Recently, I conducted a Songs of Praise for holiday makers on a campsite in Cornwall and I included several well-known Harvest hymns. I was surprised when a number of young people said later that these hymns were unknown to them. In fact some had never been to a harvest service. The message of the Bible that ‘while the earth remains seed time and harvest shall not cease’ has again become a reality. How grateful we should be for this bounty which we so frequently take for granted. Many of the younger generation have lost out on occasions to give thanks for Harvest. As I thought about this I concluded that, for many, the celebration of Harvest as a Festival has become forgotten or is becoming lost. Platt Green penned words which I believe should challenge us at this season of the year to appreciate what the forgotten Festival of Harvest is about: Past generations with limited agricultural knowledge and limited access to wider markets knew how important seed time and harvest were in their lives. The failure of a crop would mean frugal living for the winter ahead. When the harvest was gathered in they rejoiced with much merrymaking and feasting in what they called ‘Harvest Home’. In our modern world we have become so used to the vast variety of food in season and out of season that we have little regard for the importance of the local harvest. For the fruits of his creation thanks be to God, For his gifts to every nation thanks be to God For the ploughing, sowing, reaping, Silent growth while we are sleeping, Future needs in earth’s safe keeping Thanks be to God. There is another phrase in a harvest hymn that perhaps we might also recall at this season: Accept the gifts we offer for all Thy love imparts, and what you most desire, our humble thankful hearts. Best Wishes, Michael White Baptist Minister Celebration of a Harvest Festival that we know today was introduced in the parish of Morwenstow in Cornwall in 1843 by Revd. Stephen Hawker. He invited his parishioners to a Harvesttide service as he wanted to give thanks to God for providing such plenty. This service took place on 1st October and bread made from the first cut of corn was taken at communion. The idea became popular throughout Victorian England. I have travelled through the West Country and seen huge areas of 3 Christmas Market Thank You The Friends of St. George's will hold a Christmas Market on Saturday 8th November at Beckington Memorial Hall. Enjoy lunch while you shop for home-baked produce, jams & preserves, toiletries, gifts, silk and knitted goods and more! See you there from 12 noon- 3 p.m. Once again I have very good reason to thank my village of Beckington. Nearly two years ago when my Richard died I was supported, nurtured and unreservedly helped to get back on my feet and learn to live again. My recent crushing blow has evinced the same response. Not a day goes by without someone calling to make sure I'm alright - bringing me some small gift and cheering me along. Flower Fund at St. George's If you would like flowers to be placed in the church to remember a special anniversary/birthday or you would like to contribute towards the cost of flowers at Easter, Christmas or Harvest please contact Jenny Ladd at Beckington (830514) to make a cash donation. Apart from that, so many people helped me in the arrangements for the Remembrance Service for my family. I will not mention names as they know who they are but they have my deepest gratitude. Created in Somerset The other people to whom I would like to give my special thanks are the myriad of ladies who baked delicious cakes and biscuits for the tea after the Service and to those who manned the urns and poured countless cups of tea and coffee. Exhibition at The Bishop’s Palace, Wells until 30th November Open daily 10am-4pm The exhibits have all been loaned by Somerset churches and were made within the Diocese. They range from medieval to contempo-rary and include wood carvings, beautiful silverwares, fine embroideries and models of Somerset churches. The exhibition includes St. George's lectern, projections of stained glass made by Somerset artists and hymns by Somerset composers. There are also hands-on activities for visitors: you can make your own stained glass window or consult a digital catalogue. Thank you ALL. Organised by SFCA 7 The tower was lit on 3rd August for Brian George Burton who sadly passed away one year ago, after a very long illness. Loved and missed by your Dear Wife Judith and family xx St. George’s Beckington We would like to expand our team of sidespeople at St. George's, who welcome people to our Sunday services and see to practical tasks (such as lighting candles, giving out orders of service, and taking the