Aspley braves the elements for some live 96five fun
It takes more than torrential downpours to keep the Aspley
State School community away from a party—even at 6 o’clock
in the morning!
On Wednesday 1st April, who could blame us...when there
was so much fun to be had in the school hall. The 96five fm
school excursion provided entertainment including a giant
inflatable boxing ring; Brisbane Heat cricket skills stall; colouring-in, a coffee van and St John’s Ambulance first aid demonstrations.
There were live interviews with Principal Andrew Duncan,
incoming P&C President, Vicki Edwards; Chappy Lindsay
Kliendienst, as well as a number of our school leaders. The
highlight was the performance of “Can you hear the children
calling?” by the one hundred strong combined choirs in their
colourful sports shirts, led by Mrs Macca and accompanied by
Mrs Keren Ham.
The P&C bbq was a welcome respite from the inclement
weather, serving up breakfast rolls and cold drinks.
Mr Smith, Mr Duncan and Mrs Antoni with Clr Norm Wyndham meeting
breakfast show presenters Liam and Robbie; a packed hall of students and
parents during the morning.
WATCH OUT NEXT MONTH FOR:
The launch of our exclusive 2015 range of 125 merchandise.
Order forms will be available and orders will be taken during
Term 2 for delivery later in the year.

the first to enjoy the 96five giant inflatable boxing

Almost every McLeod
School’s past on display at Library
has an Aspley beginning
In 1933, Dulcie May Clarke, aged
10, moved to her third primary
school, Aspley State School.
Dulcie hadn’t had a great run of
luck at her other schools; it didn’t improve at Aspley! But it is
here that she made many friends
whom she remembers to this
day. Among them were Clarice
Mills, who enrolled at the school
in 1927. Their lasting friendship
was cemented when they married two brothers whom they
met at a dance.
The brothers were Eric “Parke”
McLeod and his brother Bob
from Aspley. Eric enrolled at
Aspley State in 1931, aged 5.

Both sisters remember Miss
Frawley (Ellen Frawley 1936-40)
with great affection.
After the Clarke sisters married,
Sadie’s daughter Denise attended
Aspley State for a couple of
years until Aspley East was built.
Dulcie and Eric’s daughters Beverley and Aileen attended between 1960-63 but by then the
family had moved to their current Strathpine home. Beverley’s
teachers at Aspley were Alison
Ballard (1960-62) and Ronald
Sawers (1958-64). Beverley was
among the last cohort to do
Grade 8 at the school.

Eric, now 89,

Team cooks up a storm at Bunnings
A big thanks to the 20 parents and teachers who volunteered their
time to help at the Aspley 125 fundraising bbq at Bunnings
Carseldine in March. Thanks to Donna Boaler, Kirsti and Chad
Leach, Julieanne and Wayne Gosney, Terry Pickard-Clarke, Lisa
Oliver, Dee Small, Shiree Dominguez, Carolynne Hassall, Elinor
Cox, Cindy Hill, Tanya Humann, Melissa Knight, Kristian O’Keeffe,
Rowan Alick, Rachel Pearson, Judith Whitehead, Michael Ross and
Murray Hooper.
We had great fun cooking 840 sausages, 15kg of onions while
disposing of 42 loaves of bread! We benefitted from a muggy
hot day and sold over 370 cold drinks! Thanks also to those
families who donated soft drinks for us to sell.
Thanks to our new sponsor Kleiger Textiles for helping us out with
the snappy 125 aprons and to Coles Aspley Hypermarket for their
support which funded most of the food costs.
Finally thanks to all the staff, students and their families who came
along to support us on the day by buying food and drinks!
The funds raised will help fund our Aspley 125 celebrations
throughout the year!

Commemorative Book
This is one for parents and families with
past associations with the school.
If you have wonderful memories of past
school days that we could include in our
commemorative book, please send them to
us. We'd love to know more about the
Sydney Trip, winning or losing Tournament
of the Minds, playing in the fife band, what
you were asked to think about under the
Thinking Tree, or perhaps sneaking a swim
in Pie's Dam!
You can either send stories directly to us at
Reunion125@aspleyss.eq.edu.au or if you
would prefer to talk to someone, email
who you are and the years you attended
and your contact details. Or phone the
school on 3863 9111 and leave your contact details and a member of the team will
be in touch. Even if you don't want to be
published, we'd love to fill in parts of the
school's history.
And of course, our team can help with the
boring stuff like facts and dates if those are
a bit hazy.
