All we want for
Christmas
We’ve all been really good boys and girls at the Children’s Hospital
for Wales this year, so we’ve made a wish list of presents we’d like
this Christmas.
We love playing because it’s fun and helps us forget that we’re sick,
so please may we have some toys, games and DVD’s in our Christmas
stocking for the playrooms and the therapy rooms.
Also all the doctors and nurses have looked after us really well so we’d
like to add a present to the wish list for them; they would really like
a children’s hydrotherapy pool so that the 500 children a year who
miss out now can have treatment to help them get better.
Donating is really easy, visit www.noahs-ark-appeal.org , text HOHO11
£5 to 70070 or call 029 2033 5016.
Merry Christmas!
Lots of love, all the boys and girls at the

Barry Sets
Sail For
Beca’s
Tribute
Fund
Barry Chamblain is three
months into his sail around
the world and aims to raise as
much money as possible for his
wife’s tribute fund held with the
Noah’s Ark Appeal. We spoke
to Barry before he left and this
is his story:
“Sailing has been one of my
passions since I was a child, and
like many who harbour dreams,
one of mine was to take on a
real challenge under sail. When
I first met my late wife in 2007,
half way up the Atlas Mountains
in Morocco; it soon became
apparent that “challenges” was
one of the many passions we
shared. Beca regularly engaged
in physical activity, from cycling
to running and sought regular
opportunities to raise money
for charities. She also enjoyed
sailing, and still holds the top
speed ever set on my sailing
boat.
Issue 26, Autumn 2011
Now, I am realising my
dream - in difficult personal
circumstances, but I know Beca
would be supportive. Like her, I
want to maximise the potential
of racing under sail, this time
around the world, and add
to the £20,000 that has been
raised, in her memory, for the
Noah’s Ark Appeal.
The Clipper Round the World
Yacht Race was conceived by
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston to
give individuals from all walks
of life and a wide variety of
backgrounds, the opportunity
to experience the challenge
of ocean racing, and embark
on the adventure of a lifetime.
What an experience!!! We will
be members of a unique group,
smaller in number than those
who have climbed Everest!
Setting off from the Solent on
July 31st, we will sail and race
over 40,000 miles. If all goes
well, I’ll be back in the Solent on
22nd July 2012. The Noah’s Ark
Appeal will benefit financially,
and my passion will have been
fulfilled – for now!
My ambition now is to complete
the challenge and in doing so,
swell her tribute fund to enable
the Noah’s Ark Appeal to
continue its challenging work
in support of the Children’s
Hospital of Wales.”
Over the years, Tribute
Funds created in memory
of loved ones have proved
vital to our work towards
a world-class Children’s
Hospital for Wales.

Hari undertook

resulting in an inability to crawl or walk.
As part of his treatment, Hari had a course
of hydrotherapy in his local hospital, where
the staff worked hard to build his muscle
strength and core stability in a series of
sessions in the pool. Hari took his first steps
just a few days after his second Birthday.
Mum Ceri admitted she ‘shed a tear’ when
he took those steps and describes the past

Hari’s big brother Dylan supported Hari through

Carys
makes a Splash
Carys Thomas a 12 year-old from
Newpor t, Pembrokeshire, has
made a big splash in the open sea
swimming world in aid of the Noah’s
Ark Appeal. The young star set
herself the challenge to swim ‘cwm
to cwm’.
She completed the 2.5mile swim
from Cwm Newpor t to Cwm yr
Eglwys in August. Carys said; “It
star ted as a personal challenge”
however after reading about the
Splish Splash Splosh campaign
she decided to seek sponsorship;
“I chose the Noah’s Ark Appeal
because it’s impor tant that the
children get what they need.” Carys
has raised more than £2,000 so far
towards the hydrotherapy pool –
what a superstar!
Challenging Channel
As we told you in the last issue, Geraint
from Llanishen, Cardiff aimed to swim from
Penarth to Western Super-Mare as part of
our Splish Splash Splosh. On Wednesday
24th August despite bad weather conditions
Geraint set off on his challenge; he faced his
ultimate fear by trying to swim the open
water but fierce tides meant he missed
his final destination – and ended
up swimming further than he
planned!

