Parish Mission Statement
We, the faithful of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Aloysius, in
communion with the Holy Father, commit ourselves to know, love and
serve God and worship Him together.
This challenges us to know God through sacred Scripture and personal
prayer; to love God in His Eucharistic Presence and to love one
another; to serve Him by educating our children, by ministering to the
sick, the elderly and the poor by proclaiming the Good News of Jesus
Christ and by hospitably reaching out to others.
We commit to this with the grace of God and through the intercession
of Mary, the Mother of God and patroness of St. Mary's County.
ST. ALOYSIUS GONZAGA CATHOLIC CHURCH, LEONARDTOWN, MARYLAND
Scripture Corner
THE WHOLE LAW AND THE PROPHETS
In today’s Gospel (Matthew 22: 34 – 40), a spokesperson for the Pharisees decides to “test” Jesus. “Testing”
here in the Gospel has a negative connotation. The goal of
the questioner is to trap our Lord. The Jewish teachers
talked of hundreds of laws with many interpretations.
Teachers would try to prioritize these laws, asking which
are the most important, as the man asks Christ. The answer
of Jesus is amazingly simple, but would challenge the followers of Christ down through the ages.
Our Lord’s simple, but profound answer is, “You
shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all
your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and
the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall
love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the
prophets depend on these two commandments.” (Matthew
22: 37 – 40)
Interestingly these two commandments are found in
the Old Testament. The command to love God with all
one’s being is based on Deuteronomy 6: 5: “Therefore, you
shall love the Lord, your God, with your whole heart, and
with your whole being, and with your whole strength.” The
command to love one’s neighbor is found in Leviticus 19:
18: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” What Jesus
adds is the insistence that these two commandments should
guide the understanding of everything found in the Law and
the prophets. For example, one cannot love God and not
love God’s children, God’s daughters and sons.
Recent Popes and modern Catholic Social Teaching
stress the importance of these words of Christ. The theme of
Catholic social justice is based on the conviction that every
person is a child of God and must be treated with dignity
and respect. Pope Benedict XVI in his first encyclical, God
is Love, makes this important point: “Building a just social
and civil order, wherein each person receives what is his or
her due, is an essential task which every generation must
take up anew.” (28) Pope Francis has this challenge:
“Every individual Christian and every community is called
to be an instrument of God for the liberation and promotion
of the poor, and for enabling them to be fully a part of society.” (The Joy of the Gospel, 187)

ago. If you are interested in making a donation or learning
more about the group, please do not hesitate to contact a

The Tyson Foods Project A+ program is one of the simplest ways to support Father Andrew White School. For
every label that we turn in, we earn 24¢ to use for art supplies, enrichment activities, athletics, special events,
etc...! These labels can really add up and be of great benefit
to our school. Thank you for keeping an eye out for
them. They can be submitted to the school or in the box in
the church vestibule.
ADOPT-A-STUDENT at FATHER ANDREW WHITE
SCHOOL: Each year there are families who want their
children to have a Catholic education, but need financial
assistance in order to do so. At Father Andrew White
School, we offer tuition aid through the Combs Trust and
our parishes like St. Aloysius, but each year the need grows.
In the past many parishioners have participated in the Adopt
-a-Student Program and our families have been very grateful. Once again we are asking individuals and families in
the parish to consider participating, knowing that no amount
is too small and would be greatly appreciated. Donors and
recipients are anonymous. Please contact the school office
at 301-475-9795 for more information. Donations may be
given through the parish or directly to the school. Thank
you.
