Dear Friends,
Whether Scotland becomes a separate nation or not will be known within 24
hours of writing this. It’s an issue that seems to have come upon us very
suddenly and one with huge repercussions that have scarcely been debated.
I’ve been saddened by the short-termism of some of the debate – getting rid
of Westminster governments when we all know that they come and go – and
the unwillingness to consider the bigger picture. Whatever the result, half of
those living north of the border will be unhappy and relationships within
what is now the UK will change.
As we reflect on the Union and what constitutes unity, maybe there’s
something to be learnt from the Church. Unity is a question that Christians
wrestle with as we worship within different denominations and as we hold
very different views within our own churches.
Famously in John 17 Jesus prayed for the believers that ‘they may all be
one’. Such unity is not about all agreeing about everything, nor about all
believing the same thing; rather it’s about relationships. For Christians, as
we come to fully appreciate God’s love for us, so we are more likely to be
able to respond positively to the command ‘to love one another’.
The cause of Christian unity both today and down the centuries has been
hindered because people have loved their own religious organisations, their
own creeds and their own rituals more than they have loved each other. If
we realised how much God loves us, we’d be better at loving each other
wherever we all come from.

The Easterton, Market Lavington and Urchfont Link
has been operating for over 8 years and works hard to help people to
remain independent in their own homes and to reduce social isolation.
Last year alone volunteers completed 625 tasks, driving a total of 18,0000
miles to hospitals, surgeries, dentists, opticians & chiropodists.
We’ve also helped with shopping & visits to the bank & hairdressers..
We are very grateful for the grants we receive from local parishes and
charities which have enabled us to give a little extra to our clients in the
way of outings and parties.
The number of requests for help increases every year of course and we
always need more volunteers, drivers and non drivers. Many older people
need help with tasks that the rest of us take for granted.

We also need a co-ordinator to take the client requests and arrange for
volunteers to help them. This takes no more than one hour a day. If you

Market Lavington has suffered a sad loss with the closure, in September, of F
& K Davis, the village newsagent. The business was originally owned by Fred
and Kay Davis in 1970 working from a premises opposite the Green Dragon.
They moved to the present site in 1972 and Keith took on the business in the
eighties.
Understandably he has now decided to retire. In the last 30 years or so he has
hardly had a day off, getting up at about 4 a.m each day to sort and prepare
newspapers for delivery or collection, day in, day out, seven days a week.
Recently, he has delivered papers personally. Very few villages still have this
service. It is greatly appreciated by many of his customers, most of whom are
old friends.
As part of their daily routine, they collect their papers and enjoy a chat with
Keith when they call in. They will miss this daily contact.
The shop is more than just a newsagent as it is in the heart of the village.
Thanks to the adverts on the window, courteously received by Keith, all
manner of items can be bought and sold, jobs and services found and events
publicised. A wide variety of magazines are stocked along with all sorts of
cards and minor items.
With the decline of smoking, much trade
has been lost and as Keith observes, the
village has changed with an increase in new
residents who work, and shop, elsewhere.
It has been greatly to our benefit that Keith
has kept going so long and he richly
deserves the peace, late rising and
comforts of retirement. He has many
years backlog to catch up on, visits
around the country to see all the places
and events that he has missed and,
he says, the museums and galleries
that he glimpsed when young.
We wish him a long healthy and happy
retirement and thank him for his many
years service to Market Lavington.

The Parish Council was given notice to quit the Recreation Ground and voted to
repair the stile leading to the new cemetery.

Andrew Stevens killed in action 22 October 1914
Andrew Stevens was born in Salisbury in 1895 and was the adopted son of Levi
and Mary Ann Stevens of High Street, Easterton. Andrew joined the army in
1913 at the age of 18. By this time he had changed his name to Stevens. He
served in Northern Ireland with the Dorsetshire Regiment, but on the outbreak of

war his regiment was sent to France, and they arrived in Le Havre on 16
August 1914. Within a few days they had reached Rue du Marais, close to
Labassee.

Early in the morning of 22 October, whilst Andrew’s battalion was engaged in
digging trenches, they were attacked by the Germans. They were too close for
any strategic withdrawal, and the trenches were soon overrun by the enemy. At
the end of the day seven men were killed, 22 were wounded, and 107 men were
missing.
At first Andrew was listed as a prisoner of war, but it later became evident that

this was not the case and he was recorded as killed in action either on 22
October, or some time later from wounds received. His body was never found
and he is remembered on the memorial at Le Touret.

