CHRIST IS A KING,
BUT HIS KINGDOM IS NOT OF THIS WORLD!!
St. Thomas More, the 16th-century Lord Chancellor of
England, was beheaded for refusing to sign a letter asking
Pope Clement VII to annul King Henry VIII's marriage to
Catherine of Aragon because she had not given him a son.
He further antagonized Henry VIII by refusing to take an
Oath of Supremacy declaring Henry Supreme Head of the
Church of England. On his way to the scaffold, Thomas
sent a message to Henry saying, "I die the king's faithful
servant, but God's first."
Thomas knew that he had given his best to the king and
done his best to further the king's reign, even though Henry
did not recognize it. Like St. Thomas, we are to be Christ
the King's good servants. In fact, the reign of God will be
a long time coming unless we are our King's good
servants-unless we mean it when we pray, "Thy kingdom
come," and then put some muscle into our prayer by doing
something about it.
It has been said that Christ is a powerless king because
his kingdom is totally at odds with any display of power
in this world. We have all seen examples of people who
abuse their power in an attempt to dominate and
manipulate others. That kind of power has no place in
Christ's kingdom. The epitome of Christ as a powerless
king is seen especially in Jesus' total powerlessness on the
cross.
Violence or retribution are totally foreign to Christ's
kingdom. The feast of Christ the King is a recent feast. It
was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 precisely because
nations and rulers were abusing their power at the time.
Dominance, competition, and vengeance have no place in
Christ's kingdom. The values of Christ's kingdom are
service and humility.
Christ the King is a living symbol of God's lavishness.
Christ the King is someone looking out for us, using the
power of God for our benefit. That power reaches not
only into the future, beyond space and time. It also
reaches the here and now. It includes and speaks to us. It
permeates us. God's reign, God's kingdom, is present
whenever anyone is willing to stand and speak the truth
- as Jesus stood and spoke for the truth.
Christ the King was chosen by God to serve God's
people. How heartening to have someone with power on
our side. How comforting to have someone looking out
for us and for our good. Through the Spirit, Christ the
King gives us power to use for the benefit of the
powerless-the least of our sisters and brothers.
And how do we use that power to benefit the
powerless? Today's Gospel is quite clear about that.
Feed the hungry.
Give drink to the thirsty.
Clothe the naked.
Welcome the stranger.
Comfort the ill.
Visit the imprisoned.
The fulfillment of Christ's kingdom in large part relies on
us. It relies on our possessing faith, hope, and love that
are strong and far-reaching. Christ's kingdom relies on our
willingness to-like St. Thomas More-give our best as our
King's good servants.
As we move now to celebrate the banquet of God's lavish
and limitless love-and abundant nourishment- let us be
open to the power of God's Spirit working in and through
us. That Spirit empowers us to share this bountiful love
and nourishment with all others in the world. This is
indeed something for which to give thanks in today's
celebration of the Eucharist and through the coming
week as we approach our nation's celebration of thanks.

As we celebrate this Thanksgiving Day with our own families, giving thanks to God for all His
blessings in our lives, let us include one another in our prayers. We are grateful for each volunteer
and every family member with whom we are all "partners in grace" (Ph1: 7).
REMINDER TO ALL FAMILIES, CATECHISTS AND VOLUNTEERS: There will be no classes in
session during Thanksgiving week - Tuesday, November 25th and Wednesday, November 26th.
OUR OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH THROUGH
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH•
WE WILL OPEN AGAIN AS USUAL ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 1ST
THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE: Thank you to all the families who participated in the Thanksgiving Food
Drive. Your generous support enabled us to assemble over 50 baskets for the parish Outreach program.
SHOEBOXES FOR HAITI: At both the 5 PM and 7 PM sessions on November 18th, the 7th , preConfirmation 8th, Confirmation 8th grade and High School Confirmation candidates attended a
presentation of need and hope from Amor En Accion, (an outreach arm of the Archdiocese of Miami).
Afterwards, each Confirmation student was given the Project materials: a plastic lidded shoebox with
instructions/suggestions on filling; pre-Confirmation students will be participating by collecting bulk items
and they received a flyer with these class assignments. Parents, please check with your Confirmation
7th through High School students for these materials and guide its completion. In order to meet shipping
deadlines, all shoeboxes and bulk items will be due on December 2nd, so parents should be aware of
this distribution. This is a beautiful living beatitude to help those who continue to live in great poverty.
Although it is probably unnecessary to say it, participation is mandatory for all pre-Confirmation and
Confirmation students. We thank all parents in advance for your generosity - we know you will be taking
this opportunity to model how we live our faith.
CHILDREN'S CATECHUMENATE PROGRAM - Next week, we will celebrate the Liturgical New Year of
the Catholic Church - the First Sunday of Advent -- on November so: On the second Sunday of Advent,
December7th, our catechumen will be participating in the Rite of Acceptance. In order to be prepared for
this rite, the students must be attending Sunday Catechesis. All families attend the 9:30AM Mass and
sit together in the designated pews. At the homily, the children will be blessed and sent with their
catechist team to room 114 (located in the downstairs hall of the North school building) for catechesis.
Parents and other family members will join them after Mass for the closing prayer.
Whether your child is preparing to receive sacraments at Easter Vigil 2015 or Easter Vigil 2016,
participation in the Sunday Catechesis is required. If your child is a catechumen and you do not have the
materials from the Orientation held on October yth please see the Sunday team catechists or contact the
office of Religious Education as soon as possible.
This is the last week for our SHOES4LIFE campaign for Covenant House (serves the homeless
youth). Old or new shoes for teenagers. Drop them off in the CCD office or the Church office.
RCIA - On Monday, November 24th class will be in session. See you in room 114 at 7:00 PM.

NEW HOMEBOUND MINISTRY AT ST. MARK
Ministry to the Homebound is a pastoral ministry of caring for those in their own home. Please contact the Church
office if you know of someone who is a homebound parishioner of St. Mark and who would like to receive the Holy
Eucharist on a regular basis.
Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a holiday celebrated in the
United States on the fourth Thursday in November. It became an official Federal
holiday in 1863, when, during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed
a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in
the Heavens", to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Also, there are
reports that the original Thanksgiving proclamation was signed by George
Washington. As a federal and public holiday in the U.S., Thanksgiving is one of the
major holidays of the year. Together with Christmas and New Year, Thanksgiving is
a part of the broader holiday season.
The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by
the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in 1621. This feast lasted three
days, and it was attended by 90 Native Americans (as accounted by attendee Edward
Winslow) and 53 Pilgrims. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly
celebrating "thanksgivings"- days of prayer
