How to Apply
1. Submit the following with application:
a) Official High School Transcript
All applicants are required to submit an official high school transcript. A high school diploma or equivalent is a
prerequisite. Applicants 21 years of age or older who do not have a high school diploma are considered on an
individual basis. Successful completion of Biology 30 and Chemistry 30 (or equivalents) or the Mount Royal Science
Preparatory Tutorial is strongly recommended.
b) Statement of Career Investigation
Complete the enclosed form, detailing:
 Why you are interested in a career in funeral service
 Why you feel you are well suited for funeral service
 To what extent you have researched the funeral service profession (cite sources)
 What experience you have had in funeral service
c) Professional References
Have two professional references complete the enclosed forms
d) Funeral-Related Experience
Complete the Mount Royal Introduction to Funeral Service course or submit 14-20 hours of documented work or
volunteer experience within a funeral home.
2. Include a non-refundable $100 application fee.
Provide credit card number or make cheque payable to Mount Royal University. Do not send cash through the mail.

Enrolment is limited. It is to your advantage to apply during the early admission period. Applicants who apply for early
admission will be considered within 4-6 weeks of their date of application. Applications may be accepted after the early
admission period, pending space availability. Visit the website for updates.
Practicum and Work Experience Requirements
Embalming Practicum and Work Experience Requirements
Completion and receipt required prior to starting in practicum and work experience:

Valid Red Cross - Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR level ‘C’ Certification

Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test

WHMIS - Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

Current Vaccinations for: Hepatitis B
Diphtheria/Tetanus Booster
Students must obtain at least two of the three series of the Hepatitis B vaccination and test negative on the 2-step
Tuberculin (TB) Skin Test. TB Skin Test Results and WHMIS training must have been completed within 12 months of
commencing in the embalming practice. WHMIS training can be completed at Mount Royal University; information
regarding this training will be available on the Funeral Student Resource Site.
Funeral Directing Practicum and Funeral Director Work Experience Requirements
Completion and receipt required prior to starting in practice and work experience:

Valid driver’s licence
A police record check and driver abstract may be required for employment purposes and securing a Funeral Directing
Practicum site. Although a criminal record may not affect graduation from the program, it may affect your ability to obtain
a funeral director or embalmer licence.
Licensing
These programs have been approved by the Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board for licensing purposes in the
Province of Alberta. Each province has its own licensing regulations governing the funeral service profession. Applicants
must contact the licensing agency for the province in which they intend to work to ensure that completion of this program
will meet the necessary licensing requirements.