Oliver Burgess killed in action 24 October 1914
Oliver is believed to have been born in Market Lavington around 1879.

When he was eighteen, Oliver enlisted in the 3 Wiltshire Regiment, but he was
discharged after twelve days because he was unfit for the drill training. He was
said to have been of good character. At the time of his enlistment he was
working as an agricultural labourer in Seend. His next of kin was recorded as his
Uncle, Mr Merritt of Market Lavington. This was probably John Merritt, a
blacksmith living in White Street, Market Lavington

In October 1914, Oliver was serving as a regular soldier in the 2 battalion of
the Wiltshire regiment. He was living at Great Chalfield near Bradford on Avon
prior to his enlistment.
They were engaged in the first battle of Ypres, and Oliver was killed in action on
24.10.1914 at Beselare, Belgium. Superior numbers of German forces attacked
the trenches at 5.30am. They were initially repelled, with heavy German losses,
but a second wave of attack was more successful, leading to continuous fighting
for more than two hours. The Germans managed to breach the defences, and
the Wiltshires were forced to retreat with loss of sixty six men, and many more
were captured.
Oliver is remembered on the Menin Gate at Ypres.

As reported elsewhere, the village newsagents shop has closed on the retirement of Keith
Davis. For over thirty years Keith has risen at about 4 a.m, seven days a week to prepare
and deliver newspapers. He has also supplied papers, magazines, tobacco products and
much else with great courtesy and efficiency.
From general enquiries around the village it is clear that many of the people he has served
so well and for such a long time, would like to contribute with donations as a leaving
present. An Appeal Fund has therefore been set up.
The Market Lavington Post Office has kindly agreed to be the collection point for

will begin to see darker evenings
and colder, wetter nights as the
autumn slips into winter.
Many may look forward to the possibility of snow and the run-up to Christmas. For
some it may be a slight inconvenience as the nights close in and their summer tan
begins to fade. However for a considerable number the winter months can be a
very worrying time.
Inevitably, many of us will spend more time at home and for those that are less
mobile it can become much harder to get out and about, with the cold weather and
fear of ice a daunting reality. Heating bills will increase significantly as we try to
keep our homes warm and with the extra electrical appliances needed comes not
only a financial cost but an increased risk of household fires. With a little extra
support and information, however, we can all face the long winter months with
slightly less fear.
Did you know, for example, that Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service offer free home
fire safety checks? Some of you may be aware of the Winter Fuel payments, but
do you know about the Warm Home Discount Scheme? How about the Home
Heat Helpline? For older residents with a low income or in receipt of certain
benefits there are options to explore for help with heating costs. If you think you
may be eligible or would like to find out more about the home fire safety checks
you can give me a call on 07557 922027 and I will be more than happy to chat
about your options with you.
There are also other less formal ways that we can support those around us over
the winter. Those of you that keep up to date with the news may have seen a
story a couple of months back about an initiative called the Casserole Club.
Personally I think this is a great idea and it works on the basis that if you are
cooking a meal for your family you cook an extra portion and share it with a
neighbour that may not be able to cook for themselves. For someone confined to
their home the winter months can be very isolating and the occasional chat or
warm meal could really help to raise spirits. Whilst the Casserole Club is a formal
group, there is nothing stopping you from inviting a neighbour to join you for
dinner occasionally or popping round with a dish of food and a chat. It could mean
a lot to them and you may make a good friend in the process!

The Autumn term has well and truly started at St Barnabas pre-school and we would
like to welcome our new families and friends who are starting their journeys with us.
This term we are exploring the sea and all the colourful and wonderful things that can
be found hiding under the waves, which will be followed by our exploration into
Autumn and how the world around us gets ready for the winter.
We had a very busy time leading up to the summer holidays, the children had their
annual sports day which they shared with their proud parents and guardians. We said
goodbye to our leavers at our leavers party at Coral Cove and wish them all the success
and happiness as they begin their school journey.
The staff and families of St Barnabas Pre-school would like to thank everyone who
supported our cake stall in Market Lavington to those who baked, who manned the stall

