Either He will keep you from evil or He will give you invincible courage to endure it. Remain in peace; rid your imagination of whatever troubles you. ~St. Francis de Sales This week in part this column will be true to its name. How can I not comment about my “beloved” Green Bay Packers, whose colors just happen to be green and gold? I’ll be honest with you right now I am on cloud nine, as they say, after last Saturday’s game when the Packers in the midst of a snowstorm defeated the Seattle Seahawks. All of this may change by Monday depending on how things go Sunday night with the NFC Championship game in Green Bay against the New York Giants. Needless to say I am hoping the Packers prevail. Who would have thought we would even be here at the beginning of the season way back in early September? Admittedly, few people were expecting a great season for the Packers. They had a very young team and an aging quarterback, who many thought should have retired at the end of last year. In addition there was no running game. Yet they kept charging forward, finishing the season 13 and 3, much to everyone’s surprise. Bret Favre, the “aging” quarterback, had one of his best seasons, breaking all kinds of records. They seemed to develop somewhat of a running game after acquiring Ryan Grant from of all teams the New York Giants. Things went the Packers’ way. They were assured a bye week and were seeded second in the NFC after Dallas. They started last weekend with a 14 point deficit, having fumbled twice within minutes and allowing Seattle to gain an early lead. Then it started to snow, actually to snow hard, and the Packers never looked back, finishing that game 42-20. Unfortunately, having lost to Dallas and to the Chicago Bears in the second to last game of the season the Packers also seemingly lost the home field advantage to Dallas. That is until Dallas lost to the Giants this past Sunday in an almost unbelievable upset, which moved the championship game to Green Bay. Presumably this will be an advantage. The weather Sunday evening promises to be bitterly cold, in the single digits, on the “frozen tundra,” as the home of the Packers, Lambeau Field, is often called. The last NFC title game in Green Bay was on January 12, 1997 when they beat the Panthers and went to New Orleans for the Super Bowl where the Packers defeated the New England Patriots. Where all this will go Sunday starting at 6:30 P.M., time will tell. Regardless, it truly has been a great run. There is a spiritual message here, as you might have guessed I would find one. That message is we never know where things can go. The unexpected can lead to something tremendous. With God all things are possible. And no I am not suggesting that it is by God’s intervention that the Packers are where they are, although I joke that they are God’s team. On a closing note and as an example of the above, during the game and after the 5:00 P.M. Mass on Saturday I was called to the hospital. One of our parishioners, yet another stalwart of St. Mary’s, a great family man, a daily Communicant, an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, who frequently took Communion to the sick, someone who had been at Mass that morning and did a number of errands that day, was called home by God. Mr. Paul Guidry died that evening rather unexpectedly. We never know how things are going to go and so we try to be ready with God’s graces. I believe Paul was, may God rest his soul. I pray we all can be, whether the Packers win or lose. In Christ, Fr. BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL: LED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT Many of you have received Bishop Loverde’s letter requesting your financial support of the 2008 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal. Please consider making a generous pledge to this important annual campaign. BLA funds help to support diocesan offices and ministries that serve tens of thousands of people each year. All parishes benefit from services that are received from the Diocese of Arlington. From encouragement of vocations, to support of seminarians, to continuing education of priests, to training of catechists, the Appeal funs those things that parishes cannot do on their own. Please pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as you consider your annual pledge to the Bishop’s Lenten Appeal. Make a sacrificial gift in gratitude for the gifts that God has given to you. ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Our priceless treasure as Catholics is our belief in the actual living presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Christ could not have been plainer than when He told us to eat His Body and drink His Blood. What we may overlook is that our spiritual nourishment does not have to end with Holy Communion. Prayer in silence before the Blessed Sacrament is where God can speak to us. He can fill our hearts, strengthen our wills, teach us humility, and stay with us so we can grow in holiness. Think of spending just one hour per week with Our Lord. Sign-up sheets for a new session running from February through April are in the back of the Church. Adoration is on Thursdays from 12:30pm-7:30pm, concluding with a Holy Hour. Please call Mary Stier at 703.768.7167 for more information. CARPENTER’S SHELTER: On February 7th, we will be serving dinner to the residents. Sign up for food donations in the book at the back of the Church. CHRIST HOUSE DINNER: St. Mary’s will be serving dinner at Christ House on West Street on Tuesday, January 29th. If you can contribute food (listed in book at back of the Church) or help serve, please check book or call Janet Watkins at 703.836.1265 or Rita Meyer at 703.768.3482. Many thanks for all the help given in 2007! THE WEDDING MUSIC WORKSHOP FOR ENGAGED COUPLES will be held on Tuesday, January 22nd at 7:00pm in the Church.
