ABOUT SEDA
SEDA Group (SEDA) exists to engage, educate and empower young people as they transition from
school to employment or further study. The program was established in 2006 to meet the needs of
young people whose education preference is for an applied and context relevant learning experience.
SEDA engages students in their education by connecting their passion to a hands-on learning
environment. Students have the opportunity to complete their Year 11 and 12 and gain nationally
recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications through Registered Training
Organisations (RTOs).
SEDA works with the strengths of each young person to develop their self-confidence and self-worth
through positive learning experiences. SEDA provides all students with the opportunity to develop
key life skills, including organisation, independence and teamwork, which will see them prepared
for the real world.
The result is mature, resilient and capable young men and women who, on completing
their secondary education, are empowered with a range of pathway choices,
be it further study or employment.
Over 2000 students are currently completing their education with SEDA
in Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

Completing a Senior Secondary Certificate through the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning
(VCAL), is the cornerstone of the SEDA program. SEDA recognises that a Year 12 completion is
fundamental to a young person’s long term personal, social and career development.

MISSION:
SEDA exists to engage, educate
and empower young people.
All SEDA students also undertake VET Certificates which contribute to their Senior Secondary Certificate
and develop their industry specific credentials, allowing them to transition into work or further study.
With strong connection to industry, students develop initiative, communication, leadership, resilience
and critical thinking skills. This provides SEDA graduates with the opportunity to gain employment
across numerous industries.
In the final year of the program, students study a Diploma of Screen and Media. Students who
successfully complete their Diploma, have the opportunity to gain direct entry into one of a range
of courses offered by SEDA’s partner universities.

ARENA THEATRE COMPANY
SONG ROOM
Arena Theatre Company creates inspiring live
performances that have a genuine engagement
with young audiences aged five to 25 years.
Over the Company’s 45-year history, it has
sustained an international reputation for excellence
as a theatre maker driven by the complex range
of experiences encountered by young people
in today’s world. Arena productions are created
by professional artists and performers, involving
young people in the development stages of work
to ensure its authenticity.
The Song Room is a national not for profit
organisation that provides tailored, long-term
music and arts-based programs for children
in disadvantaged and high need communities.
With its office and rehearsal space based in
North Melbourne, the Company regularly performs
its work at local, national and international
venues and festivals. Arena Theatre Company is
supported by the Australian Government through
the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory
body Arts Victoria and the City of Melbourne.
The Song Room vision is that all Australian
children have the opportunity to participate
in music and the arts to enhance their education,
personal development and community involvement.
Programs are based on research and have been
demonstrated to improve educational and social
outcomes and to help schools sustain their own
music and arts programs.
The Song Rooms delivers its programs to around
250 schools and communities each year and
works with over 20,000 children every week.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
PERFORMANCE SKILLS
DANCE
This area of the program provides students with
an array of skills and techniques to enhance
performance and character. Students cover
a wide range of techniques and develop skills
in movement, dance, voice and acting.
This unit focuses on providing students with the
opportunity to explore the elements of dance
expressively using memory and imagination.
Students are encouraged to explore a range
of familiar movement ideas for dance and
share their dance ideas with others.
PRODUCTION
Students learn a variety of technical skills
including how to make audio plans and lighting
designs, how to operate audio and lighting
desks, how to assemble lighting and audio
equipment and how to plot cues to use in
rehearsal and performance.
COMMUNITY AND EVENTS
Through the program, students are involved in a
range of community activities, including arts and
dance projects, while simultaneously developing
the planning skills required to run and manage
events and productions.

CREATIVE WORKS
In creating live performance, students develop
their skills in scriptwriting and play making.
Working collaboratively on projects, students are
introduced to both production and performance
elements of the industry. Many of the creative
works will be made in conjunction with arts
organisations and community groups or for
educational purposes.
INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE
Industry knowledge covers a range of topics
including auditions and audition skills, resume
writing, use of social media as a promotional
tool, Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance
(MEAA) and industry research. Students gain
a broad knowledge of the industry and are
equipped with the skills to best prepare them
for a career in theatre and live events.

Students who have completed their studies with SEDA have created positive pathways
into further education, training and employment in a variety of industries.
SEDA’s commitment to providing pathway opportunities to students has seen the signing of multiple
partnership and articulation agreements with universities across Australia.

