Our Mission Statement
Holy Spirit is a community of believers that aspires to be
formed by the values of the Gospel and finds its strength in
coming together to celebrate Eucharist and to be transformed into the Body of Christ. As a Eucharistic People, we
who are being nourished must share the bread we have
with others, wash the feet of our brothers and sisters and
welcome all who come, as Christ Himself.

“Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee...” implores a
leader. Those assembled respond in chorus, “Holy Mary, Mother of
God, pray for us sinners...” These words may be heard at various
times of the day, any day of the week, as Holy Spirit parishioners
come together to pray the rosary, one of the most cherished prayers
of our Catholic Church.
The use of “prayer beads” and repeated recitation of prayers
to aid in meditation come from the earliest days of the Church, and
even has roots in pre-Christian times. Long strings of beads were
used in monasteries and nunneries, and even by lay persons, to keep
count of the numbers of prayers being said. According to some Catholic traditions, the rosary was given to St. Dominic in a vision of our
Blessed Mother in 1214; she requested recitation of the rosary as a
means of converting Albigensians and other sinners. By the 15th century the form of the rosary gradually evolved, and in the 16th century,
meditation on three sets of mysteries was added.
The rosary we use today begins with the Creed, the Our Father, three Hail Mary’s and the Glory Be, followed by five decades,
each consisting of an Our Father, 10 Hail Mary’s and a Glory Be. It
concludes with the Salve Regina (Hail Holy Queen).
Each decade of the rosary is accompanied by reflection on
one of the Mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful or Glorious. (The Luminous
Mysteries were introduced by St. John Paul II in 2002.) We focus on
events in the lives of Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother. We also
concentrate on the promises of Christ, God who humbly takes on human flesh to share in our humanity. The rosary helps us meditate and
come to appreciate more fully the birth, the suffering, the death and
the resurrection, and the miracles of His life while He was with us here
on earth.
Archbishop Fulton Sheen wrote, “The rosary is the book of the
blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the
world has even known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates
them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged whose eyes close upon
the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The
power of the rosary is beyond description.”
Oct. 7 is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Twenty-eighth Ordinary Sunday
October 12, 2014
SISTER M.
TERESA, FSGM
DIRECTOR of
School of
Religion
Who is invited to
the Kingdom?
“’The feast is ready, but
those who were invited were not
worthy to come. Go out, therefore,
into the main roads and invite to the
feast whomever you find.’ The
servants went out into the streets
and gathered all they found, bad and
good alike, and the hall was filled
with guests." (Matthew 22:8-10)
This Sunday’s Gospel
challenges us! We may think that
since we attend Mass and are
generally good people that our place
in Heaven is secured. This Gospel
passage turns that attitude upside
down. “Those who were invited were
not worthy to come.” Hopefully this
leads to a thorough examination of
our faith life…Am I just going
through the motions? Or am I
actively striving to be a disciple of
Jesus Christ?
“The servants went out into
the streets and gathered all they
found, bad and good alike.” This
verse intrigues me greatly. Just as in
Jesus’ time, many were shocked
that He associated with sinners,
when we get to Heaven, we may be
surprised to see who else is
numbered among the saints. God’s
mercy is infinite and available to all.
Let us pray for the conversion of all
sinners so that we will be surprised
to see who is sitting next to us at the
heavenly banquet!

WOMEN OF SPIRIT
Meet Your Mother:
An Introduction to Mary
Ever wonder why so many
people pay so much attention to
Mary, the Mother of Jesus? In
this talk, Dr. Mark Miravalle
covers all the major Church
teachings about the Blessed
Mother. This talk is not only
great for the person who has little or no background knowledge
about Our Lady but also meant
for someone looking to renew
their existing knowledge and
love for the woman who Jesus
gave personally to every human being. Dr.
Miravalle is a professor
of Theology at Franciscan University of
Steubenville and has
written and taught
about Mary for over 25
years. We ask for a $3
donation per CD.
Please remember in your prayers Patrick Orford, brother of
Bobbi Turek of our parish,
Donald Martin, brother of John
Martin of our parish, Melba
Schmidtberger, of our parish,
and Jack Newman, of our
parish.
The ministry of the Women of Spirit is to reach all women of our parish community with an expression of friendship and spiritual growth. Contact Mary
Campbell at marycampbell_129@hotmail.com or (913) 710-8297 with any
questions or if you need a ride to any of our events. For more information on
our organization and our activities, please view our newsletter (located on the
Organizations tab) on the Holy Spirit Church website: www.hscatholic.org.
