In Europe most of the cathedrals are adorned with intricate beauty that tells the story of faith. Emmanuel has beautiful stained glass windows high above the sanctuary. Someone said, “It’s too bad we cannot see them.” One can see them by looking up and maybe that is the way it should be in worship. We look up to the creator of the one who is the light and the light shines in and through the members of the church. Light shines in the stain glass windows to create a beauty that helps us sense the radiant light of God and to be drawn into worship. There was a stained glass window in one of my parishes that was enclosed and the only way the stain glass would glow was if the light was turned on. The irony was that the builders who put the light behind the stained glass had no way to change the light bulb. When the light burned out it no longer was able to reflect its beauty. After the church went through a renovation the stained glass window was moved to an outside wall where the natural sunlight could reveal its beauty. Sometimes in our lives we need to move to different places to reflect the glory God intended. Moving to a new setting helped me see how God is reflected in new ways. The picture of Emmanuel’s stained glass window of the dove will be used for the installation service worship folder and will be seen by all who attend. Just as we sometimes have to look up to see the beauty of our stained glass, we also can look to others to see God reflected in the lives of individuals who serve. We each have the light of God in all of our lives. The same light promised in the Gospel of John where it says, “In him was the life and the life was the light of all people.” Jesus is the reflection of God. In serving and loving others we sense the presence of God. Emmanuel reflects that presence that Jesus is the light of the world. Looking at people who radiate the light of God truly witnesses to what it means to let our light shine. Someone once was asked, “What does it mean to be a saint?”. The person responded by saying that “A saint was one who reflected the light of God in their lives.” Think of all the members of Emmanuel who have been living reflections of God’s love through the years. We have the command at our baptism to let our light shine that others might see the good works of God in the world. Look up on Sunday to the stained glass windows and know it tells your story of Jesus and how his love came down to reflect the love of God in your life. We are very happy to have Debbie with us and look forward to getting to know her. Helping Hands Ministry If any of our members have not yet met Debbie, please take time to introduce yourselves. Our volunteers and Co-Chairs have helped members with various requests this summer. Most of the calls have been to take folks to appointments although some have been helping with a yard sale, downsizing and moving into a new residence, changing light fixtures, planting a bush or referral phone numbers. Thank you to our volunteers. A Conversation with Pastor Hall Some useful tips for getting help are: Two new sessions for “A conversation with Pastor Hall” have been scheduled for Thursday, October 16th at 2:00 PM and Thursday, October 23rd also at 2:00 PM. The sessions conducted by Pastor Hall in the fellowship hall are limited to 15 people each and last approximately one hour. Sign up sheets will be posted in the Narthex Oct. 4th & 5th and Oct. 11th & 12th. Pick up a Helping Hands brochure in the Welcome Center rack which explains some things we can do and keep it handy. It also provides other numbers you may find useful. Pick up one of the Helping Hands business cards, also in the Welcome Center with both Sharon and Janine’s contact information. Perhaps you could place it on your refrigerator or next to your telephone. Please call as soon as you have made the appointment, or know your request. This will give us ample time to get in touch with our volunteers. Do not think your request is too minor or too small. For instance, changing a smoke detector battery may seem small but can actually save a life, so it is not minor. Maybe you just want to go shopping and need a ride. Maybe something needs to go up in the attic and you can’t reach that high, or it is not wise to get on a ladder. Just call and we will see how we can help. Pastor Livenson Pastor Livenson will be here at Emmanuel in December and will be preaching December 13th & 14th. Please pray for his health and safety as he goes to Kenya September 22nd through November 14th to attend classes. If you think you would like to be added to our list of volunteers, please contact either Sharon Johnson (sjohnson143@verizon.net) phone 941-493-4622 or Janine Jung (janinejoyner@hotmail.com) phone 941-484-2169. "Good Ole Boys" The next breakfast together will be Tuesday, October 21st, at 7:30 AM at Perkins Restaurant. Please call Moose Pfabe at 681-2162 with any questions. 