collection). We are in immediate need of a regular sidesperson for our third Sunday ('Family Gathering') 4.15pm service. Mike Rustell On the 24th August my brother James and I held a charity football match, The Michael Rustell Memorial Cup in memory of our father Michael Rustell, who was killed in a car crash on the 4th February 2013. We decided to hold a football match as he had a passion for the sport and had played for so many local teams including Frome Town, Coleford and Mells & Vobster FC, also Swindon Town. We wanted to do something which would challenge us and it sure did, from organizing teams, stalls, a Bar, BBQ and great raffle prizes. We just wanted the day to be all about our dad and for people to remember what a great incredible man he was and still is. We also wish to create a 'reserve' of sidespeople who can both step in and also be available for additional seasonal services (such as Good Friday 10am, 'Carols by candlelight' 6.30pm and Christmas Eve 11pm Communion). If you would like to help in this important ministry of welcome and serving, please speak to Sue Conway (830228). Thank you. Grateful thanks to everyone from St. George's and the wider community who helped in so many wonderful ways through the day for the service to mark the lives of Andrew, Estella, Jasper and Friso. Andrew The overall day was a great success and it was good to see so many friends and family turn up to watch and support our event. In total we managed to raise £1161.50 and we both decided that we wanted this to go to Beckington Village Church. Firstly because he grew up in the village and secondly because this is where he has now set up his new home. Floodlighting If you would like the tower to be floodlit on a particular date, please contact Mary Hickling (830274 maryhickling@btinternet.com). Suggested donation £10 payable to PCC Beckington only please. We look forward to organizing more events. Yours Sincerely Lauren & James Rustell 8 playing our part as best we can in its life and ministry, while at the same time looking for other opportunities to serve God outside the institution of the church. St Mary’s Berkley Our joint act of worship with St. George's moves to the second Sunday of each month as from October, as we join together for a 10am service of Holy Communion. We hope that gathering around the Lord's Table together as two congregations will prove both inspiring and unifying. (Our 11am Matins service moves to the first Sunday). Andrew Our Archdeacon, Nicola Sullivan recently got married! She writes: I’m writing to thank you for the many kind messages Terry and I have received over the last few weeks. We had a wonderful day for our wedding on 29th August and have been overwhelmed by the love, prayers and support given to us on that day. As some of you already know, Terry will be taking early retirement at the end of October and will move to Wells from Devon. The household will further expand by the arrival of ‘Sooty’ and ‘Sweep’ - a black Labrador and a Border Terrier! We are looking forward to offering hospitality in a way that has not always been possible for me as a single person and I know Terry will enjoy being part of my life here in Wells and throughout the archdeaconry and diocese. Mary Good To celebrate Mary's 100th birthday, there will be a special service of Matins at Berkley at 11am on Sunday 12th October, to which all are welcome. Many happy returns, Mary! Diocesan news The Right Rev. Peter Maurice, Bishop of Taunton, will be retiring next April. Bishop Peter is well known to us across the Benefice. He writes: My time in the diocese has been immensely rewarding, both as Archdeacon of Wells and the last eight years as Bishop of Taunton. I have felt truly challenged and fulfilled. I will miss the colleagues with whom I have worked so closely, as well as the clergy and other friends that I have got to know and love. Those friends and colleagues will know that I am an urban creature at heart, so Liz and I will move to Maidstone in Kent, where we have found a property not too far from London or West Ham! We will look to be part of that community, We have decided that I will keep my maiden name in the context of my work and ministry as we feel it will be less confusing. I am very happy to be known as Mrs Terence Westwood but on all official documents and correspondence I will remain Nicola Sullivan. Please continue to hold Terry and me in your prayers, as we will all of you in your ministry and service of Christ and His Church. 