THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE EUCHARIST
IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC WAY OF LIFE!!
A chicken and a pig were walking down a country lane one
sunny fall day, enjoying the weather, the autumn colors,
and a little conversation. They came upon a sign that read:
"Famous country Breakfast this weekend." The sign
stated the menu: fried eggs, biscuits and gravy, juicy
sausages, tender ham, and crispy bacon. All you can eat!
"Wow" said the chicken to the pig. "You must be proud to
play such a starring role and to participate in a breakfast
like that." The pig grunted, and said, "Well for you it's
participation, for me, it's total commitment" (source
unknown). Participation is free. Commitment costs you.
Summer is over. Fall is here. The year-end holidays are not
far off: All Hallows' Eve, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
They are all great feasts. Eucharist is a weekly great feast,
too. All of them require your participation and
commitment.
How do you anticipate, prepare and commit yourself
for not only the year-end holidays, but for Mass each
week? What kind of host are you? Attentive, passive,
exciting, boring? Special occasions require commitment.
Will your guests or parishioners find the feast memorable
or forgettable? What kind of guest are you? Lively and
active in the festivities, a wallflower, or a party pooper?
Both host/presider and guest/worshiper have key roles to
play. Both parties must commit to make the event work
well.
Every Mass we celebrate is a wonderful feast. What
kind of role do you take at the Lord's Table? Some people
may be quiet, mute-just there, unassuming and unseen.
Praying the responses, singing psalms and hymns require
commitment. Active participation makes Eucharist
memorable. Gratefully receiving Communion is so often
taken for granted. What you receive into the palm of your
hand, what you experience throughout the entire liturgy is
Jesus himself. Showing up is a good thing in itself, but we
are called by the Holy Spirit to engage ourselves in this
wonderful feast. Do you eat and run? As a host of a fine
dinner, what would your feelings be if a guest ate, drank,
then just got up and left after all the love and effort you put
into the holiday feast?
The Matthean community of today's Gospel faced the
constant challenge of who exactly was invited into the
Christian Community. God's word assures us that
everyone is invited. No one is turned away. All are
welcome. The manner in which you respond and
participate at Mass very much defines your Christian
identity.
As a pastor, I am often asked about our obligation to
attend Sunday Mass. My response is: Yes, we are
obligated. Much more than that, it is our duty and right to
attend. I go on to say, "What is going on at Mass is so
beautiful, so mysterious, how could you resist being
there?" I would rather a person be present because they
wanted to be there, needed to be there, rather than had to
be there. Those words are often lost amid the urges,
wants, and needs of our modern culture. We fail to see
what a privilege it is to celebrate the Eucharist.
Holiday celebrations are a helpful analogy when
speaking of Mass. The Roman Rite transcends time
itself! It is something we pray publicly, not privately. All
of us come to Mass, carrying our unique burdens in life.
As we sit and pray together, our cares and troubles
become one because we pray as a community of the
faithful. On our senses of faith both large and small,
God's grace rains down on us all, gently wiping the tears
from our eyes. God's welcoming embrace comforts us
amid our cares and tears. Allow your spirit to swim in the
beautiful waters of God's presence.
Being mindful of the Real Presence of Jesus in the
Sacrament we now celebrate, accept him in the
Communion we share as grateful guests at his table. Carry
that Presence with you as you leave. Remember his
Presence with every breath you take.

ST. MARK OUTREACH - ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE
The month of October is our annual food drive to replenish our food pantry. At this
time the only items we need are: peanut butter, jelly, pasta, jars of spaghetti sauce,
tuna fish, mayo, macaroni and cheese, juice, soda, powdered milk, canned fruit, cereal,
small bags of rice, pancake mix, pancake syrup, soap, toilet tissue, laundry detergent,
We thank everyone who regularly brings in food; it helps throughout the year so we
do not have to purchase as much.
"You don't know how important it is for you to be here! You don't know how much you are
doing by being here and holding these signs! You just don't know how grateful I am for all
you are doing! Thank you so much for being here! You are helping people so much more
than you know!"
Those words were spoken by a pregnant mom in 2012 as she hugged each person praying
in the hot sun along University Drive. On her behalf, and on the behalf of all the moms and
families who have been spared the life-long pain and sorrow of abortion because of the
generous witness to the sacredness of each human life by those who joined our Life Chain
last Sunday, and those who are participating in 40 Days For Life, her heartfelt words are
echoed once again. In His Name, thank you to all the families who came to the Life Chain
and gave such a powerful witness to the sacredness of God's gift of life.
Thank you too, to all who have donated packages of diapers and wipes! They are an
immense help to moms who cannot afford the expense. Our Diaper Drive will continue
through the whole month of October. Donations of any size diapers, wipes or a package of newborn pacifiers can
be placed in the playpen near the front door of the church, in the cradle near the CCD Religious Education Office
or in the Religious Education Office of St. Mark's School. Thank you for your generous kindness!
If you would like a free pregnancy test, or if you are pregnant and in need of help, please call the Hollywood
Respect Life Office at 954-963-2229. If you or someone you love has suffered an abortion, please call Project
Rachel at 954-981-2984 or check the web site Rachelsvineyard.org to experience the unlimited mercy and peace.

EVER WONDER ABOUT SINGING IN THE
CHOIR? Music is the heart of worship in many
Catholic churches, including St. Mark. Music at St.
Mark is planned to complement the Liturgy of the
Word, our pastoral homilies and our Eucharistic unity
as a parish. If you have ever wanted to or wondered
what it would be like to sing in our choirs, come give
us a try. Middle and high school students are welcome
to sing with the 9:30 Mass choir. For many of you
who love to sing at Mass, singing in the choir is only
a matter of changing where you sit. For 9:30 and
11:00 masses on Sundays, please contact Mary Lou
Corbiere by email mlc88keys8@att.net. For 12:30
Spanish choir Mass on Sundays, please contact Bill
Clifford by email william.clifford.mit@gmail.com.