3 3 in 1 - September 14, 2014 Outreach Summer Luncheon, “God’s Work., Our Hands” and Rally Day Emmanuel experienced a wonderful and inspiring event, Sunday, Sept. 14th. When the Outreach Team wrote the goal to provide summer luncheons, we never could have envisioned how much fun and fellowship would result from our efforts. This amazing Sunday three ministry teams worked together to bring the congregation together in celebration. We want to thank Pastor Rob, Outreach Committee Members, Sunday School Ministry - Joline Donelan, Service Day coordinator - Lois Steketee, Roy Smith for the balloons that made it so festive, John Verost for the wonderful grilled burgers and hot dogs, Jan Quinn for her support and everyone who volunteered that day for making it so much fun. 4 From Emmanuel’s Staff: Kris Bowker - Minister of Music and Worship All the choirs will be starting rehearsals the beginning of October. They will be held on Mondays at 10:00am starting October 20th for 6 weeks. They will be held in the conference room at the church office. If you or someone you know has experienced a loss, and could use the support and understanding, along with help and tools to cope, please call to RSVP at 488-4942 ext. 20. There will be a 3 part series called “Advanced Life Choices. Are you Ready?” on October 14, 21, & 28 at 10:00am in the Fellowship Hall. These presentations will be open to the entire community. You can sign up for any or all of these sessions. They are about making choices for life and death. The first session is given by Paula Carney, who is a Certified Senior Advisor. She can give you tips on making decisions about your or a loved one’s future on key health, social and financial issues. She also is the person that has the “Information for Life” book from which everyone could benefit. The second session is presented by Herb Reinders who is a Pre-Planner with the Cremation Society. He will give you burial and cremation options and the costs. You may think your pre-payment plan covers everything but it may not. The 3rd session is presented by Ginny Chappelear who is a Thaentologist. Life is full of transitions and grieving from moving to illness, to death, and bereavement. Learn how to handle it, and where to get help. Bring a friend, refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP by phone 488-4942 ext.20 or email parishnurse@emmaul-elca.org. Barb Spenks - Parish Nurse Joan Hofelich - Ministry Team Coordinator Emmanuel members will have the opportunity, in the coming months, to participate in two ministries that benefit children during the Christmas Season. The Children’s Closet will be sponsoring an “Angel Tree” for the patrons of the Closet and the Sunday School is working on the Christmas Child shoeboxes for children around the world. Please help each ministry as you are able. Rally Day was a big success; and Emmanuel is looking forward to a wonderful year for our Sunday School. I hope that each of you will take the time to thank all of our Sunday School teachers. This is a wonderful ministry that benefits the young and not so young. If you have any questions about our ministries or want to know how to start a ministry, please give me a call at 941-480-9694. God Bless. The Florida Bahamas Synodical Women’s Organization Fall Gathering will once again be held at the Lake Yale Conference Center in Leesburg this November. Dorcas Quilting Mission The Lutheran Relief Quilt Guide says "Most often recipients use their LWR Quilts to shield against the cold and rain, but their versatility also makes them useful as simple tents, floor coverings, or a wrap to hold a baby on his mother's back". To make our quilts suitable for these purposes we need cotton fabric, gently used sheets, sewing thread and crochet thread. To encourage young women to attend, their fees are reduced and scholarship funds have been set aside for them. Consider bringing along your daughter or granddaughter and have her bring a friend! “Share the Spirit” grants are available to help defray costs for anyone wishing to attend. Price remains the same as 2013 – $189.00 for weekend programs, lodging, and meals. Watch the web site www.flwelca.com for additional information regarding the Fall Gathering and registration forms. "Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God." Isaiah 40:1 With the help of the congregation, Emmanuel responds to that commandment through the work of the Dorcas Quilting Mission and the WELCA Circles who assemble various kits. You can also find forms in the Welcome Center at Emmanuel. 