A Brief
History
of the
St. Paul
Art Crawl
by Andrew Gaylord
The artists who comprise the St. Paul Art Collective were living in
Lowertown buildings since the late 1960s. The Rossmor, the Finch,
262 and 300 Broadway were well known for housing artists even though
all of these buildings were not legal residences. Some of them did not
even have heat in the Winter.
The artists of Lowertown got organized in 1977, and they created
the St. Paul Art Collective (SPAC). SPAC became known early on for
creating site-specific art installations around St. Paul. Memorable
shows include the Union Depot in December 1977 and the Landmark
Center show In Situ in the Summer of 1979.
SPAC grew in the early 1980’s as more artists sought studios in
Lowertown. In 1982 the artists of SPAC held a town meeting at 300
Broadway (now Lowertown Commons) in which they asked the
questions: “What do we want?” and “What can we do to make it
happen?” Three answers emerged, and three committees took shape
that would individually lead to the first art gallery in Lowertown (The
Wall St. Gallery), the first Lowertown arts magazine (Vinyl), and the
first artist-owned residence in Lowertown (The Lowertown Lofts).
After the Lowertown Lofts opened in 1985, the St. Paul Lowertown
neighborhood grew rapidly and began to thrive as an arts district.
New apartment buildings opened in which artists could work and
live all year round. Although buildings in the neighborhood had been
holding open houses since the late 70’s, SPAC began to organize a
neighborhood-wide open house called The Art Crawl in 1991 that was
run by and for the artists. Today, nearly 25 years later, the Saint Paul
Art Crawl remains a grassroots event, organized and executed by
participating artists.
The first official Art Crawl poster was printed in 1992, and SPAC
sponsored the first Art Crawl Poster Contest in 1993. In the mid-aughts,
the Art Crawl expanded to include venues in the Midway, Grand Hill,
Eastside and West side neighborhoods of St. Paul. The Crawl has
grown and increased in popularity, now regularly attracting more
than 300 participating artists and 20,000 guests over the course of
one weekend.
The Saint Paul Art Crawl has contributed significantly to the quality and
culture of St. Paul and Minneapolis, and it was the first recipient of the
Mayoral Arts, Culture and Entertainment (ACE) Award in 2005.
Andrew Gaylord is the playwright and director for PlaceBase Productions.
Since 2008 he has directed 20 one-act plays and four Shakespeare plays with
high school students, and he has written and directed four plays with PlaceBase
productions. Andrew resides in a live-work studio in Lowertown and volunteers
on the Art Crawl PR Committee.

What Would You
Like to See in Lowertown?
business, entertainment venues and art spaces
in the neighborhood.
Late last year the Saint Paul Art Collective
(SPAC) received a Community Innovation Grant
from the Bush Foundation. The purpose of this
grant was to complete a study of the feasibility
of creating an Arts Center in Lowertown and
determine the level of interest and requirements
for establishing a formal Arts District Designation for the Lowertown neighborhood.
In the next phase of our study, we will be diving
deeper into this “Hub and Spokes” art center
model. The task will be to determine whether
this model would indeed be the best fit and
if so, what services would be most useful to
artists and the greater community whether it
be classes, artist work space or more open
exhibitions. We have put together an online
survey to help answer some of these questions
and we would like you to take it and give us
your thoughts on what you would like to see in
Lowertown. We also need your help by spreading this message as far and wide as possible to
others that have an interest in the future of the
arts in Lowertown. To access the survey go to
www.stpaulartcollective.org.
We have been actively collecting feedback from
the Lowertown community through a series of
open stakeholder meetings with Lowertown
residents, artists, business owners, and civic
leaders. The most compelling theme to emerge
from the discussions was the need for the
centralization of arts information, and a way
for artists and local businesses to collaborate
in the promotion of Lowertown as a cultural
destination. Many envisioned a physical center
which would be a flexible, mixed use, artcentric gathering space that would also direct
visitors to the wide variety of currently existing
If you have any questions, or would like further