Last July the Parish Council was invited by Wiltshire Council to attend a briefing
on the process for drawing and agreeing revised “Settlement Boundaries”
Set out below is the Parish Councils response to Wiltshire Councils proposals:
On behalf of Market Lavington the Parish Council makes the following comments
on Wiltshire’s Councils Proposals for Revised Settlement Boundaries.
1 The draft Proposed Settlement Boundary for Market Lavington contains within
the defined settlement area the open wooded space known as Canada Wood
(Reference D6, H6 and H8 on the MAP 100049050,20140) This wooded area is a
valuable open village space and should be outside the Settlement Boundary.
2 The draft Proposed Settlement Boundary excludes outlying settlements in Spin
Hill, Kings Road, Drove Lane, Ledge Hill and the Broadway.
3 The Parish Council has been asked to agree to the proposed process for
nd
defining new settlement boundaries by 22 September 2014. The Parish Council
is not able to support or agree to these proposals and wishes to register its
objections to the process adopted by Wiltshire Council. Our reasons are stated
below:
- Draft proposal showing a settlement boundary drawn around the
existing village centre and surrounding buildings, was presented
Wiltshire’s planners in July 2014. The Parish Council is also aware that
currently a number of developers are preparing plans for new housing
developments in the village outside this proposed boundary. The Parish
Council cannot therefore, by implication, agree to a settlement boundary
in the knowledge that it will be incorrect.
-The Parish Council is aware that under the draft Wiltshire Core Strategy,
Wiltshire Council intend to develop a significant number of new houses
within the Parish. As, currently, Wiltshire Council have not indicated how
many new dwellings will be allocated to Market Lavington nor where they
will be built the Parish Council is not able to have any meaningful
consultation with the community regarding future development in the
Parish and without such consultation is unable to agree to any new
settlement boundaries for the village.
- The Parish Council is of the opinion that any future development within
the Parish must recognise and take account of existing village issues,
such as traffic congestion, limited parking, inadequate public transport,
and assistance to maintain and encourage the village’s role as a local
service centre. The Parish Council has twice requested a meeting with
Wiltshire Planners to discuss these issues as part of the process for
development planning and agreeing settlement boundaries. There has
been no response to these requests.

Easterton Village Country Fair 2014
Where were you on August Bank Holiday Monday? Well a great number of you were at the
Easterton Country Fair. Yes, it did rain, didn’t it? And for most of the afternoon and quite
heavily at times too. But it didn’t dampen your spirits and you still turned up in your droves
to support your Fair and to enjoy our wet weather programme in the big tents on the field and
in the Village Hall and in St Barnabas’ Church. Inevitably there were some cancellations
which was a bit disappointing but we got most of our stalls and events under cover. A huge
thank you to all involved in the organisation and direction, those who helped to put it
together and to take it down, but in particular to all those who came on the day to support
your village. And despite everything, didn’t you do well? As a result of your efforts we
have made a small surplus that will go some way to restocking the Forum’s funds after last
year’s depletions. It would not have been such a good day without an awful lot of hard work
and so, to everyone involved, a huge and heartfelt thank you.
This year we have some retirees from the active end of our traditional Fairground activities;
BBQ, Cakes and Bottle Stall come to mind – but semi-retirement might be more accurate as
all are very willing to mentor volunteers next year .… go on, give it a go. You don’t know

Remembrance Sunday Lunch - Sunday 9 November 2014
The Easterton Village Remembrance Sunday Lunch 2014 will take place in the Village Hall,
starting at 1230 hrs. Tickets can only be bought in advance and are available at £12 for adults
with a free welcome drink (children under 6 come free; those aged 6 to 16 are half price).
The menu this year will be curry, with a non-curry and vegetarian option, and dessert. There
will be a bar and a raffle (prizes welcome) and any profits will be donated to the Royal
British Legion and to Services’ charities. Last year around 80 villagers and their families
enjoyed the event, and over £700 was raised and donated to the Royal British Legion and to
SSAFA Wiltshire.
Throughout this year we have been recalling and remembering the start of WW1 and this
will be an opportunity to gather and to remember this village’s sacrifice both in combat and
in support. Seating in the Hall is limited, so please do book quickly to avoid disappointment.

