Page 1 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reflecon by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson First Reading: Exodus 22:20-26 In Old Testament times, foreigners who lived with a group for a considerable time were often considered as needing protection, just as did widows and orphans. So this became an obligation for the base community. Second Reading: I Thessalonians 1:5c-10 Paul first expresses his affection for the Thessalonian community and then declares that their conversion to Christianity was a powerful witness to the peoples of Macedonia and Achaia. Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40 Jesus answers his lawyer questioner with what was later defined as “the great commandment.” He sees all laws as a unity, based upon and supported by love of God. Immaculate Conception Parish will be celebrating our Annual Mass of Remembrance to honor and remember all of our parishioners and their families who have experienced a loss this past year. The Mass of Remembrance will take place on Sunday, November 2 at the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Refreshments will follow in Conahan Hall. Please contact Marie McGuigan at 215-884-4022 for any questions or concerns. All parishioners are invited to add the name of a loved one even if your loss did not occur within the past year. 145 ICBVM THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Thoughts from the Second Floor Front XXX Sunday in Ordinary Time October 26, 2014 Reflections on a presentation by Dr. Jonathan Reyes (continued). This is part two of a column begun last week. In light of the societal changes that affect families, which we began exploring last week, how can we respond? Raising a family requires an intentional effort to create a family culture that is distinct from contemporary culture. The contemporary culture in which we live is, in many ways, hostile to our families. Sometimes the hostility is readily recognizable. Sometimes the hostility is covert, characterized by subtlety such that we do not recognize it as hostility. A simple demonstration of this is to reflect on the way fathers of families are presented in popular media, especially on television and in film. Often you see fathers portrayed as imbecilic bumblers who eventually come out all right in the end because of the intervention of some other family member, usually a child. Humorous perhaps but subtly disruptive. An example of the portrayal of the father as an inconsequential dope is found in the movie “Back to the Future.” In that film, the father is portrayed as a total incompetent who, through the time travelling, mad-cap antics and intervention of his son, is saved from becoming a loser before he becomes his father. The child intervenes on behalf of the adult who is obviously incapable of providing for himself let alone his family. To address the influences on our families from contemporary culture, realize that the modern world is dis-ordered towards fragmentation of relationships. The great call in our time is for autonomous individuality which stands against relationships. In a culture ordered towards individualism parents need to order families toward unity. The gospel message is to be lived in community. The most basic community is the family and it is there where we are to live the message we celebrate each Sunday. Being with one another, especially at meals, goes a long way to establish relationships within family. In my family, growing up we were expected to be at dinner with the family each weeknight. After an argument with a sibling there were some nights when I didn’t want to be there but that is also a part of relationships – getting over yourself. When I taught a lesson on the Eucharist in high school I would take an annual informal survey. I asked the students to raise their hands if they ate with their families once a week…twice a week…three times a week… Eventually reaching five, six or seven days a week there were no hands in the air. Some of the most important moments in a family’s life together take place at a meal. The most important event in the life of our parish family is a meal. It is the sacred meal we call the Eucharist. Recognize the importance of a meal with each other. Food eaten alone is a function. Sharing food with others is sacramental. The modern world is dis-ordered towards an attack on authority. The presumption seems to be to reject authority whether that is civil or legal or ecclesial. Authority is an issue in the Gospels. It is an issue for Jesus, for those who challenged him and for those who follow him. He was questioned “By what authority do you do these things?” St. Matthew tells us that Jesus differs from other teachers in that “He teaches with authority.” If one engages practical relativism to decide what is right or wrong then the individual becomes his or her own authority. There is a loss that occurs in that scenario; a loss of wisdom of others as well as their guidance and support. Children need others for the guidance that is possible through loving nurturing parents provide. In the guidance parents provide they are not only safeguarding their children they are helping them grow in their understanding of the importance of family. All is not lost; however there is a need for vigilance in order to preserve our families. (More next week. Then the conclusion) Faithfully, Msgr.
