2015 AOTC Call for Artists

Call for Artists
Grand Junction, CO
Deadline: 3/19/15
BACKGROUND: Art on the Corner (AOTC) is a public sculpture program in Downtown Grand
Junction and one of the first of its kind in the country. AOTC consists of two parallel exhibitions:
1) A juried exhibition of 10-25 sculptures available for purchase on display for a full year starting
in early May along our award-winning Main Street; and 2) Our permanent collection of more
than 100 sculptures in a variety of mediums and styles displayed throughout the Downtown
area. Established in 1984 by local sculptor, Dave Davis, AOTC is the signature public art
program of Grand Junction, and has served as the model for similar programs in communities
across the country. Both the annual exhibition and the permanent collection are free and open
to the public. A self-guided brochure of the annual temporary exhibition is available each year.
MISSION: Art on the Corner is a signature place-making program of the Grand Junction
Downtown Development Authority, expanding opportunities for residents and visitors to
experience high quality works of art through the display and acquisition of sculpture throughout
the downtown Grand Junction area.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The AOTC committee is pleased to announce the 2015 temporary
exhibition open to all sculpture artists. The sculpture must be an original creation. Artists may
submit up to two works of art each year. All artwork must be for sale.
ARTWORK SELECTION CRITERIA:
1. Quality: The consideration of highest priority is the inherent artistic excellence of the
art. All art must be an original creation by the artist.
2. Timelessness: Each and every sculpture accepted into the Art on the Corner
temporary exhibit shall be considered for acquisition for the permanent collection and as such it
should have relevance aesthetically to the community in future years and reflect enduring
artistic quality.
3. Permanence: Sculpture shall have structural and surface soundness, be resistant to
theft, vandalism, and weathering, and require minimal maintenance.
4. Compatibility: Works of art should be compatible in style, scale, material, form, and
content with their surroundings, the downtown area, and Grand Junction, and have a broad
range of appeal to the general public.
5. Public Safety: Works of art shall not create inordinate safety problems or liability
concerns for the general public, the Downtown Development Authority, or the City of Grand
Junction.
DEADLINE: The deadline for receipt of proposals is 5pm, Thursday, March 19, 2015.
TIMELINE: Final selection of the 2015 temporary exhibit will be complete by March 27, 2015. All
artists will be notified at that time. Installation of the exhibit will take place on May 9, 2015, and
will remain in place for one year. Artists are required to deliver their artwork on the day of
installation. An artist’s reception will be held the evening of May 9, 2015 to celebrate the new
exhibit.
COMPENSATION: All artists who are accepted will receive a $500 stipend and hotel
accommodations for Friday, May 8, and Saturday, May 9, 2015.