Remembrance Sunday Service - Sunday 9th November 2014
One of the highlights of the year for many in the village is our Remembrance Sunday Service
held in St Barnabas’ Church, following which we hold our annual commemorative and fund
raising lunch. More so than ever, with this year being the commemoration of the start of
WW1, our traditional service remains a poignant reminder of the many sacrifices made by
those who gave their tomorrow so that we can enjoy our today. Following the service we will
inaugurate our new Garden of Remembrance, which was proposed and funded by our Cub
Scouts and dedicated in a moving service on Sunday 3rd August. Please come, bring your
memories and thoughts for the future and join with us at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday 9th
November at St Barnabas’ Church.

Wiltshire Councillor for The Lavingtons & Erlestoke Division
In October we have arranged for the return of the cheerful and knowledgeable
Gordon Brockman, auctioneer from Chippenham Auction Rooms, to talk to us
about ‘valuing antiques’ (our own!) The meeting is at our usual venue and time,
7.30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month, 14th October. Visitors are
welcome to attend our meetings.
If you have a good memory you may recall that, over a year ago, I wrote about the
benefits of joint working with other public sector organisations. The police are now
sharing Wiltshire Council offices and one of the areas where that association is proving
most valuable is in safeguarding vulnerable children. In recent times, this has been a
very topical subject!
Our September meeting told us about the village of Enham Alamein, which was
set up after the end of the First World War, providing homes and retraining for
injured men which continues to help the disabled today. Its slogan was ‘Homes
for Heroes’, sounding rather similar to the charity we are all familiar with today.
One other area where joint working is proving helpful is public health, which was
integrated with the Council in April 2013. The new public health team has just published
its first annual report for the year 2013/14. As I write, the report has only just been
approved by the Cabinet and I cannot provide an easy link but by the time you read this
is will probably be available online via

Over the summer period WI members have attended trips and workshops
organised by Wiltshire Federation of WIs from its HQ in Devizes. These have
included enjoyable trips to the Palace of Westminster and Bletchley Park, and a
perfume blending workshop. Coming up is a drumming workshop called the
‘Rhythms of Life’ and a craft workshop featuring six different crafts, called
‘Not Yet Christmas’, both to be held in the Community Hall in November.

In its first year, the public health team has successfully contained a measles outbreak,
has supported around 2,500 people to stop smoking and has helped 285 people at risk of
diabetes. It also successfully dealt with the health effects of the flooding last winter –
remember that?
Other areas of importance include Early Intervention, ensuring children have the best
start in life, reducing childhood obesity, reducing the impacts of drugs and alcohol and
ensuring sexual health and wellbeing for young people. 5,900 young people were tested
for Chlamydia of which 8.7% were positive and all of whom were treated.
For older people there were many other actions including assisting in the development of
the Joint Wiltshire Dementia Strategy and supporting the “Before I Forget” campaign.

Wiltshire Council and the NHS CCG are working closely together on the wider aspects of
mental health and a consultation will soon be underway on the strategy to deal with this.

considering a merger with Dorset and closer association with Wiltshire and Swindon

Season is now in full swing again, with age groups from
reception year (age 5) to Adult level. It is a credit to this
Club that we now have 3 Adult teams (2 Saturday, and 1
Sunday League team), with many of the players starting in
the Club at Junior level.
At the Junior level, we now have a small group of 5 year olds who train at
St.Barnabas’ School on Saturday mornings at 09.00 a.m. Whilst the Under 7
and 8s are also playing matches here, with recent good results for both U7
teams – (Badgers and Cubs) against Bishops Cannings and Calne, whilst
the Under 8’s played Trowbridge. Big thank you to the team kit sponsors for
this season to H K Motors (Under 7 team) and Phil Stone Builders (U8
team).
Preseason U14’s have played matches at Warminster, Corsham and
Trowbridge Town registering wins in each of the games. Their first game of
the league season was away against ‘Bath Arsenal’ (Mid-Somer Norton
League and Cup Winners last season) and they registered a very credible 11 draw. A goal from Harry Davis with assist from Alfie Brinton, backed up by
3 stunning saves from James Black were the highlights of a very
hardworking performance. The only downside was a trip to the hospital for
Harry Davis afterwards after injuring his knee. X-Rays proved clear, so just
recovery time required.