6 Dorcas will start work again Monday, October 6th in Room 105 using the donations you have made during the summer. Gifts to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church’s Endowment Fund are truly gifts that keep on giving. Thanks! Dear Members of Emmanuel, Thank you for your overwhelming love and kindness. My wife and I were very moved by the generous gift from the congregation in welcoming us to our new home. We feel at home here in Venice and our new family at Emmanuel. In all my years in ministry, I have not felt more welcomed and moved by your care and love. Alisa and Andria are also very happy for our new home church. In the book of Philippians Paul uses the words, “Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice.” We rejoice in this time of new beginnings and praise God for the members of our new family. In God’s love and Grace, Pastor Rob, Debbie, Andria and Alisa Thank you to all who attended the talk about the File for Life given by our local Paramedics. The turnout was great and unfortunately they ran out of papers to go with the pockets. There are more papers and pockets if you need them, available in the welcome center, and at the church office. Thanks for your support! Barb Spenks - Parish Nurse Thank you to all of the wonderful people who remembered me in prayer during the long summer I was dealing with a broken (in three places) arm. After 18 weeks the Dr has cleared me for PT. Thank you also for the wonderful prayer shawl that was sent to me. I could feel the warmth from all of you. God is the great healer and I praise Him and thank everyone for their concern. Looking forward to returning to Emmanuel this winter. Davis sends his thanks too. God's Blessings, Shirley Darrington 7 Request from the Global Missions Team In the Library we recommend: “Hard Choices for Loving People” by Hank Dunn: The author gives honest, practical, reliable advice and help with emotional and spiritual concerns for families who face the hard choices of end of life decisions. During our lives we all get sick, and we go to doctors for decisions with treatable situations. But as our health declines, decisions and treatments become more complex with difficult choices. Often these decisions need to be addressed by loved ones and family members. This book can help the patient and the care-giver with the difficult decisions involving resuscitation, artificial nutrition, correct facilities for care, and the decision for hospice or comfort care. The content of his book comes not only from Hank Dunn’s studies, but from his first hand experience as an ordained healthcare chaplain who has worked in these situations. His book is written with love and concern for those having to make medical, legal, ethical and moral decisions regarding the last phase of life. It’s new in our library. (Editor’s note: These books tie in very well with the “Advanced Life Choices. Are you Ready?” series being presented in October.) We need driver volunteers to pick up Pastor Livenson and/or our other missionaries at the Tampa airport when they visit us. Please contact Bob Riggs if you can help. 483-4029 Thanks! Insight into the people of Israel and the cultures there are portrayed in this series by the Thoenes. They are historical novels that you won’t want to put down! † Emmanuel received a gift in memory of Sharon Duchen, sister of Sandra Wright, to our Altar Guild. Operation Christmas Child Joline Donelan has offered to chair this worthy ministry for 2014. “Every shoebox gift is an opportunity to touch a child’s heart and share the love of Jesus Christ.” This program has been in operation for 20 years beginning in 1993.Two ways to help are to pack, wrap and fill a shoe box yourself or make a donation to the bins that will be located in the narthex soon. A list of needed items will be in the Welcome Center. On October 5th there will be a wrapping party. Bring a roll of Christmas wrapping paper and help wrap boxes after service. All other materials will be supplied for this great project. Joline is planning a shoe box assembly on November 16th during Sunday School when anyone and everyone can help cover boxes and fill them. Additional details will be forthcoming. The devotional books, Christ in Your Home, for October through December are now available in our church library. (AKA Meals on Wheels). Venice pastors joined ranks in 1969 