It was built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. This feast became a universal celebration in honor of the basilica called "the mother and mistress of all churches of Rome and the world" (omnium urbis et orbis ecclesiarum mater et caput) as a sign of love for and union with the See of Peter. Thank you for attending Mass with us today. We are glad you came. Fr. Joe and the Basilica parish family would like to welcome all our visitors and new members. We invite you to join in the ministries of our parish by sharing your gifts and talents. If you are not currently a registered member and wish to be, please contact the parish office. Registration forms are also available in the rack in the vestibule and online. Please check out our Web site for details on our many activities and volunteer opportunities. Thanks to Pat and Patti Burns for putting this update together. Good Sunday to All, Fr. Joe Callipare Society of St. Vincent DePaul St. Michael Conference began in 1933. It is our understanding that the original conference was active for many years in the parish until sometime in the 60’s-70’s before becoming inactive. Seeing the growing need to serve the poor in the downtown area the St. Michael Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was re-aggregated in 2010. SVDP St. Michael Vincentian mission is to meet those in need person-to-person and to serve God and the poor while growing spiritually by serving others. St. Michael Conference operates and staffs and financially contributes to the Desoto Street Pantry. Our dedicated Vincentian members fill grocery bags, and meet with the families twice a week. Since reopening this pantry in January of 2014 under our conference there have been close to 2000 served. This Pantry has been at the Desoto location, which is the SVDP Council owned property for over 10 years serving the needy in the area. Our Pantry is sustained by food donations from the barrel in the rear of church, and the Annual Catholic High food drive that happens every November and with monthly monetary contributions from Sacred Heart Cathedral conference. In addition to this ministry, our Conference financially supports the Alfred-Washburn Center (AWC) with a monthly contribution. The Center is a laundry and shower and mail distribution service to over 140 individuals a day six days a week. Food, clothing, and many other services are provided at this location. The parish conference has also helped many families with rent, and emergency utility assistance for the many who just cannot make it from paycheck to paycheck. SVDP has bought eyeglasses and dentures and provided transportation in the form of bus passes and car repairs. There is no work of Charity foreign to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Our Conference also expends part of what is donated by the parish to finance a transition jobs program at the SVDP Desoto warehouse and Thrift Store operation. This new program has seen success in being able to put some of our homeless neighbors back into the workforce, where we have witnessed self - esteem and confidence come back into their life. This valuable program can only be sustained with your support. Each September St. Michael Conference has participated in the National Friends of the Poor Walk, which is our only annual fund raiser. This walk is scheduled around the feast day of St. Vincent. We have also hosted 2 Rummage Sales in 4 years to increase funding for the Conference. The Conference will be providing the annual report to the Parish soon. This report will give more detail into numbers and dollars than could be provided here. St. Vincent dePaul St. Michael Conference meets on the first and third Sundays of the month between Masses in the Community Center. Our members meet in friendship and prayer. New members are welcome and encouraged to participate in SVDP mission to serve the poor and to grow spiritually.