Lowertown First Fridays are like an Art Crawl year round
If you enjoy coming to Lowertown in the spring and fall for our Art Crawls,
we want to remind you that we have smaller version of the Art Crawl on
the first Friday of each month. This event is centered in Lowertown and
is held from 6 to 9 pm. It is a great chance for you to visit a variety of studios and galleries and
have a chance to talk with the artists, as well as have dinner or drinks at one of the neighborhood’s
fine establishments.
You can check each month for the current events on www.facebook.com/LowertownFirstFriday

We would like to give special thanks lo three members who left the Board
this year. Jennifer Bisch served as our treasurer on our Executive
Committee. She is the owner of Artist Mercantile, a wonderful store that
supports local artists. Pratik Singh works at Macalester College and plays
in the bands Yeti Steady and Sitar Tabla. Pratik continues to be active with
the PR & Marketing Committee creating videos for our social media sites.
Roger Nielson, owner of Master Framers, was a Board member twice,
once for two years in the early SO's and most recently for the last four
years. He has made tremendous contributions to the lowertown
community. Roger will tum 75 in March and has decided to take a

Volunteer Showcase
Reynen, Winna organized the St. Paul Saints
baseball competition, hailed by many as the
showcase event of the Spring 2014 Crawl. She
also recruited students from Creative Art High
School to lead the kick-off parade last Spring.
You may have seen Winna in one of the city’s
YouTube videos promoting the Art Crawl. Is
there anything this amazing volunteer can’t do?!
Winna is a fabric artist who will be showcasing
her work in the lobby of the Lowertown Loft
Apartments this weekend. Be sure to stop by
and thank her for all her hard work!
Linda Snouffer
Linda has been volunteering as part of the
Catalog Team since 2013. This fall she also
volunteered to head the new Guest Artist
Liaison program, finding a place for those
artists who don’t have their own studio space
to exhibit their work during the Crawl. Linda
loves volunteering with the Art Crawl because
she can really see the impact her work has,
with each successive Crawl being a bit better
than the last. Linda will be showing her work in
suite #206 at the Northern Warehouse building.
Drop by to see her botanical prints and show
your appreciation for her service.
Winna Bernard
Winna has been serving on the Public Relations
and Events committees for the past two years.
She is responsible for starting the wildly popular
Art Crawl Passport program and rounding up
more than 30 suitcases to serve as drop-off
points for the game. She also spearheaded the
addition of the Union Depot as a participating
venue in 2013 and coordinated the funding and
printing for the big Union Depot-sponsored
Art Crawl maps. Last Spring, along with Tom

Diane Michele May
Diane Michele May has been studying, painting, and displaying art in her
community since she was 10-years-old. She earned a Bachelor of Science
in Fine Art from Harding University in 1992 and continued her education by
taking classes at the Atelier School in Minneapolis. She now teaches private
art lessons and can be found creating art both Plein Air and in her home studio
in the Dayton’s Bluff neighborhood. Her work can be seen in both private
collections and displayed in East Side St. Paul businesses. She also currently
has a solo exhibition going on at the East Side Area Arts Council and Gallery
on Payne Avenue.
Laurel O’Gorman
Laurel O’Gorman received her MFA from the University of Minnesota. Her early
work at the MMAA, and her curatorial/director experience at the University of St.
Catherine led her to 15 years of work with a corporate art exhibition program. In
turn, this opened up her world to graphic design, publication of art books and catalogues, and greater curatorial skills as an art consultant for a private collection.
Currently, she lives in Roseville, Minnesota, and is happy to spend time in her
studio working in a variety of media. Her recent work in watercolour emerged from
a lingering focus on studies into nature and the inspiration from daily Tao readings.
Laurel is currently showing at the University of St. Thomas in the exhibition
Disruption and Resolution: War, Art and Peace.