to initiate a meals program for anyone living in the Venice area unable to prepare a meal due to physical or mental disability, regardless of age or financial status. This might include those just home from the hospital or elderly folks barely able to maintain their homes. It was agreed to avoid government oversight, the official name would indicate our independence. This remains true today along with 501 (c) (3) non profit status. Ed Cruze of Emmanuel Lutheran Church served as first president. Meals were prepared at St. Martha's Church in Sarasota. Drivers gathered at a Boy Scout building behind Venice Nokomis Methodist Church, awaiting meals which were then distributed over several routes around town. In 1983, founding board members of Village on the Isle were looking for a community outreach ministry, a perfect fit for Meals on Wheels. Besides preparing nutritious meals at the modest cost of $3.00, Village on the Isle has provided us with office and food preparation space at no cost for over 30 years. Last year we passed the 1.5 million total meals delivered mark. Today, over 200 dedicated volunteer drivers proudly cover 16 routes, or manage office affairs, 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year, including holidays. Our reliance on donations and grants has greatly increased, as over 20% of our recipients are now unable to pay for meals. We greatly appreciate the steadfast, ongoing support of Emmanuel Lutheran Church! A Special Thank You To the members of the Outreach Committee for all their efforts in providing fun and fellowship through the Summer Luncheon series. Marlyce Holbach, Chair Shirley Schimke Joan Hofelich Jack Robertson Will Kittinger Gail Authier Judy Daniels Barb McLauchlin Our August dinner was well attended. We served 128 dinners plus over 15 takeouts. On the menu was rotisserie chicken quarters, macaroni and cheese, mushroom risotto, steamed mixed vegetables, Boston clam chowder and blonde brownies for dessert. 12 volunteers served and cleaned up after the dinner. The September dinner will be held on Sunday, September 28, from 4:30 pm until 6:00 pm. Our chef, Larry Bishop, hasn’t decided what he’ll serve yet, but watch your Sunday announcement sheet for a menu. 9 Emmanuel’s Family Fun Fair Back Pack Kids Program We are beginning our third year with this ministry team. After serving Venice Middle School where we had a difficult time actually getting the food to the kids and/or the kids to pick it up, we have been given a new assignment. We are now joining with Lakeside Lutheran (with whom we have been packing for a year) to feed one-half of the 72 kids who get back packs at Glenallen Elementary School in North Port. The cost of feeding a child for a week has increased from $2.25 to $4.25, so this will assist Lakeside also. Our current commitment to All Faiths Food Bank for Glenallen is $153.00 each week. We also have committed to supporting the Atwater Elementary Food Pantry by paying one-half if their monthly costs to feed hungry families, which amounts to $300.00. The generous people of Emmanuel donated $13,848.00 in January of 2012. Because we were able to reach such a small number of kids at VMS, we still have over $8000.00 left in our fund. We have not had to ask for more money in three years. That's good news, sort of. It means that we have donated money to feed hungry kids, and have not been feeding enough of them! At the current costs for these two projects, we will be spending $912.00 each month and feeding 36 kids every weekend and many hungry families each month. We will run out of money by the end of the school year, which means we are feeding the hungry! Please contact Judy Daniels or Mike Gippert for more information. Fall Worship Schedule On November 2nd we will return to our fall schedule of having two Worship Services on Sunday mornings at 8:30 and 11:00 AM. Saturday Worship will continue at 5:00 PM as usual. Thursday morning Worship will remain at 10:00 AM. Gail & Jerry Authier are the chairpersons of this ministry team, with Carolyn & Ken Ruble serving as vice chairpersons. We need 4-5 people to pack the groceries every 2 weeks. There is a faithful crew of folks who have been packing regularly, but, if you are interested in helping, please email or call Gail Authier, photos25@comcast.net or 941-485-9971. The bi-weekly packing dates usually involve about a 30 minute donation of time, and with enough people volunteering, it could be only 1 or 2 times a school year. 10 11 13 Dorcas Quilting Mission 9am Alphaettes 9:30am Jan Exercise Class 10am Men’s Chorus 5pm Anna Circle 7pm 20 Dorcas Quilting