for St. Ignatius of Antioch By choosing the Apostles’ way of life, you succeeded to their throne. Inspired by God you found the way to divine contemplation through the practice of virtue. After teaching the word of truth without error, you defended the Faith to the very shedding of your blood. O holy martyr among bishops, Ignatius, entreat the Lord our God to save our souls. Kontakion for Ordinary Sundays • in Tone 2 O protection of Christians who cannot be put to shame, mediation unto the Creator most constant: O despise not the suppliant voices of those who have sinned, but be thou quick, O good one, to come unto our aid, who in faith cry unto thee: Hasten to intercession, and speed thou to make supplication, thou who dost ever protect, O Theotokos, those who honor thee. The Epistle The saints shall boast in glory, and they shall rejoice upon their beds. Sing unto the Lord a new song; His praise is in the church of the saints. The Reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians (5:22--6:2) Brethren, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us have no self-conceit, no provocation of one another, no envy of one another. Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Look to yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. The Gospel The Reading is from the Holy Gospel According to St. Matthew (8:28--9:1) At that time, when Jesus came to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met Him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. And behold, they cried out, “What have we to do to Thee, O Son of God? Art Thou come here to torment us before the time?” Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged Him, “If Thou castest us out, send us away into the herd of swine.” And He said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their neighborhood. And getting into a boat He crossed over and came to His own city. Looking ahead. . . Saturday, August 22nd SAINT IGNATIUS MINISTRY LEADERSHIP PLANNING RETREAT for the Saint Ignatius Parish Council and all the Directors and Officers of Antiochian Women, Men of Saint Ignatius, SOYO, Church School, Church School Teachers, and Outreach. 1:3 0 pm ! ! ! PEACE IN CHRIST There is nothing better than peace in Christ, for it brings victory over all the evil spirits on earth and in the air. When peace dwells in a man’s heart it enables him to contemplate the grace of the Holy Spirit from within. He who dwells in peace collects spiritual gifts as it were with a scoop, and he sheds the light of knowledge on others. All our thoughts, all our desires, all our efforts, and all our actions should make us say constantly with the Church: “O Lord, give us peace!” When a man lives in peace, God reveals mysteries to him. —St. Seraphim of Sarov (1754-1833) THE LURKING DEMONS Although there are a slew of demons and all the air is packed with them, they cannot do anything to one who is protected by prayer and fasting. Fasting is universal temperance, prayer is universal communication with God; the former defends from the outside, whereas the latter from within directs a fiery weapon against the enemies. The demons can sense a faster and man of prayer from a distance, and they run far away from him so as avoid a painful blow. Is it feasible to think that where there is no fasting and prayer, there already is a demon? Yes, it is. The demons lodging in a person do not always reveal their presence, but lurk there, stealthily teaching their host every evil and turning him away from every good thing; so, this person is certain that he is doing everything on his own, but meanwhile he is only fulfilling the will of his enemy. Just commence prayer and fasting and the enemy will immediately depart—but will then wait on the side for an opportunity to somehow return again. And he truly will return, as soon as prayer and fasting are abandoned. —St. Theophan the Recluse (1815-1894) LIKE A WILD ASS The enemy will run like a wild ass from the person who has tasted the sweetness of prayer. —Elder Cleopas of Romania (1912-1998) 2 :3 0 pm 3 :3 0 pm 4:30 pm 5 :00 pm Prayer, Saint Ignatius Vision and Planning Ministry small group break out for goals & calendar planning.
