And these people would not consider themselves as a ‘musician’ but rather as using music as a hobby. Tonight’s Equipment Tonight, I will be using a Compaq laptop with XP Home The keyboard is a Roland PC300. All connections are via USB cables The sounds that you will hear will be through a) An SD 80 Sound Module (via USB MIDI) b) An Edirol Software synth plug-in c) A stand alone Roland Virtual Sound Canvas - VSC 88H3 The software is Cakewalk Home Studio I am using a UA700 as my midi and audio interface Midi? Vs Audio? A midi file consists of a list of instructions or ‘sequence’ that tells the synthesizer, keyboard or sound card which note to play, Midi files have the ‘mid’ extension and do not contain digitized audio as in a wave file and is a tiny fraction of the size since it only consists of instructions Quality of playback entirely dependent on quality of synthesizer, keyboard or soundcard regardless of how well the sequence has been prepared. Midi in Musical Performance An invaluable aid in rehearsing for a concert Can provide accompaniment for singer or instrumentalist Can mute out any track and play along with accompaniment Ideal for speeding up or slowing down music without altering pitch Music can easily be transposed to another pitch to suit singers These effects are more difficult with analogue recordings USB Midi Interfaces UM-1 1-in/1-out USB to MIDI interface All-in-one single cable operation UM-1S 1-in/1-out USB to MIDI interface Allows for longer midi cables UM-2 2-in/2-out (32 channel) USB to MIDI interface Signal indicators UM-550 UM-880 5-in, 5-out USB MIDI Interface Stand-alone MIDI Patch bay 8-in, 8-out USB MIDI Interface Stand-alone MIDI Patch bay Audio Capture UA-1A L/R-in/L/R-out (RCA) USB to Audio interface 16-bit/44.1kHz / USB powered UA-1D Optical and coaxial S/P DIF I/O connectors 16-bit/44.1kHz / USB powered UA-3D UA-20 1 stereo record/1 stereo playback/Full duplex AD/DA 16-bit Signal Processing USB Digital/Analog Audio and MIDI interface Optical S/P DIF digital out /Analog AD/DA 24-bit UA-5 UA-700 USB Digital/Analog Audio interface Optical and coaxial S/P DIF I/O connectors Analog AD/DA 24-bit up to 96kHz XLR phantom, guitar (Hi-Z) inputs USB Digital/Analog Audio interface Optical and coaxial S/P DIF I/O connectors Analog AD/DA 24-bit up to 96kHz 2 x Combo XLR/TRS inputs, guitar (Hi-Z) inpu RCA Line L/R input; Phone L/R input DA-2496 USB Digital/Analog Audio interface Optical and coaxial S/P DIF I/O connectors Analog AD/DA 24-bit up to 96kHz XLR phantom, dynamic or guitar (Hi-Z) inputs Line L/R standard jack / Line L/R RCA pin jack Keyboards PC-300 Midi Keyboard Controller USB powered 49 note velocity sensitive keys USB and midi interface PC-70 Midi Keyboard Controller 49 note velocity sensitive keys 3 digit LED display PC-160A Midi Keyboard Controller 32 note velocity sensitive keys Comes bundled with Cubasis AV Sound Modules Sound Module / Powered by USB USB, Midi in, serial ports 660 tones / 23 drum sets GM2/GS/Xglite 64 note polyphony / 32 part multi timbral SD-20 SD-80 USB High Performance Digital MIDI Sound Module 1050 instruments / 30 drum sets / GM/GM2/XGlite 128 note polyphony / 32 part multi timbral 2 x Midi In; 1 x Midi Out; 1 x Midi Out/Thru SD-90 USB Digital Audio/MIDI interface Optical and coaxial S/P DIF I/O connectors Guitar, vocal, ambience effects for audio. 1024 instruments / 36 drum sets / GM/GM2 64 note polyphony / 32 part multi timbral Powered Speakers MA-10A & MA 10D Stereo Monitors 10w x 10w / 2 way bass reflex Line in 1 (stereo mini), Line in 2 (RCA pin L/R), Bass x 1/ Treble x 1/ Volume x 2 controls MA10D only 24 bit signal processing 96kHz sample rate / Optical/coaxial outputs (rear), Optical output (front).