Mission 9am Jan Quinn Exercise Class 10am Grief & Grace #1 10am Ruth Circle 12:30pm Men’s Chorus 5pm 27 Dorcas Quilting Mission 9am Jan Quinn Exercise Class 10am Grief & Grace #2 10am Youth & Family Committee 12noon Interfaith Dinner 4:30 – 6pm Men’s Chorus 5pm 12 Second Week of Stewardship Sunday School 8:30am Adult Ed 8:30am Worship 9:30am Fellowship/Refreshments 10:45am Adult Ed 11am Keep It Simple Al-Anon 7pm 19 Third Week of Stewardship Adult Ed 8:30am Sunday School 8:30am Worship 9:30am Fellowship & Refreshments 10:45am Adult Ed 11am Keep It Simple Al-Anon 7pm 26 Fourth Week of Stewardship Adult Ed 8:30am Sunday School 8:30am Worship 9:30am Fellowship/Refreshments 10:45am Adult Education 11am Free Friendship Dinner 4:30-6pm Movie 6pm Keep It Simple Al-Anon 7pm 7pm 28 “Are You Ready?” 10am Prayer Shawl Ministry 1:30pm WELCA Board Meeting 4pm United We Stand Narc-Anon 21 Good Ole Boys 7:30am “Are You Ready?” 10am Mary Circle 10am Council Meeting 4pm United We Stand Narc-Anon 7pm Dove Deadline “Are You Ready?” 10am Prayer Shawl 1:30pm United We Stand Narc-Anon 7pm 14 7 Widow’s Group 12Noon Council Executive Committee 12Noon Deborah Circle 6:30pm United We Stand Narc-Anon: 7pm 29 Staff Meeting 8am Sanctuary Choir 4:30pm BBSS AA Group 6:30pm Sisters in Sobriety Al Anon 7pm Speakers AA Group 8:30pm 22 Staff Meeting 8am Sanctuary Choir 4:30pm BBSS AA Group 6:30pm Sisters in Sobriety Al Anon 7pm Speakers AA Group 8:30pm 15 Staff Meeting 8am Naomi Circle 9:30am Sanctuary Choir 4:30pm BBSS AA Group 6:30pm Sisters in Sobriety Al Anon 7pm Speakers AA Group 8:30pm 8 Staff Meeting 8am Sanctuary Choir 4:30pm BBSS AA Group 6:30pm Sisters In Sobriety AA 7 pm Speakers AA Group 8:30pm Staff Meeting 8am BBSS AA Group 6:30pm Sisters In Sobriety AA 7 pm Speakers AA Group 8:30pm 1 30 Mid-Week Worship 10am Joyful Ringers 3:30pm STP&M AA: 6:30pm Peace Pipe Al Anon:7pm On the Island Family Al-Anon 8pm 23 Mid-Week Worship 10am Conversation with our Pastor 2pm Joyful Ringers 3:30pm STP&M AA: 6:30pm Peace Pipe Al Anon:7pm On the Island Family Al-Anon 8pm 16 Mid-Week Worship 10am Conversation with our Pastor 2pm Joyful Ringers 3:30pm STP&M AA: 6:30pm Peace Pipe Al Anon:7pm 9 Mid-Week Worship 10am Joyful Ringers 3:30pm STP&M AA: 6:30pm Peace Pipe Al Anon 7pm On the Island Family Al-Anon 8pm Mid-Week Worship 10am STP&M AA: 6:30pm Peace Pipe Al Anon 7pm On the Island Family Al-Anon 8pm 2 3 SLAA Group 12noon 31 SLAA Group 12noon 24 17 SLAA Group 12noon Children’s Closet 9-11am Barbara Stover Funeral & Reception 11am SLAA Group 12noon 10 Gale Riceman Funeral & Reception 11am SLAA Group 12noon Nominating Committee 1pm Calendar of Events for October, 2014 Emmanuel Lutheran Church 790 S. Luther was a young monk and priest when Michaelangelo was painting the Sistine Chapel in Rome. A few years later, he was a junior faculty member at a new university in small-town Germany, intently studying the Scriptures, “captivated with an extraordinary ardor for understanding Paul in the Epistle to the Romans.” In these days Luther was tormented by the demand for righteousness before God. “I did not love, yes, I hated the righteous God who punishes sinners, and secretly, if not blasphemously, certainly murmuring greatly, I was angry with God.” Then, in the midst of that struggle with God, the message of the Scriptures became clear, like a long-shut door opening wide. When he realized that a “merciful God justifies us by faith … I felt that I was altogether born again and had entered paradise itself through open gates.” What Luther discovered is the freedom of Christians trusting God’s mercy in Christ. As he later wrote, “Faith is God’s work in us. It changes us and makes us to be born anew of God. This faith is a living, busy, active, mighty thing. It is impossible for it not to be doing good works incessantly. Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that believers would stake their lives on it a thousand times.” This discovery set Luther’s life on a new course —both his own life and his public service as a preacher and teacher. When a church-endorsed sales team came to the Wittenberg area in October, 1517, Luther was concerned that the promotion and sale of indulgences undermined the promise of God’s unreserved mercy in Jesus and the faith that trusts that promise. His 95 Theses or Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences became the first of a life-long stream of books, sermons, letters, essays, even hymns in which he expressed his confidence in this life-giving promise from God, the Gospel, and its liberating implications for all of life in church and society.
