TREASURES FROM
OUR TRADITION
DIOCESAN YOUTH MINISTRY
FORMATION PROGRAM
The confessional is a familiar setting in literature and drama.
Everyone from Doestoevsky and Shakespeare down to
Seinfeld has used the sacrament to tragic or comic effect or to
reveal aspects of character otherwise hidden. All of this
theater, from world classics to slapstick, has had a numbing
effect on our own expectations, and has skewed how the
culture looks at us and our struggle with sin and forgiveness,
hope and healing. Yet the artists are on to something. The
reconciliation chapel is a place where hearts are laid bare,
where honesty is the watchword, and people confess their
deepest needs. It is also a place of rebirth, or at least
realignment. It is, like the baptismal font, a place where
something dies, and where something else is born. Today,
although literature has barely caught up, the place is usually
not the dark and gloomy cabinet of old; rather it is a chapel
that speaks of peace, serenity, and the comfort of a welcome
home. People in one parish were astonished recently to see
their children skipping with delight as they left the place of
their first confession. We have to wait a bit for world
literature to catch up with this reality, but at least we can
experience the joy of penance, the thrill of a new beginning,
the assurance of God’s love.
Designed for adults already ministering or interested in
ministering in their parish with young people. The program
consists of four Saturday sessions and one twilight retreat.
You can attend one or all sessions. Topics include Pastoral
Care of Youth, Service and Justice, Prayer with Young
Catholics, and Evangelization of Youth. Sessions run from
September through January. For more information contact
Rudy Gomez at 609-406-7440.

SECOND COLLECTION
OCTOBER 18th and 19th
The Society for the Propagation of the Faith is the Holy
Father’s chief outreach to more than 1,150 mission dioceses
across the globe that depend on annual help, and the prayers
of all of us. These mission churches provide a spiritual home
for the poorest and most vulnerable, sanctifying them with the
Sacraments, as they offer them the Lord’s hope and peace.
The parish that is in strong relationship with the Society for
the Propagation of the Faith, through this World Mission
Sunday celebration, connects with the loving work of
missionaries of every time and every place. That parish lives,
as Pope Francis writes in his message for World Mission
Sunday, “grounded in love for Jesus and concern for the
needs of others.” Thank you for your support of this annual
collection.

SACRED HEART HEALING MASS
Are you struggling with challenging life circumstances? Are
you taking care of a loved one who is sick? Are you battling
addiction? Do you have a surgery coming up or a biopsy? Are
you feeling depressed or sad? If you answered yes to any of
these questions you will benefit from our healing mass. We
all need physical, mental and spiritual healing especially as
we grow older and you can find it Saturday, October 25th,
8:30 AM Mass. Light refreshments will follow in the parish
hall. Please come and bring a friend or family member.
IS GOD CALLING YOU?
Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men who
are discerning the possibility that God may be calling them to
a life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to
explore a priestly vocation with other like-minded men
through prayer and sharing vocation stores and experiences.
The group meetings are not meant to convince anyone that the
priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist you in
discovering if the priesthood is your true vocation and build
your relationship with Christ along the way. If you are a
faithful, single, Roman Catholic man, between the ages of 18
and 40, and are asking yourself whether God is calling you to
be a priest, you are cordially invited to attend this month’s
discernment meeting on October 26th, from 4-6PM at St.
Gregory, the Great Parish, Hamilton Square, NJ. Join Rev.
Michael McClane and Rev. Tom Vala, as they share their
experiences of the priesthood, followed by a prayer and
concluding with a great meal and conversation. Please register
with the Diocese of Trenton Vocations Office at
vocations@dioceseoftrenton,org or by calling 609-406-7449.
Join us at this exciting time as you discover and respond to
His invitation?
FAITH TO MOVE MOUNTAINS
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
In partnership with the Diocese of Trenton, we are now embarking on a bold new journey to make long held dreams a
reality at Sacred Heart. This campaign strives to address current and future parish and diocesan needs, providing the
strong financial foundation necessary to expand our ministries
and advance our mission. The Diocese of Trenton was built
on the sacrifices and dedication of those who came before us.
Now it is our turn to make an investment in the future of the
Catholic Church in our community. May the Holy Spirit
guide and direct our efforts as we begin this historic journey
together. Please join me in praying for our success throughout
the Faith to Move Mountains Capital Campaign.
SACRED HEART ALTAR ROSARY
AND HOLY NAME SOCIETY
MONTHLY MEETINGS
Tuesday, October 21st. The Rosary will be recited at 7:10PM
with Mass immediately following. We expect to induct ten
new rosarians at the mass. It is always a lovely spiritual ceremony. Administrative meetings for both groups will follow in
the Hall. Refreshments will be served. All men and women of
the parish are welcome to attend.
DISCOVER THE JOY OF BEING A
HOSPICE VOLUNTEER
If you have a warm heart, a listening ear, and the gift of compassion you can make a difference in the life of a hospice
patient, or family member. Visiting Nurse Association Health
Group Hospice is providing training for all individuals interested in becoming hospice volunteers in several counties
throughout NJ on 3 consecutive Tuesdays, October 14th, 21st,
and 28th, from 9:30AM—2PM at Geraldine Thompson Care
Center, Allenwood, NJ. There are many rewards and opportunities available to hospice volunteers through home visitation,
administrative support and special projects to support our
mission of caring and compassion. If interested call Pauline
DePalma at 732-224-6933.
THANK YOU
A BIG THANK YOU to all parishioners who bought mums at
the Rosary Altar Society’s weekend sale. Proceeds from the
sale go the various local charities that we support and will
help fund the Mother Theresa Scholarship that our organization awards. Many thanks again for your generosity! Also a
special thank you to all rosarians who planned, purchased and
sold 200 mums. Your hard work and dedication are very
much appreciated.
OCTOBER 12th,
TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
COME TO THE FEAST—”On this mountain, The Lord of
hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice
wines” (Isaiah 25:6). That’s what Isaiah tells us today. God is
putting together a huge party for “all peoples” to “wipe away
the tears from every face” (Isaiah 25:8). And what does Jesus
tell us? The reign of God, he says, “may be likened to a king
who gave a wedding feast for his son” (Matthew 22:2). When
the guests didn’t come, the king had his servants go out “into
the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you
find” (Matthew 22:9). We are called to deliver that invitation.
One of the themes woven into today's liturgy is that of divine
generosity. Asleep to reality, people often think they have
“earned” what they have. In our better moments, though, we
know that all our gifts-even the spiritual gifts-come from God’s
generosity. Our vocation is to invite people, to remind them the
tickets aren’t for sale. We can only show up and say thank you.
REPENTANCE
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading—On this mountain the LORD will make for all
peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines.
(Isaiah 25:6-10a).
Second Reading—God will supply whatever you need
(Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20).
Gospel-I have prepared my banquet, and everything is ready.
Come to the feast! (Matthew 22:1-14).