La Trobe University will offer 80 places into a Bachelor of Teaching at La Trobe
Bundoora and 60 places into a Bachelor of Education at La Trobe Bendigo
upon student’s successful completion of their Diploma. Positions will be offered
to students with a minimum 60% GPA or offered to the highest achieving students
if quota is exceeded.

partnership agreement in 2013. The ground breaking partnership guarantees

“At SEDA I learnt a lot about myself, as well as the
importance of having patience and motivation,
which has allowed me to reach my goals.”
Being confined to a traditional classroom environment
did not suit Radhika and SEDA provided the perfect
opportunity for her to complete her Year 12 in a way
that catered to her unique style of learning.
During her time at SEDA, some of the greatest
skills Radhika learnt were patience, will power,
determination and hope. SEDA gave her the
confidence to work through challenges, overcome
adversity and achieve her full potential.
Meeting a range of people within the arts
industry and working with different community
groups gave Radhika a better understanding of
theatre practice. Radhika is now completing a
Bachelor of Creative Arts at Deakin
University with the ambition of
one day owning her own
theatre company.
ELLE SABLOTNY, 2014
Bachelor of Communications
(Media) – RMIT
“SEDA gives you great insight into all
aspects of the entertainment industry and
teaches you how to put the right amount
of effort into achieving your dreams.”
SEDA provided an opportunity for Elle to develop her
skills in the subjects and areas of study she already enjoyed,
including drama and literature, as well as the chance to
surround herself with like-minded people.
Elle found SEDA was able to teach her how to work in a professional
environment as well as show her the importance of using initiative
in every situation. She found this beneficial in getting her skills
recognised by others in the industry and taking on new opportunities.
Highlights of SEDA included the work experience opportunities Elle
received and how these experiences improved her CV. Elle had the
opportunity to co-direct a theatre show which toured across Melbourne
and Alice Springs, work backstage on the State School Spectacular and
assist on music video shoots.
Following SEDA, Elle was accepted into a Bachelor of Communications
(Media) at RMIT. In future she hopes to work in the film industry as well
as perform her own music.
DHILLAN PUDDY, 2014
Bachelor of Arts (Music) – RMIT
“Being given the chance to be independent is really valuable
as a student and leaves you with a sense of achievement
when you start accomplishing your personal goals.”
Music and Drama classes were Dhillan’s main source of enjoyment at school
before coming to SEDA. The practical hands-on approach to learning in
the SEDA program provided an environment for Dhillan to remain
engaged in her work and continue with the subjects she loved full-time.
Through her internship with The Song Room in the marketing team,
as well her experience touring a Theatre in Education show, Dhillan
developed her confidence, independence and leadership, giving
her time to grow as a person and an artist.
Since graduating from SEDA, Dhillan has been accepted into
a Bachelor of Arts (Music) at RMIT University. She credits her
experiences at SEDA with her acceptance into the course,
as her hands-on experience was what higher education providers
were looking for in an application. Dhillan hopes to one day set
up her own record label, promoting young artists, as well as work
on her own music.
MITCH WHELAN, 2014
Bachelor of Arts Theatre –
Western Australia Academy
of Performing Arts (WAAPA)
“I’ve always been an organised person, however,
SEDA put that to the test and gave me the chance to
become self-driven and self-motivated. I’ve learned how
to communicate with professionals and the etiquettes and
behaviours expected from within the arts industry.”
The opportunity to pursue his love of acting and complete school
in an environment dedicated to the arts made Mitch’s decision to
move from Traralgon to Melbourne to join the Arts program easy.
The highlight of the program for Mitch was the opportunity
to develop and tour a Theatre-in-Education show around
Melbourne. This experience was made even better when the
class raised $2000 to tour the show in Alice Springs. It was
an incredible experience for Mitch and one of the projects
he is most proud of from his time at SEDA.
Mitch was accepted into the Western Australia Academy of
Performing Arts where he will be completing his Bachelor of
Arts Theatre. Following his studies, Mitch plans on moving
back to Melbourne and establishing himself as an artist with
the hope to own an amateur theatre company.

SEDA continually strives to provide positive results and outcomes for every student. The strong relationships
with the principals and staff of our host schools contribute significantly to the success of the program.

This training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding. Victorian Training
Guarantee Government Funding eligibility applies.
Teaching staff are qualified and experienced in areas including: physical education, arts, building and
trade, literacy, numeracy, welfare and career pathways. All teachers are registered with the relevant
teaching authority in their state.
Teaching staff come to the program with a wealth of experience from a variety of education sectors
and with the common desire to make a difference in the lives of young adults. Staff develop a close
professional relationship with their students and a sense of responsibility for their future.
SEDA provides the best possible learning environment for students. With access to support services,
SEDA provides an environment where students can develop life skills integral to their self-development.
The educational support team consists of wellbeing, pathways and literacy staff, who ensure SEDA
students are well supported throughout their time at SEDA.
PROGRAM CLASSROOMS
Program classrooms are located at community and arts hubs, providing students with
an applied learning environment immersed in industry.
Program classrooms are fully equipped with the infrastructure required for a classroom
setting, allowing students to complete theory-based learning as well as practical activities.
