OPEN POSITION WITH TALLER SAN JOSE Position Title: Medical Assistant Instructor Description of Organization: Taller San Jose (St. Joseph’s Workshop) is a highly focused, goaloriented program that targets young adults, ages 18-28, who are caught in a cycle of crime and poverty and need marketable job skills in order to become productive self-reliant adults. TSJ focuses on young people who have dropped out of high school, have been incarcerated or are on probation, and have a background of gang involvement. Since 1995, Taller San Jose has helped over 4,000 young people to restructure their lives, finish their education and develop marketable job skills. Position Summary: The instructor of medical assisting is a key staff member with the responsibility of presenting daily instruction of a provided program curriculum. He or she works closely with the Program Manager to meet established program objectives related to: student behavior, achievement, technical ability, and evaluation methods. As an instructor, this individual is responsible for the educational quality of the student trainee’s experience, while also playing a role in making sure the program runs smoothly. The instructor also serves as a liaison to support services. Excellent presentation, training, and facilitation skills A flexible, energetic, positive team player with commitment to providing high-quality instruction Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to relate to a culturally diverse population Excellent written and verbal communication skills Commitment to program excellence Dimensions of the position include: 1) Teach medical assisting skills as established in the curriculum 2) Have the ability to teach job readiness and business skills topics including résumé writing, interviewing skills, communication, customer service, and responsibility as the need arises 3) Have the ability to teach basic computer skills as they relate to a variety of workplace settings 4) Design and implement daily lesson plans to meet core course objectives 5) Lead group discussions and skill-building workshops with student trainees 6) Administer skills assessment tests at regular intervals to assess student trainee progress 7) Assist in planning and coordinating guest speakers and field trips 8) Create energetic and vibrant learning environment 9) Ensure high quality of classroom work 10) Serve as a professional role model 11) Administer both pre- and post-tests; documenting students’ abilities and progress 12) Prepare and distribute instructional materials for the classroom 13) Manage the classroom effectively to maximize student trainee learning 14) Communicate with Taller San Jose career advisors, case managers, counselors, etc. regarding apparent barriers to student trainee’s success 15) Refer student trainee to other Taller San Jose services to assist clients in eliminating barriers to success Revised 04/15/2011 16) Provide all required information for weekly/monthly/quarterly/annual reports 17) Maintain daily student attendance records 18) Prepare reports on student trainee’ attendance and progress 19) Assist with graduation arrangements and ceremony 20) Assist with outreach efforts as needed 21) Perform other duties as assigned Course-Specific Skills For an instructor of the Administrative Medical Assisting course, proficiency in the following clinical skills: 1) Creating the business letter 2) Complete knowledge and understanding of HIPAA 3) Creating, correcting, and updating a medical record 4) Creating a filing system for patient records 5) Handling emergency calls 6) Retrieving messages from an answering service 7) Creating an office schedule and scheduling appointments 8) Creating a reception area appropriate for children, elderly patients, and differently abled patients 9) Developing a patient education plan 10) Completing the CMS-1500 claim form 11) Medical Billing & Coding using updated versions of specific text book 12) Billing using a superbill (encounter form) 13) Organizing a bookkeeping system/ Manual peg board applications 14) Making a bank deposit 15) Reconciling a bank statement 16) Experience with Medisoft ® medical software For an instructor of Clinical Medical Assisting course; proficiency in the following clinical skills: 1) Aseptic hand washing technique 2) Using the autoclave to sterilize surgical instruments and supplies 3) Applying universal precautions and OSHA regulations 4) CLIA waived testing for POL settings 5) Disinfection of exam room surfaces 6) Creating a surgical field 7) Assisting the physician with minor surgical procedure 8) Responding to medical emergencies and basic first aid measures 9) Conducting a patient interview and obtaining a medical history 10) Writing progress notes in the medical record 11) Measuring vital signs of infants, children, and adults 12) Assisting the physician with basic and specialized exam 13) Performing vision screening 14) Teaching a patient to properly use a cane, walker, or crutches 15) Administration of topical, inhaled, and oral medications 16) Administration injected medications, including intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular routes 17) Blood collection techniques, including venipuncture (phlebotomy) and capillary puncture 18) Chain of custody policies and procedures in regards to specimen handling 19) Knowledge of collection tube order following NCCLS mandates 20) Processing and handling various specimens 21) Disposing of biohazardous waste 22) Obtaining an electrocardiogram Revised 04/15/2011 23) Ability to instruct basic math skills as well as drug dosage and calculations 24) Experience with electronic health records, experience with SpringCharts ® is optimum Position Qualifications: Minimum Educational Requirements: AA/AS required; BA/BS Preferred Certification as a Medical Assistant through NCCT or AAMA a plus; if not held must be willing and eligible to obtain Certified Post Secondary Instructor certificate a plus; if not held must be willing and eligible to obtain. American Heart BLS Certified Instructor a plus: if not held must be willing and eligible to obtain Current license holders for CMA, LVN or CPT-I-II must be current with no prior infractions Knowledge of computers – Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and internet Must have 3+ years billing experience and instructing billing experience. Skill and Experience Requirements: Experience delivering instruction using an interactive approach and/or multi-media technology Minimum of 5 years working in the healthcare field (CMA,CPT, LVN or health educator) Minimum of concurrent 1 year experience working with young adults Minimum of concurrent 1 year experience teaching clinical, administrative and billing in a vocational post secondary school setting with lesson plan and curriculum development. Experience with Medisoft medical software; Certified Medical Biller Preferred.
