Elimbah News & Views Monday 27 April 2015 Volume 2, Issue 2 Anzac Day Thank you to all the children, teachers, parents and other family members who took part in our Anzac commemorations last week. I was very proud to see so many of our young people participate with such decorum and respect and would like to thank and acknowledge the following: Mr Doc Watson, from the RSL, for reciting The Ode Andrew Powell MP and Councillor Adrian Raedel for their attendance and participation at our ANZAC Ceremony Well done to our School Captains, Jhett, Caitlyn, Kade and Zoe. A big thank you to our Prep wreath-layers Congratulations to Daniel for playing The Last Post so well during our ceremony – we are all very proud of you! Well done to school band and choir – they were exceptional Mr Williams and Mr Hill for preparing our students with their ELIMBAH STATE SCHOOL Ph: 5432 1333 email: the.principal@elimbahss.eq.edu.au INSIDE THIS ISSUE Deputy’s Desk Lines from the Library Focus on Learning P&C News Community Notices Classifieds DATES TO REMEMBER Mon 4 May performances Glasshouse District Touch Football Trials Mr Godfrey for organising such an important and well run Tues 12 - Thurs 14 May Anzac Assembly Naplan Mon 18 May About 70 Elimbah children and their parents marched on Saturday at Caboolture with school staff. Thank you to everyone for taking the time to support such an important occasion and to Michelle for the lovely Anzac biscuits enjoyed by all. NAPLAN Students in Years 3 and 5 will be participating in NAPLAN in Week 4 of this term. This has been scheduled for Tuesday 12, Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 May. Parents will receive their child’s NAPLAN reports in Semester 2. Glasshouse District Cross Country Tues 26 May Grandparents Day - Prep Wed 27 May Under 8’s Day National Simultaneous Storytime Have a great week Starring On Parade 5G FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK with Chris Godfrey A BIG thankyou to all who attended and took part in our Anzac Parade on Friday – especially the captains; Caitlyn, Jhett, Zoe and Kade. The previous day I was lucky to be able to take the School Captains to the Queensland school’s parade in Anzac Square, Brisbane. We laid a wreath at the Shine of Rememberance and listened to addresses from various dignitaries including the Queensland Premier and the Governor General. It was a moving experience to stand with around 4000 school children and listen to the Last Post echo around the square. Special thanks to Daniel Hosking for playing the Last Post at our school parade – I know he was nervous, but he did a great job playing such a moving piece. I think all our children were wonderful in the parade, especially the preppies making their first appearance! Talking of the preppies – much of our attention turns this term to the Early Years – where we are now making preparations for Under 8s day and Grandparents day. We will also be inviting Prep parents along to a presentation around Literacy - providing tips and support for using the Home Readers, explaining how the Bug Club works, and also giving a brief presentation on Oral language development in Early Childhood. Flyers and invitations will follow soon. Have a lovely week Have a lovely week Chris Lines from the library with Donna Pickering SUPER BEAR This week Super Bear is off to visit the year 1 students in 1H. The children were very respectful and listened carefully on their recent library visit. Well done 1H! NAPLAN This year, Year 3 and 5 students will be involved in NAPLAN testing from 12-14 May (Week 4 Term 2). NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. At the classroom level it is just one of a number of important tools used by teachers at Elimbah State School to measure student progress. Teachers are working to ensure students in Years 3 and 5 are familiar with the test formats and are providing appropriate support and guidance. If you have any questions about your child’s preparation for, or participation in NAPLAN, please make a time to speak with their teacher. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day. BUG CLUB PRIZE WINNER Congratulations to Travis in 1H for being this week’s Bug Club Prize Winner. Focus on Learning What has been happening in 5G? 1R The Language Detectives This term 5G have made a class goal of working towards neater handwriting and better bookwork. At the end of last term we all decided it was important to show that we have pride in our day-to-day written work. As a class, we are focussing on having sharp pencils, ruling lines, including the dates and taking our time when writing. Already we are seeing some fantastic bookwork! Another focus at the start of Term Two has been looking at the history surrounding the arrival of the First Fleet to Australia and the early colonisation of our country. We have discussed the differences between penal and free settlements and have investigated the emotions behind the arrival of these colonies through the short story “The Rabbits” by John Marsden and Shaun Tan. We are looking forward to sharing our Freeze Frame dramatization of this book on parade this Friday. This term the class will be focusing on the features of characters in stories. The detectives will be focusing on the actions (Verbs) the characters make in a story to infer a description (adjectives) for that character. The detectives will have to find the evidence in the text to prove why they gave that description for a certain character. P & C NEWS P&C Monthly Meeting 20 May 2015 at 6.30pm - (please note winter start time) New Faces & Ideas always Welcome! Did you know our weekly Brekky Club is run by school volunteers with donations from businesses in our local community? One such business is Bakers Delight in Morayfield Shopping Centre. Karra and Paul donate bread every week for toast for our students, which is greatly appreciated! If you shop with businesses who support our school, please let them know we appreciate their support! And whilst we are talking appreciation, I would like to thank the Blanchard family who collect the bread every week from Bakers Delight. It is a huge help to the Brekky Club volunteers to have this bread picked up and delivered to the school each week. Thanks Shelley and Daniel!! Another huge thanks needs to be given to Dallas McAllum and Kerry Delaney. Without these two ladies stepping up and coordinating the Mothers Day Stall this year, our children (and ultimately us!) would have missed out. I’m looking forward to hearing lots of lovely stories from our Mums and significant female role models about their gifts that the children have bought them! Thanks for your commitment Dallas and Kerry! We will be needing volunteers to be running the stall on the 6, 7 and possibly the 8 of May. If you are available for at least ½ an hour please let me know so I can pass along your details and availability to Dallas and Kerry. Many hearts make our school and I know we have many lovely volunteers who gladly give up a little of their time to help our school!! Thanking you all in advance! We still need a volunteer for our Fundraising Coordinators position. This role can be job shared between two people. If we do not get a Fundraising Coordinator, events like our Fathers Day stall, our Carols on the Oval, School Discos etc WILL NOT go ahead!! And the less fundraising we do throughout the year, the less money is available for resources for your children!! Did you know that the great Undercover Area where your children sit for Parade and Lunches was funded by your P & C?? Projects to benefit your children don’t happen without your help! Please contact Taroola if you would like some more information on what the role entails. Please forward your feed back to us, we can’t fix it if we don’t know it needs attentionpandc@elimbahss.eq.edu.au Have a great week! There are currently 30 Elimbah students who have made 10 or more deposits and are entitled to a Dollarmites Reward. Could one of them be you?