9 Rode Horticultural Soc. All Saints Rodden Our guest speaker in September was Mr Mike Burks from The Garden Group which is a group of three Garden Centres based in Dorset who talked to the Society to about Fruit Growing. Harvest Thanks-giving is on Sunday October 5th at 6.30pm. The Harvest Supper will take place in the Hall on Monday October 6th at 7pm. There will be an auction of produce, the proceeds going to Dorothy House. His talk started with lots of information about fruit trees and went on to talk about soft fruit. He also included a funny anecdote about the “Worcester Berry” a very thick and prickly new variety of fruit which is a cross between a Gooseberry and a Black Current, and how some intruders had been captured when they ran into the Worcester Bushes and couldn’t escape. MISSING! Two 6ft. wooden folding tables from Rodden Church Hall. If you have borrowed these could you please return them to the hall porch as soon as possible. The Rode Horticultural Society is always happy to welcome visitors and new members at their meetings. The next meeting is at Rode Village Hall on 13th October when the topic is “Caring for Houseplants” Does anyone have an hour to spare once a month taking Network to those who deliver our magazines in the parish? It involves being driven around and hopping out to drop about sixteen bags in various porches etc. Please phone Sheila on 471624. Nowadays, many people are married there -amid the echoes of this almost palpable enchantment. Downstairs, Mr. Goode the butler had his lair, where he slept. He wore a leather apron to clean silver, including cutlery which I was allowed to place in rows - and rose bowls with latticed tops which he filled with dark red roses from Mr. Kent's flower garden. They enveloped the room with their scent. No-one was allowed in, but he used to let me watch him if I was quiet. It was not possible to talk to him because he was deaf. It’s hard to believe we were away for 6 weeks; perhaps even harder to believe that we’ve been back for a month already! We’ve certainly hit the ground running: The PSA’s already on the case, organising a wonderful festive fayre being held at school on Monday 1st December. Plans include having music and singing at the popular afternoon bazaar with stalls, a pop-up café and plenty of fun for all the family. Look out for details next month. - clubs have started up with children not only having a range of lunchtime and after school opportunities but also being able to come in for a pre-school activity every day like gym, dance and martial arts; Amongst the meetings and planning, members have also managed to hold a delightful coffee morning hosted by Maria Beaven, which raised nearly £350, only possible thanks to Maria’s hospitality, the efforts of some fantastic PSA helpers and bakers, Hayley Morgan organising Box House Publishing sales and, of course, the many friends who came along, so thank you one and all. We’ll also have been involved in the village’s Party In The Field with our arts and crafts competitions but due to deadlines, you’ll have to wait for next month’s issue to find out more – as you will to hear what Ofsted thought of us! - pupils have been having great fun with loads of outdoor learning experiences including forest schools, nature explorers and walks; - we welcomed Diane Wilkinson from Ofsted for two days in our first full week back(!); - and we’ve also welcomed (perhaps even more so!?) Ryan into Owl class and Simon who’s come into Robins along with all our new Reception children: Amelia, Amy, Arthur, Caspar, Chelsea, Dexter, Finley, Freyja, Henry, Isabella, Lexia, Lily, Maya, Morgan, Peter, Ruby and Valentina. They’ve already settled in brilliantly and we wish them all the very best for their time with us. Berkley School Another exciting, action packed year has started and for the new reception children in Rabbits class, the beginning of their school life. They have settled in really well and are now staying for lunch and shortly will be in school fulltime. We are already looking forward to the harvest festival service on Tuesday 30th September and are busy learning new songs for this. The children in Squirrels class have written prayers for the family service on the 21st September. The children in Squirrel, Badgers and Owls have also settled well into their new classes. Over the holidays the children have been busy writing blogs for the website about their holidays and these have been a great read. The FBS have already lots of fund raising plans in place , Cake day 13th September, school disco 17th October, fashion show 12th November and on the 29th November the Christmas Fayre and that is just this term. Mrs Jeanette Price, a new Teaching Assistant working in Badgers class, has joined our team and we would all like to wish her well. We would like to say a big thank you to the local community and Asda for their support of the school through the green token system. We have