Scouting For Food
Since 1910, the ideals of Scouting have guided young men to perform "service to
others and to the community." Responding to the plight of America's poor and
hungry is a traditional Scouting "good turn." During World War I, Boy Scouts
planted vegetable gardens to provide food for the hungry. President Roosevelt
called on Scouts to collect food for the needy during the Great Depression.
Planting Victory Gardens were the Scouting "good turns" organized during World
War II. Today, Boy Scouts continue their Good Turn efforts in community
stewardship through Scouting for Food.
The Scouting for Food Drive, began as a National good turn in 1988; today
as part of the Good Turn for America initiative the Southern NJ Council
continues the tradition. We have partnered once again with our
neighboring Councils and Shop Rite for this year's drive.
November is Scouting for Food
Month
This year our council have established the following dates for the annual drive.
November 15th , is the date for dropping off the bags at area homes,
November 22nd is the date for picking up the filled bags
delivering them to the local food pantry's.
Please join the Garden State Council and local partners in the fight against hunger in Southern NJ. Channel 6 Holiday
Food Drive dated bags and Shop Rite Scouting for Food undated bags are now available at the Rowan Scout Service
Center. Undated Shop Rite bags are currently available at the Riggins Service Center.
Packs, Posts, Troops and Crews that participate in this all so important Good Turn for America Nationwide event will
benefit the less fortunate in our communities.
Final Details will be available sometime in September or October, 2014.
Please give the Scouts in your unit the opportunity to be helpful and to
provide food to the hungry; by putting BSA Scouting for Food on your fall
scheduled. The dates are Nov. 15th and Nov. 22, 2014
