Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
****************************************************************************************
For this Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, today's Gospel continues with Jesus and the
religious leaders in Jerusalem at odds with each other over their tense exchange of questions and challenges.
At this point the disciples of the Pharisees, together with the Herodians, try to entrap Jesus by their question
about the payment of taxes.
Matthew sets up an unusual partnership between the Pharisees and the Herodians. The Herodians were
supporters of Herod Antipas, a Jewish political leader who collaborated with the Romans. Such collaboration
would have required a compromised observance of the Mosaic Law. The Pharisees, on the other hand, taught
scrupulous observance of the Mosaic Law and opposed Roman occupation. Herodians favored the payment of
taxes; the Pharisees opposed it. The Herodians and the Pharisees approach Jesus, asking that he take sides in
their dispute. If Jesus answers with the Pharisees, he shows himself to be an enemy of Rome. If he answers
with the Herodians, he offends popular Jewish religious sensibilities.
Jesus' response to this attempt to trap him exposes the guile of his questioners. From his first words to
them, Jesus shows that he is very much aware of what they are trying to do. He asks to see a Roman coin,
which is readily provided to him. It may have come from the hand of a Herodian, but the Pharisees show
themselves to be quite willing to accept this compromise. Jesus has already exposed the Pharisees as
hypocrites.
Jesus takes his response one step further. He asks that his questioners examine the coin. Agreeing that
it is Caesar's image on the coin, Jesus tells them that it must belong to Caesar. Avoiding the question of
lawfulness altogether, Jesus answers their question with simple logic. Then, going further still, Jesus tells them
that their obligation is to pay to God that which belongs to God.
Jesus' response to the Herodians and Pharisees suggests the ethic that Christians ought to adopt. It reminds us of the importance of keeping things in their proper perspective. Do we attach ourselves to worldly
things at the expense of the love and honor that we owe to God?

Pray the rosary every Tuesday
Evening before mass at 6:30 pm
in the Church.
In one of his most focused talks
to date, Stephen Ray discusses
salvation, the authentic biblical
understanding of being "born
again", and how we are saved by
faith, but not "faith alone". With
great humor and doctrinal depth,
he goes all the way back to
Abraham to show that we are
saved by faith and obedience to all that Christ demands of
us.

If you are attending Annunciation and are not registered
with the Parish as a member, we have no idea if you are a
participating Catholic or not, so please register and if you
can not afford to give monetarily please put a prayer card
in the offertory so that we know you are attending. Also
for all of you who pay by cash we really appreciate it but
if you would put it in an envelope we could track that
you are attending as well. It is important when it comes
to things such as baptisms and weddings. We can not say
you are active if we do not know. Thank you...

Please pray for Adrian Kikuo Britton who was baptized
here at Annunciation in August of 1978. He is pursuing
dialogue with religious communities about priestly
formation/discernment. He has asked our parish to pray
for him and his family, Deacon Cliff and Angela Britton.
He says that he will keep us up to date on his progress.

Notes from Annunciation Catholic School
Please join us next Sunday afternoon and evening from 4:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. For the annual
Halloween Family Fun Festival, games, food etc, for all ages. The name has changed due to lack
of significant participation, therefore we will not be decorating the trunks this year. There will
still be plenty of candy to go around and a very safe environment to bring your children.
Our First Quarter has ended and we will be holding Parent-Teacher Conferences this Thursday and Friday
afternoons. Hard to believe we have started the Second Quarter already. Autumn is here, Thanksgiving will
approach quickly with Advent and Christmas here before you know it. Make sure you have your calendars
marked for our ScroogeFest, Nov. 14 and 15. Plan on doing some serious Christmas shopping and avoid the
Dec. rush at all the stores.
Our Book Fair will take place during the Parent Teacher conferences, this weekend and during the week.
Thank you for all your support. Keep us in your prayers as we keep you in ours.

spiritual leaders of our
families by strengthening our faith and being “real world” examples of Christ.
Our group bolsters discussion of faith and prayer life specifically for men,
giving men new ways to reflect upon their lives and be better servants to God and their family. The
result is nothing less than a revived culture, the same culture that Pope John Paul II called the
Culture of Life.
Our mission is “To put the family in the hands of the Father.” We believe it is time for men to step
up and take a leadership role in guiding their families, friends, parishes and their communities towards Christ and the fullness of His Catholic Church.
We welcome you to join us on this journey on Sunday nights. We meet at the Knights of Columbus