bought some lovely plants for our spiritual garden. Over the summer the school has had a face-lift. The playground and carpark has been resurfaced with tarmac and a small summerhouse, ‘T’he Berkley Den’, has been built. This will be used for one to one teaching and parent meetings. We are embracing the new National Curriculum and are looking forward to some exciting topics and visits this year. We will be starting with Land Sea and Air, our transport topic and we hope to visit a transport museum. We have had a letter and an up-todate photo from Vianney our sponsor child in Burundi. We had a good turn-out for the first meeting after the summer break, with 19 members present. The meeting began with a minute’s silence, in memory of the family of Penny Hoare, one of our members, who died on board the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in July. Orders are being taken for Christmas cards, diaries and calendars. Please sign up soon if you would like to look at the catalogue, which contains a wonderful selection of greetings cards for all occasions, priced very reasonably, plus gifts for all the family from the MU range. All proceeds help the work of MU throughout the world. Our opening worship was led by MU Chaplain the Revd Julie Sims, with a hymn accompanied by Mary on the keyboard. Julie then spoke about her role as Mothers' Union Chaplain for the diocese. She had been ordained in her forties, and sometimes found it difficult to juggle her workload with family life. She is chaplain at a large complex offering elderly and dementia care at Sandford as well as her work with MU where she heads the new Faith and Policy unit. As a Christian organisation, prayer has always been at the heart of the MU, with Mid-day prayers and the Wave of Prayer taking place at some time each day all over the world. The Policy Unit sends out consultation papers to find out the members' response to such matters as domestic violence and how religion affects our lives in this country. Julie gave us a lot of food for thought. Rosemary Ball Iraqi Christians Suffering Reports are still coming in of many thousands in northern Iraq who have experienced the brutal and callous violence of the ISIS jihadists. Their suffering is immense. Over 200,000 Christians plus other non-muslims fled in panic in just their clothes and a few small items. Many left behind either converted to Islam or paid cash to stay… they were all crucified, beheaded or shot. Please pray daily for our Christian brothers and sisters. The Barnabas Fund is in urgent need of donations to reach those who have not yet received aid. Please send donations direct to The Barnabas Fund, 9 Priory Row, Coventry CV1 5EX, or donate by ringing 0800 587 4006. Please help. Thank you. Alan Hawker. In October, the MU Worldwide President, Lynne Tembey, is to visit this area. She will be at the monthly meeting of Hardington Vale MU at Norton St Philip on Tuesday 21st October, and will speak the following day at Monkton Combe School. Some of us met her last year at the National MU meeting in Bath, and were impressed with her warmth and commitment - a date not to be missed. 22 area for allotments is being supplied by David Wilson Homes. b) 30mph limit coming into Beckington past the Texaco Garage – this was not raised as an issue by Highways at the consultation stage. c) State of the pavements around the village – Goose Street to Bath Road pavement will be resurfaced next year. d) Parking on Bath Road between Mes Amis and the garage. The Parish Council would not support the placement of yellow lines in this area as it would only move the problem elsewhere. It is the responsibility of the individual to park considerately. Beckington Parish Council Extract of minutes of the September meeting. For the full minutes see the notice board opposite The Woolpack or: www.beckingtonparishcouncil.org.uk Planning Proposals to include additional two and three bedroom houses: Presentation by Redrow Homes Redrow Homes presented a new layout which now has fewer 4/5 bedroom houses and incorporates a further 2 x 2 bed and 3 x 3 bed properties for sale on the open market. The new layout has over 40% (including affordable housing) 1, 2 or 3 bed properties. 30% of the affordable housing will be shared ownership. The revised plans appear to show a reduction in green space but Redrow assured the Parish Council that this will be addressed at the landscaping stage and the total area would remain very similar. The Parish Council will be formally consulted by Mendip DC when the revised plans are submitted. Concerns had been raised about the presumptive 4/5 bedroom signage put up around Redrow’s site. Redrow will erect new signs if the new proposals are accepted.
