Liturgy of Remembrance The Church traditionally dedicates the month of November to remembering those who lived lives of faith in word and in deed, and have been called home to God to share in the life of the saints. We, therefore, celebrate the lives of our loved ones next weekend by remembering those who have died this past year. At all the weekend liturgies we will hold in prayer our parishioners and family members who have been called home to God. For those who are grieving their loved ones, this past year may have been extremely difficult. Letting go of someone whom we love and learning to live without them in our daily lives needs the strength and support of a praying community. Together, we come to trust in the promises of a loving God who holds us close and wipes away every tear. And so, together this weekend, we pray that God may ease the pain of those who grieve and open them to the hope and promise of our faith. Funeral and Bereavement Ministry Our coffee/and this weekend is hosted by our Extend-A -Hand Committee. This committee provides comfort, help and compassion to parishioners and family members when they experience the death of a loved one. They arrange a reception in the social hall following a funeral Mass. They order food and drinks, set up the room, and make sandwiches. Those who can not be present at the reception bake dessert items and drop them. These ‘small gestures’ are an enormous comfort to those who grieve. The presence of our parishioners at a wake service or as greeters at a funeral is such a source of comfort to those who grieve. On the day of the funerals, parishioners can serve as greeters, welcoming people to our parish, offering our sympathies, directing them to the coat closet, the rest rooms, and to the church. All these are simple signs of our simple hospitality. Our parish offers support for this grieving process through our Bereavement Ministry. There is a monthly support group for the purpose of sharing and understanding the emotional anxiety that accompany the grieving process. There is also a group that meets twice a year for a ten-week session. They use a process of journaling to assist the bereaved through grief to healing. Both groups are held during the day and the facilitators of these groups are trained in this process. The best feedback that we receive from these groups is that “there is such support in being with others who are experiencing the same thing. I can’t seem to talk to my family in the same way that I can speak to others who are grieving. We truly understand one another.” The pastoral staff is also available for pastoral conversations to support those who are grieving. Our Stephen Ministers are available to offer one-to-one support for as long as is needed. If you would like more information about any of the funeral and bereavement ministries or are interested in volunteering in our Extend-A-Hand or funeral ministries, please call me at 203-264-5071. May we hold in our hearts all those who are grieving at this time. May they find peace and comfort in the support of our community. And may they know the warm embrace of God’s presence and God’s love. Sister Pat Five Wishes Program - Nov. 10 at 7PM Our parish nurses are offering the FIVE WISHES program - a way of planning for and discussing care at the end of life. Health care agent, living wills, comfort care, palliative vs. hospice care, and planning your funeral will be discussed. This is an opportunity for families to talk with their loved ones about "end of life" issues. This will be held on Friday, November 10 at 7:00 pm in the Jerusalem Room. 3 October 26, 2014 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Navigating the Rough Waters From a Griever’s toolbox – and their real life experience. How to deal with grief: Talk, talk, talk. Don’t isolate yourself. Remember your loved ones. Talk about the good times you shared. Celebrate the important dates. Join a grief group. Discover that you are not the only one feeling this way. A grief shared brings you closer to healing. We do not heal in isolation. Deal with regrets – as best you can – with a trusted friend or family member. Holding on to “if only” or “I wish I had” doesn’t serve any purpose after the initial reflection. Don’t make major decisions until you have experienced all the firsts – the first anniversary, birthday, holidays – without your loved one. Be present to these special moments. Usually the anticipation of the holiday is worse than the actual day. So hold on. Be social. Our parish offers support through our bereavement groups, our Stephen Ministers, and our pastoral staff. Give us a call today at 203-264-5071. Or have a friend call us for you. We are here to guide you through this. Bereavement Monthly Support Group If you are struggling with a loss and would like support on your journey from grief to healing you might consider our monthly support group at Sacred Heart. For information, call Catherine Hughes 203-758-5421 or Carol McGrath at 203-264-6857. Women Sharing Wisdom WSW meets Monday, November 3rd from 7-8:30 pm in the Jerusalem room. Join with other like-minded women who are seeking to deepen their faith as they reflect on their life’s experiences. We will have time for presentation, prayer, ritual, sharing, and reflection – and of course laughter and tears and friendship. Please bring a notebook and a bible - and a can of coffee or a box of black tea for the food bank. Contact Sr. Pat at 203-2645071 or spt@sacredheartchurch.info Ladies in Faith Together LIFT meets weekly on Tuesdays mornings to pray, study, share, and provide service. Putting Your Gifts to Use Stephen Ministry is a ministry in which people with special gifts for caring ministry can put those gifts to use in an organized way, bring Jesus’ love and care to those who most need it. One of our Stephen Ministers offered this reflection: “Stephen Ministry has given me an opportunity to share my faith and love and trust in God. I never thought about being in service in this way – to be present to others through listening and being still - not offering advice, certainly not judging. I look for the silver lining or the blessing of God’s presence in the situation. It has made me more comfortable to serve in other ways in the faith community. I am more relaxed and try to be wherever it is that God wants me to be.” Our Stephen Ministers are trained and they care. They want to help. If you are experiencing a difficult time or if you or someone you know would benefit from a confidential conversation with one of our Stephen Ministers, please call Lynn Tidgwell at 203-217-0025, Sister Pat at 203-264-5071 and Stephen Minister Catherine Hughes at 203-758-5421 or log onto: www.stephenministries.org (From Stephen Series) Mass of Healing and Hope - Nov. 10, 7:30PM A Mass of Healing and Hope will be celebrated by Father Larry Carew, Pastor of Christ the King Church, Trumbull.
