MASS ASS INTENTIONS: What does it mean to have a Mass “offered offered” for someone? An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: for example, in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person (such as on a birthday), or, as is most common, for the repose r of the soul of someone who had died. One must never forget th the e infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’ss soul. If you would like to schedule hedule a Mass intention, please call the parish office. Religious Ed classes are under way for grades K-11, with over 110 students enrolled from more than 60 families. We are also blessed by a staff of 20 volunteers. If you have a child in this age range who would like to participate, please call the church office or Betty Nystrom at ext. 12. We will still accept registrations through the end of this month. For families of returning students who have not returned their registration form or payment, please do so as soon as possible. The next RE class is Oct. 26. The Senior High Youth Rally for students in grades 9-12 is next Sunday, Oct. 26th. We encourage all students to attend. The Rally is one of several “field trips” required in our Confirmation preparation program, especially for the 10th and 11th grade classes. Cost is $15 if registered by Oct. 19th, $25 if turned in later. Extra forms and a collection basket are on the counter in the back of church. Cars will leave St. Anne’s at 10:30 (students will attend Mass at the Rally). Parents will be needed to drive and help chaperone the events. Please call Betty Nystrom if you can help. Religious Ed classes will take place that day, before the Rally. Living Rosary: St. Anne’s will pray our annual Living Rosary on Wed. Oct. 29th at 7:00 p.m. We encourage everyone to come pray together this beautiful prayer. Families especially are asked to attend to experience the power of light overcoming the darkness as candlelight spreads with each prayer. MASS FOR HEALING by the Fraternity of Priests of the Diocese of St. Cloud will be on Monday, October 27th at the Church of All Saints – St. Hedwig’s in Holdingford. All Day Adoration, 4:00 p.m. – Holy Hour with the Priests, 6:00 p.m. – confession, and 7:00 p.m. – Mass. GOSPEL CONNECTION: 29th Sunday of the year Currencies and denominations When you encounter someone for the first time, what do you see first: Their smile? Their scowl? Their walk? Their dress? Their skin color? When you’re interviewing someone for a position with your company or organization, what do you look for first: Their education? Their training? Their accomplishments? The schools they attended? The degree they earned? The spelling of their last name? When you hear someone identify their nationality, what do you immediately presume: That they are fellow countrymen? That they must have some special interest in a specific kind of music or food? That you need to be careful around them? When you see someone wearing a religious symbol of some kind, what’s your initial reaction? They must belong to your church? They must be conservative? They must be self righteous? They must be simplistic, pietistic do-gooders? They might be terrorists? When someone expresses an opinion that you do not agree with or offers an idea with which you do not concur: do you challenge them? Do you engage them in a dialogue? Do you reconsider your own position? Do you walk away? When you meet someone at a function, do you ask yourself: What can I learn from them? Or What can they do for me? Are you able to get beyond race and gender, nationality and religion, politics and culture, to see brothers and sisters as human beings? Or do you accept only specific currencies and denominations or people? Jesus’ encounter with the Pharisees in today’s Gospel centers on a coin – and what that coin represents. But Jesus does let the coin and its inscription force him into making choices and judgments based on politics and religion – and all the issues that surround those institutions. In God, we realize the dignity of every man, woman and child as his sons and daughters and brothers and sisters to one another; as neighbors living in a community, as citizens of a nation, we understand our shared responsibility to provide for the common good and protect the most vulnerable among us. Jesus calls us to approach the complexities and complications facing humanity with God’s Spirit of compassion and a commitment to work together to uphold and protect the dignity of all as children of God.
