
Vera Visevic: “Understanding the Cemeteries & Crematoria Act 2013”. Back by popular
demand. Vera spoke and led discussion at the November 2014 Albury Conference on the
interpretation of the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2013. This follow-up presentation will
assist members in their understanding and interpretation of the Act.
Do you have a full and clear understanding of the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2013? Are
you confident that you are complying with the Act?
If your answer is not a loud definite YES, then you cannot afford to miss this presentation.
To enable Vera to style her presentation to meet your needs, what areas of the Act would you
like Vera to focus on? Do you have any specific questions or queries? If so, please submit your
questions, queries and focus points to mary.reid@afei.org.au by 20 March 2015 or earlier.
Vera is a partner at Mills Oakley Lawyers, specialising in not-for-profit law and property law.

number of CCA conferences.

Graham Evans: “Using a positive reporting culture to achieve legal compliance”.
Graham’s presentation will cover the risk for organisations of not moving to a workplace culture
where making reports of incidents, situations, observed events will leave them exposed to
prosecution and claims under a growing number of statutory provisions. These provisions
include:





Work health & safety issues
Bullying issues
Harassment and discrimination
Fraud and misconduct
Workers compensation.
Using a number of relevant case studies, Graham will provide an eye opening of this often
overlooked area and provide plenty of time for questions.
Graham, Legal Practitioner Director, AFEI Legal Pty Ltd, has practiced in the area of
employment for over 30 years and assisted thousands of employers over that time to deal with
the complexities of the Australian workplace relations system. His expertise has been
recognised by the Law Society of NSW who have conferred him status as an Accredited
Specialist in Employment and Industrial Law. Graham is also on the panel of accredited
workplace mediators with the Law Society of NSW, along with the NSW District Court.

Alistair Shaw: “Infection Control, Bearing the Responsibility”. Alistair’s presentation
will be based around infection control:



What is it?
What are our responsibilities to it?
How will the use of personal protective equipment and other strategies help us to avoid
cross contamination within the work place?
Having been an embalmer and Funeral Director for more than 30 years who is actively involved
in industry training, advice and technical support, Alistair is well qualified to discuss the
relevance of infection control within the modern day cemetery and crematorium setting. Alistair
is with Hyqual Australia, a family owned company manufacturing funeral supplies and
accessories for the Australian funeral industry.

Craig Lapsley: “Involvement of Cemeteries and Crematoria during a Pandemic”.
Craig Lapsley will speak on the involvement of a cemetery or crematoria during a pandemic
situation in Victoria.
Craig is the Victorian Emergency Management Commissioner (EMC). He is Victoria’s first EMC
with legislated control over all major emergencies in the State of Victoria.
Craig has enjoyed a career in the Australian emergency management sector for more than 30
years.
As Victoria’s first EMC, Craig believes the shift to an “all hazards, all emergencies” approach to
emergency management is the next logical step in ensuring a systematic and coordinated
approach before, during and after major emergencies.
It is also an opportunity for the alignment of strategy, planning and investment across multiple
agencies, to champion unified information systems, an organisational culture that supports
information sharing, and a sharp and deliberate focus on better decision making with the
community as a central partner in emergency management.
Thursday’s lunch is proudly sponsored by The Northern Sydney Institute, Part of TAFE NSW, one of
the 2015 Principal Sponsors.
Thursday will concluded with the Phoenix dinner at Candelori’s Ristorante, a dining destination for
foodies from the Western suburbs and beyond. The Candelori’s menu captures the simplicity and
honesty of authentic Italian cuisine.
Following the conclusion of presentations on Friday morning, delegates will be taken on a cemetery
coach tour to:

Kemps Creek Cemetery: The beautifully landscaped boutique cemetery located in the
scenic Kemps Creek area, serves all denominations in the community and provides affordable
burial and cremation options. Kemps Creek Cemetery offers a serene location with rolling
lawns and tranquil lake views surrounded by native bushland.
Kemps Creek Cemetery holds within its grounds the Sydney Natural Burial Park – Sydney’s first
eco-burial area that is attracting patrons from all areas of Sydney. Natural burial offers the
community a simple and sustainable resting place with minimal disturbance to the bushland
environment.
To ensure that the habitat is kept as natural as possible, there are no formal headstones or
monuments nor artificial wreaths or tributes. The field is minimally maintained to encourage
growth, protect trees and wildlife and avoids the use of horticultural chemicals to create a selfsustaining eco-system.
The natural beauty of the landscape is your lasting memorial. Graves are unmarked, but each
is mapped and surveyed using GPS technology to accurately record locations for future visits.
A central commemorative feature in sandstone at the entrance to the field records the names of
those interred and provides a place for reflection for families.
Kemps Creek Cemetery is managed by the Catholic Cemeteries and Crematoria Trust.

Liverpool Cemetery and Crematorium: The imposing new St Padre Pio Garden
Mausoleum, is anchored in the south east corner of Liverpool Cemetery, and the heart of the
Liverpool community.
The L-shaped design embraces a lovely landscaped burial lawn on the forecourt. The tall
vertical white panels will have bronze plaques attached depicting the Way of the Cross. The
panels lead from the buildings northern most point to an intimate chapel for services.
The chapel features a skylight over the cross that allows daylight to reflect on the curved
polished walls, whilst reminding us of Christ’s ascension to heaven. A bronze statue of St
Padre Pio, depicted with his bandaged hands raised to remind us of his stigmata, is located at
the building entrance.
Designed to set a new benchmark in above ground burial innovation, Catholic Cemeteries &
Crematoria and Ignite Architects have created this light filled, environmentally sustainable
building. This stylish garden mausoleum offers a range of beautifully appointed crypts,
including family vaults and a range of configurations to choose from on each level. The upper
levels are accessible by lift, pedestrian ramps and stairs. The crypt capellas provide views over
the cemetery, and the landscaped lawns create a beautiful setting.
Lunch is being held in the condolence lounges of the Liverpool Cemetery. Lunch is kindly
sponsored and supplied by CCA member and Major Sponsor, Celeste Catering. Their
conference lunches have become famous with the exceptional quality and international variety
of well presented cuisine. A lunch not to be missed!

Pinegrove Memorial Park: Please see attached flyer on Pinegrove Memorial Park.
The conference will conclude on Friday evening with the Arrow dinner at the Liverpool Catholic Club.
For a memorable finale you will be entertained by Brendan Mon Tanner, hilarious comedy magician.
He’ll fool you, shock you and amaze you. Brendan’s award winning comedy magic presentation is
one of the most unbelievable exciting and funniest shows you will ever see, you’ll never know what
he’ll do next.
The conference will give members the opportunity to gain industry specific information. It will give
you the chance to network with people who understand and identify with your issues and concerns.
Don’t miss it!

Pinegrove Memorial Park Tour
Entrance to the Crypts of Santo Padre

Pinegrove Memorial Park has
been serving the memorial needs
of families in Sydney’s Western
Suburbs and surrounds, since 1962
and is a place of treasured family
memories, cultural celebrations
and peaceful moments.
Set in the geographic and
demographic heart of Sydney,
Pinegrove Memorial Park was
originally designed to challenge
existing notions of what a cemetery
should look like, and it remains
true to this vision today. Pinegrove
boasts an open, airy and light-filled
ambience and, thanks to careful
forward-planning, is well placed to
continue to meet Sydney’s burial
and cremations needs for many
decades to come.
Pinegrove Memorial Park provides
two beautiful chapels, for the
hosting of funeral and memorial
services. It has burial and cremation
memorial options to suit a wide
selection of needs and budgets.
And because it is important for all
families to be able to memorialise
a loved one in keeping with
their religious or cultural origins,
Pinegrove Memorial Park has
dedicated sections within its
grounds, including Lung Po Shan
Chinese Memorial Gardens, the
Crypts of Santo Padre Pio, Pyong
Hwa Korean Memorial Gardens and
many other culturally appropriate
sections.
Pinegrove Memorial Park also
serves the community in many
ways, including by playing host to
important cultural activities such
as Anzac Day, Ching Ming, Chung
Yeung and All Soul’s Day.
