The Hollin Hall Village Citizen’s Association (HHVCA) is looking to form a traffic task force committee in order to identify traffic hot spots in our neighborhood that have people concerned and that need to be addressed with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). More specifically, this committee will be tasked to review the identified traffic hot spots and develop a prioritized, community-wide list of traffic improvements that can be submitted to VDOT for action. The desire is to present a thorough picture of Hollin Hall Village’s needs to VDOT and make sure the neighborhood is together on the priority of each. The committee should be comprised of a cross section of Hollin Hall Village residents. Lou Kobus motioned to approve the minutes of the last meeting. It was seconded by Don Durand. No speaker was scheduled for tonight. Committee Reports: Safety (Greg Kottemann): no report was given as Officer Kotteman was not present at the meeting. Budget (David Voorhees): There will be a big shortfall in the County budget this year; more cuts are needed this year. On March 2, 2010, a County Budget Q&A meeting will be held at Walt Whitman MS at 8pm (via Tom Griffin). There is a decrease in every line of the budget. Parks and libraries are facing another 15% cut after a 15% cut last year. The budget should be online February 23, 2010 – Fairfax County Budget Office. Drastic cuts to be made in schools—esp. in freshman sports and music. Let Dave Voorhees know: Are we willing to pay more real estate taxes this year to keep county services? …or, do you want fewer firemen and policemen & keep taxes low? Transportation (Cathe Voorhees): There was a discussion on US Route 1 which included Congressman Moran and MD Congressman Chris VanHolland. Together, both congressmen secured $300 million for road improvements to get two BRAC hospitals $150 million each. They are “gung ho” for widening Rte 1. The widening would be from Telegraph Road ideally to around Buckman Road (more likely from Telegraph to Mulligan Road). Potholes in Hollin Hall were discussed. VDOT needs to address the never-ending problem with trucks cutting around the median on Shenandoah Rd. Issue still with Wellington and Fort Hunt intersection; intersection of Wellington and Revere has a drainage problem; Wellington and Lafayette have bus stop issues. Planning and Zoning (Don Martin): No immediate items impacting Hollin Hall. Don discussed the demo or revamp of Roy Rogers on Route 1. No decisions were made on it. A “Smarter Growth” presentation was made to create an urban look to Rte 1—specifically the Penn Daw and Beacon Hill areas. Old Business 1) Cathe Voorhees did not meet with Sharon Bulova (Board of Supervisors Chair) regarding the “Hollin Knoll” signage issue. Cathe wrote an email and the sign was moved. We need to file a new complaint because the property is no longer under construction. A petition was circulated which will help secure a meeting with Sharon Bulova. Leo is to make a presentation about the issue, looking at the overall impact to the neighborhood. 2) Speed limit sign on Shenandoah Road was taken down and a bicycle sign was put up. Cars still continue to speed down Shenandoah especially coming off of Fort Hunt Road. Kendra discussed an idea to have a representative from VDOT attend an upcoming meeting, yet it was agreed that it would be best to give VDOT proposals on what needs to be done: a) Speeding on Shenandoah Road b) Fort Hunt Road and Wellington Road intersection c) Wellington and Lafayette bus stop d) Other traffic issues in Hollin Hall. New Business 2010 Budget (Mark Welch): Mark presented the 2010 budget along with the Budget for 2009 with the Actual 2009. The 2010 budget was approved (motion by Lou Kobus and seconded by Doreen Jagodnik). Social Committee: Money has been budgeted for neighborhood social events (Easter Egg Hunt, Oktoberfest, Halloween Parade, Fourth of July, tree lighting). We need volunteers to help with this committee. VDOT Approval: Matt Peterschmidt has requested that the donated trees from the Mount Vernon Estate be planted in Shenandoah’s median. He would provide the labor. We need VDOT’s approval and best to get it in writing. It was discussed to have a HHVCA Beautification Committee. Membership Drive: A committee is needed to increase membership. It was suggested to include stamped envelopes with the newsletter to assist people in sending in their membership dues. A sign-up sheet was put on the table. Website: Mark Welch is looking into getting a website instead of using the Yahoo Group. Doreen reminded us that Associate Memberships are listed in the bylaws. What do we want to do with it? Doreen Jagodnik motioned to adjourn the meeting. Stephanie Christie seconded the motion. A certified arborist is an experienced professional who has passed an industry-approved examination covering all aspects of tree care. Certified arborists must continue their education to maintain their certification, so they are more likely to be up to date on the latest arboricultural standards and techniques. Keep in mind that good arborists will only perform accepted arboricultural practices. For instance, topping trees is not an industry-accepted practice and you should be wary of any arborist who advertises such services.