to turn back.”
Geraint still raised a fantastic £500 and has
vowed to give the swim another go next
year. He said; “I’ve decided to learn from
this year and I will definitely do it again next
year!”
Geraint’s family were there to
cheer him on from the boat which
was kindly donated by Phat Cat
Charters. Geraint said: “My family
gave me brilliant support. They
could see that the tide had taken
me a long way off course and were
trying to get me back into the
boat. There was no way I wasn’t
finishing the swim. Although when

An Eventful Summer
This summer the Noah’s
Ark Appeal had a fantastic
time at the Glanusk Estate
in Crickhowell.The Estate
is owned and run by the
Legge-Bourke family who
chose the Noah’s Ark
Appeal as their Charity of
the Year for 2011.
When Serena Legge-Bourke
was born in 2008, she had
a condition that affects 1 in
20,000 new born babies called
laryngomalacia. In Serena’s
case it was severe, affecting her
eating and breathing; leading
12
to her being tube fed for eight
months and undergoing three
major operations. It is thanks
to the doctors, nurses and
consultants at the Children’s
Hospital for Wales, that she is
a happy and healthy three year
old today.
At the Glanusk International
Horse Trials and Country Fair
Serena’s mother, Iona got back
in the saddle after 25 years
to undertake a challenge for
the Noah’s Ark Appeal. On
the final day of this event Iona
competed against experienced
professionals in dressage, cross
country and show jumping.
Charlotte Church, Max Boyce
and the Aber Valley male voice
choir joined us at the Glanusk
International Polo match
between Wales and Ireland another fantastic event on the
summer calendar.
Finishing the season with a stall
at Greenman festival we are
pleased to say that thousands
of pounds have been raised for
the Noah’s Ark Appeal from
the tremendous support from
the Glanusk Estate.

Sparkles Again
The 5th Annual Royal Ascot Ladies Day
Lunch was held at Chepstow Racecourse in
June and was once again organised brilliantly
by Noah’s Ark Appeal Vice-Chairman Eddie
Hayward and his Family.
The luncheon has become a favourite in
the Noah’s Ark Appeal’s events calendar.
This year’s event raised an amazing £26,230
towards the Splish Splash Splosh campaign
to fund a hydrotherapy pool at the
Children’s Hospital for Wales - no wonder
it’s become a Champion event!

Llanidloes Walks
Hole in One
Noah’s Ark Appeal Trustee Robert

A group of six have completed a walk from
Llanidloes to Aberystwyth for the Noah’s
Ark Appeal. Robbie Bebb, Julian King, Amanda

Gearing up the funds
Robert, who held an Institute of
Directors Golf Day at the Vale Hotel
and Resort, raised £750, and Lindsay,
who held a corporate golf day at the
Llanishen Golf Club, and raised £1000.
Lindsay and Robert tell us everyone had

The Krispy Kreme Devils!
More than 50 bikers took part in a charity
motorbike ride on Sunday 21st August.
Starting at Pontypool the bikers headed
towards Tintern, before riding onto Symonds
Yat. The event raised £90 for the Noah’s
Ark Appeal and Phase Two of the Children’s
Hospital for Wales. A big thank you goes to
Mike Hughes who organised the event.
14
This summer the popular Krispy Kreme store in
Cardiff ’s St David’s shopping centre held a family
fun day with the help of Cardiff Devils player,
Brett Hemingway.
The Devils set up an inflatable shooting cage in
the City Centre, and passersby were given the
opportunity to show off their skills under Brett’s
expert guidance.
The Noah’s Ark Appeal would
like to thank Claire from Krispy
Kreme, and Brett for all
their help, a goal-worthy
£175 was raised –
along with some
delicious
