RECOGNIZING AND REJOICING IN THE PRESENCE
OF THE LORD IN HIS PEOPLE, THE CHURCH!!
For citizens of the US establishment, ownership of a
home is often cited as the "American Dream." So
many of our cultural elements are based on the
concept of "home." TV shows such as "This Old
House" provide information for people wanting to
improve or renovate their homes. There is even at
least one TV channel that focuses on do-it-yourself
efforts to make improvements to windows and doors,
update plumbing and electrical systems, and renovate
kitchens and bathrooms.
Our view of "home" today is really a logical
extension of a desire to settle down in a place of our
own throughout all human history.
In like manner, people have established houses of
worship, best exemplified by the temple of Jerusalem
and many edifices constructed by practitioners of
Christianity. Today's feast on the Church's calendar
celebrates the dedication of the basilica of St. John
Lateran, the "home church" of the bishop of Rome.
Since the beginnings of religious faith, temples or
houses of worship have played an important role in
the lives of believers
The prophet Ezekiel had a vision of a temple with
an angel guide. A stream of water in Ezekiel's vision
symbolizes new life flowing from God to his people.
The water brings forth new life in the form of all
kinds of living creatures. Trees bearing fresh fruit are
another sign of God's presence. The fruit of the trees
will not only be food but also serve as medicine.
Basilica of St. John Lateran - “home
church” of the Bishop of Rome
Paul lays claim to his role as one of the builders of the
foundation of the community of believers that is the
Church. Paul makes it clear that the community of
believers is the metaphorical building in which God
dwells. Paul compares himself to a master builder because
of his role in the formation of the Church. Paul makes it
clear that the true foundation of the Church is Christ.
Paul reminds us that members of the Church can
contribute to its building but can also harm the Church.
Jesus makes it obvious that he has come to bring the
old belief system to fulfillment. John's account says
Jesus arrived at the temple near the observance of
Passover at the beginning of his ministry. Saying they had
made the house of God into a marketplace, Jesus drove
those who were selling animals for sacrifice as well as the
money-changers out of the temple. On being challenged
by those who remained, Jesus made a seemingly
preposterous claim about destroying the temple and
raising it up in three days. Jesus was actually speaking
about the temple of his body and alluding to his own
death and resurrection. The evangelist John notes that the
disciples remembered these remarks after the resurrection.
Believers in Christ do not require a building to be in
the presence of God. While believers have always sought
a place or building in which to worship God, such
physical structures are no longer essential. We who
believe in Christ can know God's presence wherever we
are. The community of the Church is Christ's body
manifested in our world.
Whenever we gather, God is in our midst. Knowing that,
we approach the Lord's table in the Lord's home to
celebrate the presence of Christ in our world and in each
of us.

prayer.
Whether your child is preparing to receive sacraments at Easter Vigil 2015 or Easter Vigil 2016,

Respect Life
"Dear heart, we simply disagree. Suffering is not the absence of goodness, it is not the absence of beauty,
but perhaps it can be the place where true beauty can be known."
Those words were lovingly written to Brittany Maynard, a young 29 year old bride who had received the
frightening diagnosis of terminal brain cancer by Kara Tippetts, a young wife and mother of 4 young
children who is slowly dying of cancer.
Last Saturday, November 1st, Brittany Maynard took her own life. Brittany and her husband moved from
California to Oregon in order to participate in "Physician Assisted Suicide". Brittany wanted to be in control
of both her life and her death. She published videos on Facebook and other mass media explaining her
desire to avoid the pain and suffering that are so often a part of living and dying. Brittany said she wanted to die on her own
terms with what she considered "dignity" and encouraged others to do the same by legalizing euthanasia in all states.
The early Fathers of the Church termed Mary and Jesus "The New Eve" and "The New Adam" for good reason. As Eve
succumbed to fear in her choice, deciding to trust only herself, Mary, also in fearful circumstances
because of the Angel Gabriel's request, chose to trust God completely as she responded with her wonderful "yes!"
As Adam remained silent refusing to risk injury or death for the sake of his bride, Jesus journeyed intentionally to Jerusalem
refusing Peter's entreaties to avoid the suffering and death awaiting Him there, calling out to His Father "Not My Will but
Your Will be done!" From Adam and Eve's choices came separation, suffering and death. From Mary and Jesus we are
reconciled to God, Who is Life-giving Love, and we receive eternal life.
Phil Johnson was 24 when he received the same diagnosis as Brittany Maynard. Like Kara Tippetts he wrote a loving response
to Brittany sympathizing with her fears and her pain but assuring her "suffering is not worthless, and our lives are not our own
to take."
Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Pope St. John Paul II, Kara Tippetts and Phil Johnson are models we can look to for truth and
beauty in the midst of life's painful mysteries. You can read Kara Tippetts' deeply moving blogs at
mundane faithfulness.con or link through www.catholicnewsagency.com. Can death be beautiful? A response to Brittany
Maynard. Phil Johnson is serving in the Diocese of Raleigh, NC hoping to be ordained a transitional deacon this spring.
His letter is on Father Jonathan Morris' Facebook page.

We are blessed to have Fr. Michael Barry, SS.CC.,
come to South Florida to lead us in a powerful evening
of prayer and healing. Fr. Barry is from San
Bernardino, California, where he tends Mary's Table,
a ministry for the poor. He also travels the world
giving Healing of the Family Tree Workshops and
Retreats. He is the former provincial of his order, The
congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
Fr. Barry has visited our area many times over the past
several years doing healing masses and retreats. Those
who have come can attest to the joy they have felt in
hearing Fr. Barry's insightful sharing and healing
prayer. His Irish charm and humor keeps spirits high.
EVER WONDER ABOUT
SINGING IN THE CHOIR?
Music is the heart of worship in
many Catholic churches,
including St. Mark. Music at St.
Mark is planned to complement
the Liturgy of the Word, our
pastoral homilies and our
Eucharistic unity as a parish. If
you have ever wanted to or
wondered what it would be like
to sing in our choirs, come give us a try. Middle and high
school students are welcome to sing with the 9:30 Mass
choir. For many of you who love to sing at Mass, singing
in the choir is only a matter of changing where you sit. For
9:30 and 11:00 masses on Sundays, please contact Mary
Lou Corbiere by email mlc88keys8@att.net. For 12:30
Spanish choir Mass on Sundays, please contact Bill
Clifford by email william.clifford.mit@gmail.com.
The St. Mark Women’s Club Holiday Mart will be
